If you can remove the skin, you can remove the dent with a kitchen spoon. Put the skin with the outside surface down on a piece of smooth hardwood or similar. A table is good if it has a very hard and smooth top. Use some WD40 or oil on the surface to allow the spoon to slip. Rub the spoon over the dented surface, working from the edges to the centre. When you finally get to the actual crease you will have to work down its length as well as across. I have to emphasize that the work surface must be hard. If you use corrugated cardboard for example, the cardboard will give way and you will create a smooth lump in the skin. Even softwood will give way. MDF or hardwood is what I use. I get to do this a lot on .016 when smiles get formed from careless handling. If you use a hammer and a dolly, there is a good chance that you will stretch the skin. The hammer will not always strike flat on the dolly unless you have made one with the exact curvature of the skin. The hammer has to have a slightly tighter radius than the skin. It would be a lot easier just to unrivet the skin if necessary and spoon the crease out. In the builders Resources section. I have all three formats there downloadable in Zip format. Am I the only one having trouble getting the wing ribs to print full size? I know I am doing something wrong but cant figure out what. ===== A Fellow Aviator and 601XL Builder-Corvair Powered {just started} Nick Pace Harpers Ferry WV Getting Ready For My Checkride _______________________________ ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 10:31:50 AM PST US Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Painting final coat over Zinc-Chromate From: Ray Montagne --> Zenith-List message posted by: Ray Montagne On 8/20/04 7:01 AM, "Bima, Martin" wrote: > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bima, Martin" > > Can't say if you can over-paint ZCr but can say that Thinner will take the ZCr off easily. I have a Lawrence airmap 100 that formerly mounted to the yoke on a Cessna 150 and liked it there, so it was modified to fit on the 601HDS control stick. The fit is good and adjustably swings to the pilot or passenger for direct viewing and programming. Only needed to make one piece that put the mount in front of the stick and the GPS over the Y. Clearance is good and it's not obstructive at all. Pictures at www.macsmachine.com at the bottom of the completion page. The cork rings the size of the panel doubler give clearance for the nutplates and screws from hitting the tank and keep the center terminal from reaching the panel. There is a piece of teflon on the inside center of the panel also. The panels were approved by Chris Heintz in May 2003 in a hand written letter mailed to me. Basically he states a .025" doubler in skin with panel overlapping the skin and it. Goodings" Atttempted answer to Martin Bima's question: I have just returned from the shop where my 601 has been professionally painted, finished yesterday. By any standard, it is superb (not just my opinion)!!! I saw it after the prep work before the painting was actually begun. ALL the aluminum had been rubbed hard with Scotch Bright (spelling?). It was bright and gleaming and perfectly clean with a scratched surface (to anchor the undercoat). This had all been done by hand by a couple of people in a couple of days. I gather this prep work is essential to a good paint job. So, yes - you must remove any "overspray" trace of zinc chromate. I have the folding wing drawings but they are of very poor quality--hand drawn and very difficult to read. I'll be happy to try and scan a copy and send it to you as an attachment if you would like. I think ZAC would be ashamed to put out such a poor product. The option is not cheap in price. So they must be included in as a standard option.
