I have a real world question. If you are flying your HDS at gross ( you decide
what that is). What speeds do you fly? For a stablized approach, what targets
do you try to hit and what do you usually have indicated at the fence? thanks

Hi Phill,
I like to trim for 80 mph and 65 to 70 over the fence. This gives me a
nice and stabilized approach, even with some crosswinds.
You can go slower, but than the nose is way up. I want to see where I go
- and runway length is not the big of an issue anymore with in-flight
adjustable prop - just set take thing in reverse (takes two seconds) and
push a throttle a little bit forward (reverse trust).

Rick, Cut to the shape shown,, I used hardware store alum leftovers. The
material used is not important,,, the geometry is. Lay it out to position the
holes where they are to be per the print. The template only is used once for
location of the horn holes.

Subject: | Question about CH 601 XL and range |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Brent Friedman" <bfriedman@exstream.com>
I have been researching kit planes for a while, and recently came across the Zodiac
line. The CH 601 XL seems to be well suited for what I would like to do,
but I wanted to ask a few questions on the list.
I would like to build a plane with a range of about 1000nm. I have looked into
the Long-EZ and variants, but after a couple of flights, I decided that the Rutan
variants just aren't very comfortable for extended periods.
So, my questions:
1. Is the Gemini twin a 'dead' concept? The dates on the Zenair website shows
a date of 2001 for expected pricing info.
2. I found conflicting information about the extended tanks available with the
kit. I was planning on a quick build kit, if that makes a difference. Can the
extended tanks be used with the old firewall mounted tank?
3. Lastly, what kind of real-world endurance are people having with the 601 series?
Thanks,
Brent Friedman

The standard fuel tank configuration for the 601 XL is a 12 gallon tank in
the leading edge of each wing. The long range option is for a second 12
gallon tank in leading edge of each wing outboard of the standard tank. The
fuel line for the second tank passes through a tube in the the inboard tank.
The two tanks are otherwise identical.
A header tank is not normally installed in the XL, although it could be
done. You could order one of the header tanks normally used in the HD (8 or
16 gallon) and install it in the XL. Another possibility is to add a wing
locker and install a removable fuel tank there.

Personally I would just go for the extra outboard tanks....I.e use the
space that you can't use for anything else!
As to fuel in the cockpit for me that is a big no-no, either way just
about everyone I talk to gets fuel smells in the cockpit which makes my
Wife sick so that was a done deal for me to just use LE tanks in the
HDS.

This brings up an interesting(?) point for me:
The website for Zenith Aircraft had a bit on the extended tanks (which seems
to have disappeared). They had claimed "1,200 statute mile range" for the
aircraft. My question is regarding a "relief tube" installation. I have
never seen anything published on how to make, install or use a relief tube.
Is there anything "out there" that can give me information on how to make
(and use, properly) a relief tube? I have used Ziploc bags for extended
flights in the past, but would appreciate any information on the
construction and use of relief tubes.

The only problem I see (apart from grossing out my Wife) is that the
angle of the seats is such that it would be pretty difficult to use as
you would have to lift yourself up quite high in the seat.
You would need to have the airplane trimmed in both pitch and roll axis
so make sure you install the ailron trimkit (you can even retrofit the
simple RV spring loaded system)..and/or install one of those sweet
little autopilots from Digitarack.

Relief tubes are simple
3/8 poly tubing long enough to reach from front of pilot seat to
exterior of aircraft in any location you prefer. Shorter is better.
Suggest an oval hole to fit somewhere under the pilot seat that suits
antenna locations etc. Don't want to hose them every time. Let the
tubing curve aft and cut off to a square end. In flight a slight vacuum
will form in the tube. Upper end... a simple small kitchen funnel,
flexible plastic. Epoxy the funnel in place and epoxy the tubing in
place where it exits the fuselage rather than a grommet.

In cave diving, I use a Catheter Condom attached to a

Aircraft Spruce sells a venturi outlet for the relief tube. I think you
really want to have the exit side in low pressure! I'm not sure a dangling
tube is going to guarantee low pressure at the exit point (remember that
there is usually lower pressure in the cockpit) and you don't want the flow
reversing on you!
An altogether simpler solution is to purchase a plastic bottle designed for
the task from a medical supply.

Our ASI over-reads by 10-15 kts as we have no external static source, but we
cruise at an indicated 90-100 kts, descend and approach at 90 kts and come
over the fence at 80 kts. It stalls power off at 60 kts indicated. As soon
as the main wheels touch the ground the nose drops within less than a
second.

WE have had a lengthy discussion on this topic in the past, brought up
diving runs at the Amish whilst using said tube, and many more
interesting situations with the wife also trying the funnel version. But
what it ALL comes down to is, HAVE YOU EVER SAT ON A 601. If you have
and can still consider any way of relieving yourself during flight then
you're a far far better man then I am !!!!! Not to mention that you
could have an evening career in video's.

construction and use of relief tubes.

That was my thought...You are way to 'er...ergonomically comfortable
while flying (read crammed, bent in half in the seat) to lift yourself
to a relieving position...:)
Ain't gonna happen...easily...:)

My question is regarding a "relief tube" installation. I have never seen
anything published on how to make, install or use a relief tube. Is
there anything "out there" that can give me information on how to make
(and use, properly) a relief tube? I have used Ziploc bags for extended
flights in the past, but would appreciate any information on the

Hello. I'm installing the throttle linkage and friction block shown on drawing
6E5. The sketch on that page seems to indicate that the friction block is bolted
through the top stiffener, 6F8-2, but I don't see anything in the instructions
to that effect. Also, the text in the installation sheet ZAC sent me says
to "Determine the height by the position of the Friction Clamp and the clearance
of the Bellcrank arms to clear the Top Skin." That seems to contradict
bolting the clamp to the top stiffener.
What have you guys done there? I'm using the Stratus engine.

DO NOT ARCHIVE
Maybe someone should fund a "P-Prize" for the design of a really functional Relief
Tube.
This design competition could get interesting as environmental standards are met,
non-discrimination & fail-safe features are built in, automatic Weight & Balance
Compensation circuits would power servos to maintain level flight, a Norden-type
VFR aiming device would prevent inadvertent shopping mall mishaps, and
best of all, the device would be "open architecture" so that all could build
one from plans. There might develop a "P-Prize List" on the internet......share
your thoughts with others about the proper way to stay dry.
Some firm might even sell kits for your specific aircraft.

Bill,
The angle shown is riveted with two A5s to the firewall and the blocks of
nylon only have bolts thru them
to allow tightening a bit to get some adjustable drag on the tube and
provide a middle stiffener.
No bolts thru the stiffener.
Didn't like the dual throttle cable linkage either so I used a flex joint
between the carbs. Seen on the engine
page of my site if you're interested. Then only one carb has to be operated
by a solid piece of music wire
within the sleeve. Works great!

List,
Anybody have a neat trick for accurately measuring the angle the
rudder swings? I've tried a few geometry exercises, but I can't get
reliable results.
Thanks,

I never could get the thing to work smoothly and it would slowly slip on me
causing the RPMs to increase. I ended up throwing the entire assembly in
the trash and ordered a ratcheting throttle cable from AS&S.

I just made mine last weekend and I took that drawing to
mean that the tension bolts do not go through the top
stiffener. They are up against that stiffener but not
through it. It would be hard to adjust the tension on
the blocks if they went through 6-f-8-2.

I bolted together two aluminum pieces at one end and used
this to copy the angle. Then I turned it horizontal and
used the warp drive propeller angle finder on it.

I collapsed my nose gear recently on an ugly wheelbarrowing / porpoising
landing. More details soon when I have some time - hopefully it will
help someone else from doing the same. Both occupants are injury free,
but I have some repair work to do. Does anyone know where I can get AVEX
rivets in Canada to save on the time and customs expense of shipping
from the US?

Frank, you can get them from Textron in Rexdale (not far from Pearson
Intl). Prices are reasonable. I just bought a box of 2000 for $99 in
change.
