To the gang:
I was surprised how fast Pat's 601XL 100% firewall aft kit was
purchased. I'm sure you all know that we can deliver these
professionally built quick-built kits (or ready-to-fly) to any of you
with delivery time of only two months or so right now. We also would
like to offer to buy back any kits (rudder kits or tail group kits) as
partial payment for our fastbuilts. And don't forget, this same program
is available for the CH701.

Still trucking along then George?...:)
I don't know about the splice plate, It "should" be OK if one puts the
hole in the middle of the plate and deburs it thoroughly. He did approve
a hole in the spar to route the brake lines for me.
You should really check directly with ZAC though.
Incidently have you checked the hole edge distances on the
plates?...There were a bunch that had to be replaced with steel...You
could defintaly make a hole in them!...:)
Cheers
Frank

Has Chris approved putting a hole in the center of the 601 wing splice
plates (6V4-7 and 6V4-8)? If so, what max diameter? I'd like to do so
for wire routing. Any help out there?

Fellow 601XL Builders:
I need your help today. I plan to pick up some grade 8 bolts from Lowes this
afternoon to fabricate part 6-B-11-4 (The main gear attachments), but the
drawing and current update have me confused.
To save you the trouble of pulling out your drawings, see this link:

The updates of 4/04 on the Zenith website mention "Delete 1" of threads on
bolts..."
After doing the math and adding the thicknesses of the rubber gaskets, alum.
angle, 1/" nut, etc., it seems like 1" of threads below the bottom of the
fuselage will work. If you have this part installed or just in a place
where you can find it, can you tell me how far the bolts (and threads) hang
below the bottom of the fuselage? A close-up photo of the part with a ruler
would provide the best help.
Thanks in advance,

FWIW . . . I've seen an ad by one of the big supply houses that they make
the Buttercup kit among other. The flight characteristics are impressive,
but I'm not sure it would meet sport pilot specs. Robert Schoenberger

Now that I'm committed to a taildragger 601XL, I'm curious to know what others
are using---ACS shows two homebuilder special tailwheels, with 4" or 6" wheels.
Anybody got any experience with either size? I don't expect the weight differential
(2 pounds) to be significant, since the powerplant will be Corvair.

Yup, me thinks so...
The slight change in the SP gross weight with corresponding slight change in
"clean" stall speed put it right there. I think ( with my limited
knowledge) it would be a good candidate for a Corvair as well.
I've seen the Buttercup "kit" mentioned on aircraft spruce's site but no
pricing etc, and I believe it is a kit of raw materials.
Getting back to Zenith discussion.. no one' heard from WW on what's
happening with his 601XL & cruise speeds etc???

even find anything on the internet photo guide.
Looking for a procedure, bolts to use Etc.

To add to Rons question, are there any information on the
installation of the 701 folding wings. I have the option
but no instructions...

One thing to keep in mind about the performance of the Buttercup is that
Wittman used to turn the engine to 3000 rpms to achieve the top speed. You
may not wish to do the same.

Subject: | Re: VOR/Glideslope antenna location |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Bryan Martin <bryanmmartin@comcast.net>
A couple of people have asked me about my home made VOR antenna so I decided
to post the details to the list in case anybody else wants to know.
I made the antenna from two automotive FM whip antennas and a PVC pipe cap.
The pipe cap is just a bit smaller in diameter than the width of the rudder,
either a 3/4=B2 or 1=B2 cap as I recall. I drilled two holes in the side of the
cap about 120 degrees apart and mounted just the whip portion of an antenna
in each hole. The whips were threaded at the bottom (8-32 as I recall) and
just screwed into the original base. I attached the coax cable to the whips
inside the pipe cap with ring terminals, center conductor to one whip and
shield to the other. I cut the whips down to about 24=B2 to get them into the
VOR frequency band. Then I filled the pipe cap with epoxy and drilled two
holes through from the end for mounting screws. The assembly attaches to the
top of the rudder by means of a couple of nutserts. The coax passes down
through the rudder though a hole centered under the antenna assembly. You
also need to use a balun with this type of antenna to match the balanced
antenna load with the unbalanced coax antenna cable. There are a few types
of baluns that can be used and some types will require a different
connection between the cable and antenna. I used a bazooka balun which is
just a length of shielding wrapped around the outer insulation of the coax
leading back from the antenna and bonded to the inner shielding about 24=B2
from the antenna.
I got the idea for this antenna from an article in KitPlanes by Jim Weir. I
picked up some more information about baluns and such from several articles
on the internet. I haven=B9t tested this antenna in the air yet so I don=B9t
know how well it works. The whole thing only cost me about $15 so even if it
doesn=B9t work I=B9m not out much. I have been able to pick the weather
broadcast from a VOR located about 12 miles away while on the ground at the
airport. The signal is very weak and broken which is about what you=B9d expect
in that case but at least I know the antenna is picking up something.

I bought the 6" (pn/ L-694) from ACS and wish I hadn't. Turns out that the wheel
would break loose from the detente position too easily and at low speeds on
landing (and with the 701 almost all are slow) when the rudder was losing efectiveness,
and I didn't have any steering, I made several off runway excursions
but luckily (did I also mention slow?) there were no serious incidents, just had
to look around and hope there were no witnesses. Although one runway light got
a little to close for comfort. Finally figured out what was going on and I
now have the Matco tailwheel assembly on my plane. Have not had a problem since
and have very positive steering at all speeds. Haven't pulled the other assembly
apart to look yet but suspect it may have a spring and ball into a notch type
of detente. Possibly a heavier spring if that is the case, but will stick with
the Matco. I do have a homebuilders tailwheel assembly for sale (minus the
solid rubber tire, the Matco pneumatic tire was too large for my application, and
that tire is for sale also, but too large for the homebuilders tailwheel setup),
so if anyone is interested contact me off line and I'm sure we can work
a deal.

Anybody got any experience with either size? I don't expect the weight differential
(2 pounds) to be significant, since the powerplant will be Corvair.

I have been building my 701 for about 20 months now and following all
the discussions including "folding wings"
I considered several things and decided not to use the folding wing
arrangement.
1. With the wings folded, it makes a very tall package subject to a lot
of windage problems and height limitations.
2. It is a two or three man operation to fold the wings.
3. Consider the alternative, removal of the wings. Depending on your
storage or trailer limitations a padded cradle on either side of the
fuselage can hold the wings more securely than the folded
arrangement... The wings come off after removal of only 4 bolts each
side the same as with folding.. The struts (if in the way) are removed
by 4 additional bolts. I have installed quick connects for fuel and
all wire connections at the wing root at the top of the cabin behind an
aluminum trip plate..
It may not be the best way, but it's my way.

Subject: | Trade or sale? 701 kit/plane |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Eric Parlow" <ericparlow@hotmail.com>
I have an RV-8 empennage & wing kit completed plus a lot of extras.
But......
I'm moving to a new house with a 700 ft grass runway!
I'll be going to flight / A&P school 35 miles away on an airport.
I'm thinking a 701 would be just the thing to commute!
Any interest in a trade or sale?

The empanage is not the same as the RV 7 is it?....I just ordered the
RV7A quickbuild...Sure I could drop the empanage from the order if it's
the same...Would be an even quicker build kit then...:).

David,
There's a very positive article about the emachineshop site in the August 3,
2004 issue of PC Magazine.
It looks to me like the free and easy CAD program would be worth a visit to
the site at the very least.
