Hello. I was wondering what people are using for
corrosion protection on the inside of your steel
tubing (control rods, torque tubes, front landing gear
etc). I haven't seen any postings on this topic, so
any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does anyone on the list have any comments or numbers concerning the effect
of adding lift strut fairings to a 801 or 701 Zenith design?

Here is my solution to the wing locker hinge setup.. Seems to work quite
well. Hinges are hidden. In case anyone is interested.

      Roger,
While the hinges certainly look beefy, I'd hope the leading edge of the lid
is reinforced to the extent that the lift generated doesn't create a flutter
condition or permit the corners to pull into the airstream. I added extra
Dzus and angle but still see a little lift in the areas where Dzus fasteners
are secured in flight well aft of the hinge line.
The other thing would be the number and strength of fasteners along the
"hinge line" are reduced. I wouldn't want to lose a panel in a steep
      pullout,
but this presumes you've done preliminary stress and test evaluation.

      Respecfully,

Larry McFarland - 601HDS (in flight testing)

The forward edge of the cover slides under a 'lip' sticking out from a shim
placed between the leading edge skin and the upper rear skin. It sticks out
about 5/16 ths of an inch and runs the full length of the cover. This traps the

front edge of the cover and seals it from the wind and hopefully, the weather.

When the cover is closed the forward edge rests on the side rails as well as
on top of the angle placed under the spar cap. The hinges are placed up and
away from the forward edge so it will slide down and forward at the same time,

winding up wedged under the lip. This leaves no visible gaps. I have more photos

      if anyone is interested.

Just wanted to let the list know that I tried ordering gas springs from McMaster-Carr
for my canopy and was refused because I used the airport address for shipping.
Apparrently gas springs are considered hazzardous materials and can not
be used or carriedon airplanes. Geez I didn't know that my 601HD and me might
be considered a hazzard or terrorist threat. Now I have to find another source.
Anyone have any ideas? They would sell me any bolts, screws, latches etc because
they are not considered hazzardous. They won't even let me reorder using
a different address now. So guys gals beware of having anything sent to the
airport where you might be building.

I've decided to use the Dynon EFIS and it uses two tubes, one for Pitot and
one for AOA. I've already run the two tubes in the wings for the Zenith
Pitot-Static and don't want to have to run another into the wing.

So my question, is there a place on the Fuselage of the 601XL that is better
than others for placement of a static port?

They did the same thing to me. They wouldn't explain it other than my
address had gyrostabs in it and I was coded not to get hazardous materials.
That's all the girl I talked to would say. I asked "how do I change it",
she said "you can't that's the way it's coded". That is so stupid. I do a
lot of fiberglassing and order all kinds of hazardous materials, e.g.,
resin, thinners, cleaners, waxes, etc, from other places all the time
without a problem. I tried to explain that to McMasters, but they wouldn't
even answer me. I've been one of the biggest advocates for McMasters, and
that really pissed me off. So I look elsewhere for what I need.
I think you can go to NAPA and they generally have the specs for almost
anything you need, so you can order by size, pressure, etc.
I'll check it out next week and report back.

I riveted my nose skin before turning the wing over. I used duct tape
to curl the nose skin about half way or so to the spar. My wife and I
then turned the wing over. Worked very well.

"Riveting a loose nose skin to the bottom per ZAC instructions
after it's flipped doesn't sound too easy either. Does anyone
have a special technique? It isn't heavy, but it surely is
      awkward..."

Robert: I tried that on my right 701 wing and it went pretty well.
Flipped the wing over so the top front spar cap overhung the edge of
the edge of the workbench by 20mm or so, then used sawhorses and some
scrap plywood, etc to make a temporary shelf beside the bench an inch
or so below the spar. Slid the nose skin onto the shelf, then work
got down on my back and cleco'd it from underneath. Was pretty easy,
and no risk to the nose skin.
