Tony B also described this method in one of his articles about building
the RV-3 or 4 spar.
It works, I did some practice sets with it awhile back. I could only do
one edge of the spar at a time. And at the time thought it MIGHT be
better (maybe not) to set the opposite edge next, instead of doing one
long edge then doing the other long spar cap edge. (anyone have thoughts
on this) Why I like Mark T. homemade rivet setter.
I will add, since a wise and experienced builder added/cautioned me. If
using this method, make sure that all surfaces that come in contact with
the rivet be POLISHED to a mirror surface. My arbor press had small
ridges that when striking the rivet, left marks in the shop end of the
rivet. i.e STRESS RISERS.... It took an hour or so to grind and polish
the ridges out of my arbor press.
Not a good thing to have stress risers in your spar rivets.
Same goes when setting them with a hammer and bolt or any other method for
that matter. The surfaces need to have that mirror finish like store
bought rivet sets and bucking bars.
BTW, Sonnex guys set their spars with a 5/8 inch bolt and hammer

It is painful and emotional for me to make this post. Personal and family
considerations make proceeding with my dream aircraft ill advised at this
time.
If any on this list wish a Zenith CH 601 XL Quick Build from Czech
Aircraft Works I have one that is scheduled for September 6th Shipment and
should arrive in the USA the week of September 20th.
The unit is Firewall Back so engine of your choice may be installed. No
instruments are mounted however single axis servo for Tru Track Pictorial
Pilot is installed and head supplied. The unit will accommodate left
seat pilots approximately 511 and right seat 62 and has duel brakes. 36
US Gallons of Fuel are available in 3 leading edge wing tanks giving true
your choice.
As you will find out, if you check, the 7 day build program is not really 7
days as there is a wait for delivery date and in my case it was about 5
months but now due to their high provisional order volume on Mermaid
Amphibian in development I would expect, but have not confirmed, wait to be
much longer.
This is not a distress sale as I can always proceed to complete and fly but
I am willing to ASSIGN my unit to you at no profit to me. The exact cost
cannot be computed as delivery costs and some other minor items are not
known at this time. You should estimate a cost of about $37,500. plus
engine, firewall forward, instruments and avionics.
If you have a serious interest, contact me at my e-mail address, OFF LIST,
with name, address and your phone number and I will answer questions and
supply requested information.

I now know for sure that the Corvair engine will pull my Zodiac into the
sky.
I took off at about 1:00 pm and only did one circuit around the airpark. I
don't have much in the way of performance number as the air was really
bumpy and my senses were going crazy looking for anything out of the
ordinary. Those who have made their first flight will probably know what
I'm talking about. I did notice that I was climbing at around 500 fpm @ 80
mph. Downwind I hit 105 mph all gauges were in the green except for the oil
temp which was getting very close to red line. I did several high speed
taxis before flying and wonder if that contributed to the high oil temp.
CHT's were somewhere around 300-325 degrees even after all the taxi
testing. I never did get a for sure tach reading. I just know it was less
than 3200rpm and probably around 2800. The tick marks on my tach are rather
close together and I wasn't going to try to count them.
The final weight with paint (except cowl paint) and Corvair installed was
753 lbs. The balance came out great. I would have a hard time getting the
balance out either way. Aft was nearly impossible and forward would have to
be flown by a pilot weighing less than 150 lbs with full fuel and no bags.
I'm not in danger of that

Alright Randy!!
I'm in San Antonio (well actually Schertz) as well. I can't wait to hear
how the Corvair increases your performance over the VW..
I've seen very little feedback from WW's installation. I assume he's busy
filling orders and paying the bills, but I wonder if perhaps he's tweaking
to get better numbers before publishing as it's been along time between
updates.
In which airpark are you based??

Just saw this and thought it would be of interest to the group. You design, online,
and then submit your order and the part is machined and mailed directly to
your home.

Bruce, don't recognize the buttercup but have you ever spent 5 min
inside the cockpit of a Sonex? Then add a passenger! The Zodiac becomes
a very quick choice. As for style !!! Well it is a personal thing !!

Thanks Mark,
Yes, I've sat in a Sonex, and yes it was a tight fit for myself (5'10" -
190) and my father (6'3" - 210), in fact it was quite tight, he would have
to have his left arm up on the seat the whole time to make that work.
I've sat in Leo Gates 601HDS, although it was by myself, and, it was
definitely more comfortable. I just can't get over the speed difference
though. The Sonex is very very fast for the money/size/engine vs the REAL
numbers that I've seen reported here for the Zodiac, which is why I've very
interested in WW's results. Of course, on a medium cross country, 25+mph
faster in a less comfortable plane will probably actually take more rest
breaks etc...
The Buttercup is a Steve Whitman design (http://www.luceair.com/) a rag and
tube STOL with a 125mph cruise, 300ft TO distance and 200ft landing. It's
very likely I would not go that way, as I believe there is only one flying
now (other than the original which is in an EAA museum I believe) and since
I've not yet even started flight training, I probably should not be an
"early adopter" for an experimental. I'd also have to learn to weld.. What
attracts me to the idea of it though, is I would likely be able to base it
out of a 1500ft grass strip at an ultralight airport (soon to be a "Sport
Pilot center ?) which is less than 4 miles from my house, vs. an airpark
about a 35min drive from my house (where Leo Gates lives). I would also
like to be able to perhaps carry a more cargo like a mountain bike when
flying solo.... Steve Whitman used the original Buttercup to carry parts
around the country for his racing aircraft.
So maybe that will be the 2nd one eh? ;-)

Yup...its the same thing.
The alternator will boost your volts up to 14+ even though it's a '12V'

Congratulations, Randy, on your first flight in the "ZodieCo" (sounds like something
from da bayou cawntry, no?) I have a feeling that as more Corvairs get
mated to Zeniths, the wave will be on. Glad I got mine some time ago. Many of
us will be interested in what prop, carb, modifications, etc. you are using.

The rating on your instrument of 14VDC is for a nominal 12 VDC system. Your
so called 12 volt battery is actually about 12.6 at rest and the charging
system is usually set for about 14 volts plus or minus about 1/2 volt. These
are not the actual figures but good guide numbers. Consult a battery
manufacturer for the precise values.

Subject: | Hole in splice plate? |

Has Chris approved putting a hole in the center of the 601 wing splice plates (6V4-7
and 6V4-8)? If so, what max diameter? I'd like to do so for wire routing.
Any help out there?
George
