Hello,
I am the President of the Mid-Atlantic Region for Sport Planes, LTD. We
have exclusive rights in the USA to sell the following Light Sport
Aircraft: ZENAIR 601 XL, ZENAIR 701 STOL, Mermaid Amphibious Aircraft
and the Czech WT-9. I'm planning to have a Sport Planes, LTD exhibit
at the upcoming Virginia Fly-In on 18-19 September, but have no
airplanes to exhibit. You see, the actual LSA will not be available
until probably January or February since they still have not finalized
the ASTM standards.
I'm looking for owners of either a ZENAIR/ZENITH 601 or 701 who are
willing to bring their planes to the Virginia Fly-In so that I can show
them to potential customers as examples of what the actual LSA will look
like when they are finally approved for sale.
I will pay for the cost of fuel and one night of lodging at a local
hotel for anybody who might be interested in bringing their airplane to
Petersburg airport in Virginia for the Fly-In. It starts on Saturday
morning and ends on Sunday afternoon (18-19 September, 2004)
Let me know soon, so I can reserve a tie-down spot for your airplane.

I have a dumb question - what is everybody planning to do with this "almost
free Teflon?" I have found that solid Teflon is heavy compared to UHMWPE.
Any ideas?
Scott.

I had always heard we used tubed tires in planes because they are
subject to more side-load, such as during a crosswind landing, that
could cause the bead of a tubeless to let go. I know this was a real
problem on a friends Weedhopper ultralight. We put tubes in there
because we were always getting flats during landing with the tubeless,
mostly because of crosswinds and lack of 3-axis control.

Bryan,
Many congrats. You're now a member of an exclusive club that I hope to
belong to someday!
Sounds like the DAR was working pretty hard to show he earned his money...I
agree with Randy--magic marker should be within the FARs.
Drag about the nosewheel fork. Crosswinds are gonna be tricky if you gotta
center that nosewheel just before touching it down.
Happy flying,
Bob

Hello,
I am relatively new to building, I am working on the Stabilizer on my 601.
I drilled my pilot holes in the Stabilizer skin and some are not lined up
correctly to match the skeleton, what are my options?
1. Should I rivet those holes and drill / rivet some others that are
correctly centered?
2. Is there something I can do to fill in those holes and drill my new
centered holes?
3. Order a new skin from Zenith?
Thanks for the advice.

If you want some used clecos for 25 cents each, go to:

Make sure you copy the entire link if you cut and paste.
I've not purchased from these folks but I'm thinking about it considering
the price.

Brian,
Filling and redrilling depends upon how many and how far from position they
are.
But the best approach is to mark the framework where the holes are to be.
Punch or drill the framework holes first and transfer the markings to the
skin
using a hole doubler strap. Pattern the holes in the structure with strips
of thin aluminum
and cleco the first two nearest the edge and then ink mark from the strip to
the skin to avoid
ever having drilled a hole off the frame again. I drilled one off the
rudder once and did the skin
over again so it probably happens to everyone at least once.
It's not the end of the world.
Hang in there. Check out my site on the "center section" and see method for
pre marking, drilling etc.
Pictures in abundance.

Brian,
Can't help with the decision about the miss drilled holes, best is to talk
with Nick, location & edge distance issues.
As to laying out the rivet lines and hole patterns, this is what I chose to
do for the H Stab.
Buy some large sheets of VELUM, drafting paper, very stiff and you can see
through it. Available at most copy places or drawing supply stores.
Tape the velum in place over the skeleton. I taped it to an aluminum L angle
[hardware store stuff] clecoed to the spar.
Fold it down flat over the skeleton, draw the rivet lines as you have them
laid out on the ribs & spars.
Mark the rivet locations now as you have laid them out on the skeleton.
Fold the velum back, keep it taped in place or mark where it must lay.
Place the skin, fold the velum back in place, now on top of the skin, see
where the rivet lines, locations are.
Once you are satisfied with the layout, tape the velum to the skin, drill
pilot holes right through the velum, skin, skeleton.
This method won't work everywhere, but can save many miss drilled holes.
The velum is only a few dollars, and can be re used, roll it up, don't fold
it.
Hope this help's.
Jerry

Jim,
I am building my CH701 so I can't help you with the next fly-in.
However, I am interested in purchasing your new cowling for the CH701
that I understand has greatly reduces the drag of the aircraft.
Are you planning to sell this part? If so, when will it be available?

To the CH701 builders;
I received a message from Chris Heintz regarding vortex generators. He
states that he tried them on the wing with no effect.
He did not try them on the horizontal tail, but would like to know the
result if anyone tests them on the tail.

Someone fill me in. With the 701 (and 801) will the wing truly stall or just mush?
If the wing just mushes then normally the tail isn't effective enough to cause
a stall therefore that's one indication that h-stab installed VGs can get the
speeds down just a little more (by making the tail more effective).
One thing I will caution... the 701/801 is already a *very* slow and draggy plane
so it is really easy to get behind the power curve (adding more power won't
overcome the drag), especially if you go any slower. Something to keep in mind.
Also, though I don't currently recommend VGs for the slatted aircraft wings, I
would be very curious to see some tuft tests of the wing when it is stalling.
If there is a sharp break-point for flow seperation then I can say that VGs
should theoretically help the angle of attack get even higher (and hence lower
the stall). I don't have time to find someone local to test but if one of you
folks wants to shoot some video of a tufted wing stalling that would be very
interesting.
Also it would be very interesting to see if the horizontal is stalling at the extremely
high angles of attack that the wing is capable of producing. Same thing,
someone with some time and a video camera and a friend able to shoot air-to-air
could learn some neat things.
Chris Heintz' STOL aircraft intrigue me. Kudos to some neat engineering. I like
his designs in general, at one point I was scratch building a 601 in fact.
