Certainly a multi-talented builder! Its located on the Builder's Photos page (Larry Martin) www.CH701.com Jon ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:48:03 PM PST US From: "Jeff Small" Subject: Zenith-List: Dave Dormer address Seal-Send-Time: Sun, 8 Aug 2004 20:48:06 -0400 --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff Small" Would Dave Dormer please contact zodiacjeff@msn.com do not archive ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 06:30:33 PM PST US From: Rick Subject: Zenith-List: 701 Elevator Henge 7-H-3 --> Zenith-List message posted by: Rick I feel like an idiot but here goes: Page 5 of 14 advises to cut and drill the Elevator Horn Cables Holes Positioning Template. The rv list has some info. No it is not safe to anodize all parts. Anodizing forms a thin surface layer that is harder than the base metal. This sets up a part for stress cracking. It's ok to anodize some things like the instrument panel - not a lot of flexing there. But anodizing something like a wing skin is a bad idea. I don't know enough about the structural engineering aspects to select which parts could be anodized. (I'm a chemical process type.) Also there is hard anodizing process that puts on a thicker harder layer this would aggravate the situation even more. Joe E. I love the Zenith line but a few things I would like to see and wondering if the Sport Pilot rule will help produce new models? I would like to scratch build a high wing all aluminum ,folding wing, Tri-gear at least 100 to 120 mph cruise, not a stol aircraft, with some high useful loads up to the 1320 lbs limit. I cannot find such an aircraft that is produced and also have the option of a plans build. The 701 is close and I can buy parts if need be but I would like to have the cruise of the 601. I may be asking too much ,but I keep hearing the rumor of new planes so I keep hoping. Any one know of new planes coming ? Thanks Joe Wooten ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 08:14:07 PM PST US From: "Richard T Perry" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Sport-Pilot Eligible Aircraft --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Richard T Perry" (Wow - two postings in one week - this is a record for me!) Winston/Stan, I think there's a loophole here that _could_ make this work. You see, there's a real difference between the Ercoupe (standard certificated aircraft) and a Zodiac (experimental). In the first case, the Ercoupe can be traced back to the original type certificate, which means that the below text applies. However, with the Zodiac, IF YOU BUILD IT AS AN EXPERIMENTAL, it's not Zenith who is "manufacturing" the aircraft, it's you. A lot of experimental aircraft are listed in the database as a (using me as an example) "Perry-Zenith" or "Zenith-Perry" or something similar. The point is that you as the builder determine the characteristics of the aircraft, and the FAA realizes that. Does this mean that I can take my Lancair SuperFastGlassRocket and tell the FAA that it's got a stall speed and cruise speed to meet LSA criteria? Nope. They're not stupid (and I'll bet you an aircraft wash that they're going to be looking hard to find guys trying to do just that - like "fat" ultralights). However, if I can show that (through flight testing or math) that I'm working from a design that flies at X and I'm adding this device that decreases stall speed to Y, proven by... That should work as an adequate basis for the FAA's airworthiness certificate. So....what this means is that if I go out and build a 601 and modify it in the process to lower the stall speed to meet LSA criteria...I would think that I would be FAA OK, as I'm the manufacturer. However, talk to the source - call the FSDO, a designee or a Tech Advisor (before you start!) I might also add that Zenith might or might not support the mod, but that's a different issue. Now, if I buy a light sport ready built aircraft from Zenith - it's (by definition) going to meet the same restrictions (otherwise they can't sell it as one!). However, if I buy a used experimental 601 on the open market planning to fly it as a LSA...it might get tricky. I don't think you could make that work, unless you were able to disassemble 51% of the aircraft and reassemble with modifications (i.e. apply for a new different airworthiness certificate.) It was hoped to be finished by now, but like all other designs from Chris it tends to take a long time to get to the table. Hopefully we will have good news for Sun & Fun. I also know that there is a rumor that Chris has resumed designing a new Gemini 630. Once again I think we will have to wait till Sun & Fun 05 to see something new. For those who don't know the rumor, the CH152 from 50ft away looks the same as a Cessna 152. But with the famous Heintz design for the simplistic construction. It is essentially everything Joe wants rolled into one plane. I'm told that RVs actually do what they claim. However, I have built and licensed four aircraft and none have performed as advertised and one was a 601HD. You can fool some people by not hooking up a static system to the ASI as Zenith does but it doesn't change the facts.
