I'm installing the radiator on my 601HD with the Stratus Subaru engine. The radiator
has a large plug in the back, with two tabs - obviously the water temperature
sensor. The question is - how have folks installed the rear radiator cover?
That is, have you cut out a large hole (about 1" diameter) for the wires
to go through and to clear the plug, or have you drilled a smaller hole in the
cover and run the wires through that hole, or ??? It seems like the cover
should be as close to the radiator as possible to cut down on air leakage, but
then it interferes with the tabs.

Bill,
I used a sensor in the block for my water temp (which is what I
believe Stratus intended). So I only used that item as a plug, and
blocked off the entire rear-area. Make sure you have a good seal to
prevent any air from escaping in any way besides going through the
radiator.

Bill,

Bill,
If its the Rabbit radiator, the plug is actually a fan-thermo-switch that
turns on at 180-degrees.
It won't give you a temperature reading, only on or off. I bought a
replacement for mine a month ago
at the prospect of using a fan one day, but later, found the fan wasn't
needed.
For access, I cut a 1-1/2" hole that clears the plug for a large socket and
then made
a cover with two holes and used rivnuts in the back cover to hold the small
plate.
There are earlier pictures of my radiator when the plug was reworked to hold
a schrader valve
to bleed bubbles from the high end. That didn't work nearly as well as
making the radiator
attachable only after it is filled with coolant.

Thanks to all the replied, on- and off-list.
Given that I have to trash the centre spar, I am considering the switch to the
XL model.
I am trying to get as much information as possible, so I can make a informed decision.
This is were my project stands today:
Tail feathers completed.
I haven't built the wing tanks, and the outer wing spars weren't rivetted yet.
all ribs ready
Fuse work hasn't started, although I have a number of parts made.
The choice - So far, I see as advantages:
simpler construction centre spar
simpler construction main landing gear
no wear problems on main landing gear (less maintenance than the HD)
nicer looking (opinions will vary, of course)
improved attitude on landing (?) due to flaps
performance (?) The figures I found don't show much of a difference...
Disadvantages:
I'll need to make new forming blocks (some sixteen or eighteen)
additional work: flap building
requires a 12' table (I'm thinking of adding a 4' temporary
extension to my 8' table; workshop is 12'6" long...)
of course, a whole bunch of parts go to the recycling bin
Comments/suggestions/opinions welcome

Dear List,
Any body know what size their 701 elevator trim tab is?
Mine is 50mm X 850mm.
It's fine most of the time, but I run out of NOSE UP trim at low speeds, especially
with the flaps out on approach and low power settings.
It's not too difficult to hold the pressure and it may be a safety factor to have
it that way, but I'm wondering if I should fit a larger tab.

Thank you very much for your offer.
I have so far no information or drawings whatsoever, but
my quick build fuselage (everything else is slow build)
come with this option that comprises an extra transversal
tube over the cockpit with an inner extendable coaxial
tube at each end and two simple angled wing fittings,
delivered as separate items.
CZAW did not include any documentation or drawings for this
option. I have not been able to figure out how to install it
nor figure out how it works, but there it sits staring at me.
I know it is an unpopular option (even ZAC does not really
promote it) as the wings are easy to detach and quick connects
can be arranged for the fuel and electrical wires, but before
throwing it away and burning the CZAW delivered wooden trestle,
which I suppose is used to hold the wings close to the tail,
it would be nice to evaluate the usefulness of this option.
You see, I will have to tow my amphibious 701 past some
obstacles every time it will be stored, so this option
could perhaps after all come in handy.

Your water temperature gauge sending unit is mounted on the bottom of the
right cylinder head. The plug on the radiator is a thermo switch for a fan,
you won't need to use it. I just cut the contacts off of it and left it in
as a hole plug. I did not cut any hole in the back of the radiator cover for
it.

I disassembled the terminal and reassembled it with the lock washer on the
bottom of the plate inside the tank to get additional clearance and then
ground down the end of the screw flush with the top of the nut. I also
installed an access cover over the sending unit. I didn't ask ZAC about it,
it shouldn't effect the structural strength.

Today, I did the same...put the lock washer underneath and ground it all
down. After this I had plenty of clearance, so I didn't bother with the
access cover.
I think the key is to move the lock washer, and to grind down the
plastic washer to about half its thickness (ZAC send me pics like
this)...at that point, its all pretty low profile.
If I hear back from ZAC on the access cover I'll post back...
