Hello Grant,
I have just built a HD airframe with the XL undercarriage, alas in the
taildragger configuration. No big deal, I made the two innermost noseribs on
each side from .040. put a few stiffeners in to build up a box on each side,
and bolted and riveted the steel attachment brackets onto those boxes. The
spring, which is coldbent from 6061 T6 according to the manufacturing specs
for the 701 spring gear by Chris H., runs recessed in a channel in front of
the main spar. The spring cost me about 100 $US to make, and welding up the
axle stubs was easy. Much easier than the bungee UC, and my last two planes
have had the spring type of gear.
Sadly I won't be seeing this one through to first flight, as 9 to 5 is
waiting for me after three years of exclusive aircraft building, during
which I have built four, and flown three Zodiacs.
The next one, built after work and on the weekends, will probably take five
years, instead of the five month I am used to.
Ah well, can't have the cake and eat it.

14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Wednesday, July 21, 2004 in Erie, CO
Aircraft: Davis-Zenair STOL CH 801, registration: N10627
Injuries: 1 Uninjured.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain
errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final
report has been completed.
On July 21 2004, at approximately 1130 mountain daylight time, a
Davis-Zenair, STOL CH 801, N10627, was substantially damaged during a
forced landing to a field near Erie, Colorado. The airline transport
certificated pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions
prevailed at the time of the accident. The local test flight was being
conducted under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 without a flight
plan. The flight originated at Tri-County Airport (48V), Erie, Colorado,
at approximately 1010.
According to the pilot, the airplane had a total of 1.3 hours of flight
time. The pilot said he was conducting an initial test flight and had
completed ten take off and landings on runway 33. The pilot stated that,
while on downwind following the eleventh take off, the engine power
dropped to less then half. Unable to maintain pattern altitude, the
pilot attempted to land on runway 09. The pilot was forced to land the
airplane in a field approximately 200 feet short of the runway. The
impact with the terrain displaced the left wing aft, collapsed the nose
landing gear assembly, and buckled the firewall.

neck from Princess Auto in Kitchener, Ontario. I believe that essentially
all the Princess Auto stores stock the same stuff. They were not
expensive, and were in stock.

A few folks have added temporary ferry tanks to the wing lockers of
HD(s) models complete with a Facet pump to transfer fuel either to an
existing tank or direct to the engine with no problem.
As long as you got the space and don't exceed the aft CG limit during
your fuel burn there is no reason not to add the fuel capacity.
Personally I like to keep fuel out of the cockpit but you could even add
a temp fuel bladder in the PX seat like all the round the World flyers
do.

I have about 100 hours on my 801 and keep having flat tires. Since I fly into off
airport places I like to run less than 6 PSI in my tires to soften the landings.
Is anyone else having tube side wall blow outs on their 801?
I'm thinking of converting my wheels and brakes to Cleveland double pucks. Has
anyone had any experience with the conversion?
Does anyone have experience with installing larger tires on their 801?

Check with ZAC -- they sell an extended wing tank kit (two additional 12
gallon tanks, mounted in the leading edge of each wing just outboaud of
the main tanks). Total 48 gallons.

I seem to remember seeing wing locker insert tanks but I can't find them on
ZAC's web site now. I did find these auxiliary tanks though:

We run ours on a 601HDS at around 30 psi. We had a puncture in the inner
tuibe a while ago and landed with a complete flat on one side in almost nil
wind conditions. Other than needing almost full rudder deflection to roll to
a halt in a straight line, there was no problem. The tyre was OK as well.

Two things I consider important in the amount of gasoline on board:
engine's g per h at cruise and another is pilot's range... flights of
more than 3 hours without streching and bathroom is very demanding.
Climate watching is also very important in cross country flights.
The only advantange of long range tanks are that if there is no autogas
available (in caser of Rotax 912S) , you can fly to the next airfield.

I am wondering about the type of tire you may be using and the PLY rating
I have not head of any other 801 having tire troubles, I would fax Chris
about increasing the size of the tires and ask his recomendation, usually a
good idea to ask the original designer when making a change to the basic
design.. Keeps one from making simple errors.. Good luck hope you find a
solution.

I'm thinking of converting my wheels and brakes to Cleveland double pucks
Has anyone had any experience with the conversion?
Does anyone have experience with installing larger tires on their 801?

I think 6 PSI sounds pretty low. And when you said the blow outs happen on
the sidewall, it reminded me of my bicycling days. Most of my blowouts (on a
bicycle) came from underinflation. Don't know if there's any correlation or
not. But consider this: When you hit a bump (e.g. a railroad crossing...or a
curb) the tube gets pinched between the rim and the "bump." The leak will be
on the sidewall, sometimes two leaks...one on each side of the tube. If the
tire is inflated properly (I realize that bicycle tires are frequently inflated
to 100 PSI) it won't "flatten out" to the extent that the tube can become
pinched when you hit a bump.
If you are landing on asphalt or cement, even a semi-hard landing could
possibly collapse the tire to the point where the tube will be pinched enough to
puncture it. We're only talking a fraction of a second....the moment of impact.
I would try a little more air pressure in the tire. Just my thoughts on
the subject.
