"Riveting a loose nose skin to the bottom per ZAC instructions
after it's flipped doesn't sound too easy either. Does anyone have a special
technique? It isn't heavy, but it surely is awkward..."
Robert: I tried that on my right 701 wing and it went pretty well. Flipped
the wing over so the top front spar cap overhung the edge of the edge of the
workbench by 20mm or so, then used sawhorses and some scrap plywood, etc to make
a temporary shelf beside the bench an inch or so below the spar. Slid the
nose skin onto the shelf, then work got down on my back and cleco'd it from
underneath. Was pretty easy, and no risk to the nose skin.

Subject: | Is a CH601HD taildragger the right aircraft for a short strip? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Steve Boxall" <steve@brobdignag.flyer.co.uk>
Can anyone advise on how a 601 taildragger (Rotax 912, no flaps) might handle regular
operation from a short (300m / 1000ft) grass strip?
Takeoff performance doesn't appear to be an issue, but I'm wondering about how
the aircraft pitch attitude without flaps would affect a short field landing (can
you see the strip to jockey yourself right on to the end) and can you see
over the nose once you've landed so that you can see where you are on the strip
(will the aircraft stop in time, or should I go round)?
Any other thoughts / comments about operating from a strip this length?
The strip is largely used my microlights, and has about 200m / 600ft at each end
before any obstacles (a stand of trees at one end, a wire fence at the other).
Thanks
Steve

Hi;
Landing will be the problem. If you can drag it in to the approach, it
will be OK. If the approach has to be high to clear an obstacle, you
will need a headwind.

What follows is purely personal.
One of the two things everybody has is an opinion.
I'm a member of this list, like most others, to exchange ideas as we build aircraft.
Most of us are intelligent enough to select a source of materials, supplies and
tools.
The last thing we need is commercial venture monitoring the list, then jumping
in
at every opportunity to hawk their wares.
Don't call us, we'll call you, Brown Tool.
That goes for 'Spruce, Czech Aeroplane Kompany, and everybody else.
Thank you very much.

I have to disagree (my two cents). As long as it is done professionally
and pertains to an active topic then it is OK.
Chip Erwin of Czech Aircraft has more experience building and flying
Zenith aircraft in different configurations than anyone on the planet.
His opinion on topics are always welcome and OK with me.

Hello Zed,
I have something important to say here...
I can tell that, for what I remember, all the time that Chip (from
Czech Aircraft) has posted something in the list, is mostly something
related with the flying and construction of our airplanes HE IS ONE OF
US!
Is like having Nick, Sebastien or Mr Chris Heintz itself monitoring and
giving advise to us.
Just try to ask him advice about flying the planes with floats and he
will give the advise FREE to you without even thinking.
Everytime he has answered off list a question to me, is a real honor
and is always great advise.
I dont think that there is someone of us (in this list) with more
experience building and flying our aiplanes (601's or 701) that Chip,
and here you can find real experts in machinery that we all inmediatly
recognize as experts without looking their credentials.
Zed: Honestly, Chip deserves an apoligy from you.

Mr. Zed Smith:
Thank you for sharing your opinion about "advertisements" on the Zenith List
owned by Matronics and Matt Dralle. I have been a member of the list for
several years and post an "advertisement" about once a year on average. Matt has
in the past made it very clear that occasional commercial announcements are ok
with him as long as they are not pervasive and have relevance. I feel I have
met both of those criteria. I do not know how long you have been on the list,
but I am sure you can check the archives to review the history of this
subject.
I would also point out that Brown Aviation Tool Supply has in the past and
will continue to in the future make donations to the Matronics lists. As a
matter of fact we have in the past donated Gift Certificates for Matt to offer
as
incentives to contributors to the list. We are not some company lurking in the
background waiting to "hawk our wares at every opportunity" as you suggested.
We serve thousands of Kit Builders (including many Zenith builders) all over
the world and are pleased to do so. If the general consensus of the Zenith
List family is "go away", I will do exactly that....there is no sense "lurking"
where we are unwanted.
The following blurb is pasted from the List Usage Guidelines and is a quote
from Matt:
"I will often offer you free gifts with certain contribution levels during
the
Fund Raiser to increase the participation. The gifts are usually
donated
When I do post a message, the last thing in the world I want to do is offend
anyone - that is why I clearly indicate that my post is an advertisement, so
that you can quickly hit your delete key and move on to more pressing matters.
I can tell you that many listers responded in a positive way to my post as
evidenced by the very large increase in visits to the surplus section of our
website last evening, and if you havent visited yet, you are missing out :-)

Well, at least it had something to do with aircraft instead of tractors. If
I wanted to know which tractor is best, I will go to a tractor list.
I like a little advertisement once in a while, they can be very informative.
I am also a sucker for bargains. I didn't know Brown Tool existed, now it's
on my list for the next time I need a tool.
I get about every aircraft magazine there is and have to admit I spend about
half the time looking at the advertisements and, so do the rest of you if
you would admit it.
I would object if we had a lot of advertisement type posting, but we don't,
so leave it alone. If it gets out of hand, I am sure Mat will take care of
it. Plus, getting off the list is real easy.

P.S. I got a New Holland and like it.

My HDS tail dragger slows down really fast. With the longer, fatter wings and lighter
weight the HD should do pretty well. Seeing will be no problem. Wheel land
or pop the tail up after touchdown and carry it up til it settles in at about
25 mph. You will need a little more room with a passenger...more momentum...
use your brakes. It looks like you have 2200 feet to work with if you need
to...if the 600 on each end is okay for roll out. I think you can do it if you
are okay with making precision landings every time you have to come in over
the trees and don't mind using the brakes. don walker-- Original Message -----

I will say that Mr. Brown's (very infrequent) posts do not bother me one
bit.
I am a Brown Tool customer, and have nothing but good things to say about
their prices and service. I have recommended them to my fellow builders and
chapter members, and will continue to do so. Considering the fact that they
specialize in tools for building metal airplanes, I see no reason to be
hostile towards them, and I certainly don't see any abuse going on here.
I look at it this way: The one or two yearly airplane-related
"advertisements" on this Matronics-supported list is FAR better than all of
the spam forced down my throat on the Yahoo lists on a daily basis.
Count your blessings.

Come on guys. Brown Tool is one of us. They are an essential part of the building
game and anytime they want to be helpful, either with advice or saving us
money, I'm all for it. In the past when I have called their shop, I have found
their advice to be very honest and helpful even if it didn't result in a sale.
Let's save the flames for the guys out to make a quick buck for things we
don't need. Robert Schoenberger 701 40% Do not archive.

Frankly - this thread is more annoying than any advertisement...
