The Dynon has one electrical plug in the back, so the unwiring shouldn't
create much of an issue. I have yet to see any negative comments from
anyone flying behind a Dynon EFIS, if anyone has any please share them.
The 701 has a different flight envelope than the 601 that I'm building, but
for the price I haven't seen anything else on the market that compares. I
think all pitot systems tend to be pretty inaccurate below 40kts. Take a
look at a certified planes POH for calibrated airspeeds. Since that's what
the 701 does best I'm sure there are some 701 drivers out there that have
addressed that issue.

Isn't placement critical? How do we determine placement for the VG's?

For those interested in some Teflon. I need you to send me your zip codes so
I can determine shipping. I'm on the east coast & shipping varies enough
depending on the distance. I'll charge exact shipping amount then round up
to the nearest dollar.
Also let me know what lengths I should cut it to.
Thanks

Anyone know how Zenith recommends attaching the lift strut fairings? I was
thinking about using a few PK screws or A4 rivets. My 701 cruises at 88mph. I
am hoping to get it to 90mph even.

Ok, I set up a page with all instructions on it. This should make things
smoother & less work for me emailing everyone individually... with pics so
you can see what I have.
If you already emailed me with your order details & address then no need to
do it again. Wait till I email you back with the cost.
This link should get you there...

Since we are of the "don't rivet anything until you absolutely have to" school,
our 801 project has developed a voracious appetite for clecoes. We find that
we have once again run out of copper (bronze?) and silver clecoes.
Anybody want to get rid of a bunch of clecoes? We'll pay top dollar AND we'll
inscribe your name on some interior part of the 801, as a lasting tribute. Failing
that, if anyone knows the cheapest source for clecoes, I'm all ears.

Better yet -- get a product called "Goof Off", available at all hardware stores.
Squirt it on, and in about 15 seconds the label will peel off.

Or maybe, with the original step assembly mounted inside the fuse, it could
rotate so that the outside arm which is normally vertical would be
horizontal in flight along the lower longeron. Then you could put a
fairing on the step which pointed down when the step was in the down
position for use, but would fair the step when the step was in the up
position alongside the fuselage.

still stay outside, if it ended up directly behind the wing trailing edge in
the retracted position, it would have nearly no drag.

The DAR came up Saturday and did the airworthiness inspection. He didn=B9t
like the Dymo labels on my panel. Fortunately, I had already bought the
sheets of vinyl panel labels from ACS and had them with me, he told me to
replace my panel labels before flying the plane and signed off the forms. I
spent the rest of the day relabeling the panel. Sunday, I had a few more
details to take care of and by the time I was done the weather was looking
too bad for a first flight attempt.
This morning, the weather was clear but it was a bit breezy. There was a
direct crosswind on the long runway that I wanted to use so I decided to do
a few runs down 18. I did a few short hops down runway 18 to get a feel for
the handling of the plane then I took it to runway 24 for the first flight.
Even though this meant a 10-12 knot direct crosswind, I didn=B9t want to take
off on 18 because there is a subdivision just south of the runway. A takeoff
from runway 24 puts you right over the freeway and a possible emergency
landing area.
The takeoff was relatively uneventful. At 1150 lbs, I don=B9t think I used 500
ft of runway. As soon as I got airborne I found out how much turbulence
there was, it turned out to be a fairly bumpy ride. After climbing out at
about 80 MPH to 500 ft AGL, I started turning back towards the field,
intending to climb to about 4000 ft. After a few climbing turns at 30
degrees of bank I noticed the oil temp was over the red line. I decided to
cut the flight short and return for landing. I had originally intended to
land on 18 but as I spiraled down to the field, I decided 24 would provide
the soonest landing. The landing was not bad considering the crosswind and
turbulence.
I hit about 110 MPH during the descent and the oil temp was back to just
within the green by the time I leveled off on final. The water temperature
never went above 200 degrees. I had decided to leave off the air inlet in
front of the oil pan on the Subaru but I guess I=B9m going to need it after
all. Another thing I may do is to check the accuracy of the oil temperature
gauge.
After I got the plane back to the hangar, I noticed the nose wheel fork was
bent a bit and one of the bolts holding it on had rubbed a gouge in the
tread of the tire. I guess I forgot to neutralize the rudder before letting
the nose wheel down after the crosswind landing. That=B9s not something you
have to worry about in the Cessnas I=B9m used to flying. I=B9ve already cut an
air inlet in the lower cowl ahead of the oil pan. Next weekend I=B9ll have a
few more things to correct before my next flight.

Bravo Bryan,
There's always tension on the first flight & getting
reliability right. Congratulations on becoming Airworthy and
making that first flight in spite of the crosswind. Shows real grit.

Congratulations on the first flight! Isn't it wonderful to actually fly
something you built?
I think it is interesting how DAR's seem to make up their own rules. I'd
like to see where the reg is that says you can't use Dynamo labels. My
labels were printed with a Brother labeler and my DAR didn't have any
problem with them. As long as they are reasonably visible, indicate what
the switch/knob/whatever is for, and which direction activates/deactivates
it, than what difference does it make. A permanent marker should work for
that matter as long as it is legible.

He was concerned that they might come unstuck in the heat inside the canopy
and fall off. I wasn't too satisfied with them either, some of them weren't
sticking very well. He also mentioned that a Brother labeler would work
better, the flat vinyl stickers seem to stick better.

Dear Joe, If you are using the one that came with the kit don't be
surprised, there have been a lot of defective tail light assemblys. I would
suggest you replace it with one from another source perhaps Aircraft Spruce
or perhaps WAG-Aero. I had a defective one also.

Hello again,
My tail position light is flaky.
It works all most all of the time but I can't trust it.
But, I'd rather fight with it than replace it with an unknown.
What are others using?? I'm thinking I may try to find a used
position light from an aircraft recycler - any hints on where
to find one?
BTW I had to drill and install a brass screw in both of
my right + left position lights to properly ground the
press fit light sockets. And this is in expensive aviation
lighting.
Thanks, Joe E

Congratulations!!!!!!!! The first flight is a real thrill.
BTW, I too have a gouge in my front tire. That shouldn't happen.
It first appeared when my front bearings failed and the tire
went cockeyed. (I have tapered roller bearings installed now.)
But the gouge is still growing because the nose fork is not
stiff enough. It flexes. If you want to see how much just push
the nose back and forth. I need to replace mine with something
more sturdy. I'm considering thicker aluminum, a steel weldment,
or welding on stiffeners. The problem doesn't appear as serious
as failed bearings because the fork is strong enough to prevent
collapse. (I was going to install wheel pants but now am not so
that I can observe the tire, nose fork and bearings.)
