Subject: | 912 Exhaust question |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Trevor Page <webmaster@upac.ca>
Has anyone here made a stainless exhaust system for a 912 in a 601?
Reason I ask is the exhaust I got with my used engine is not going to
work for me and I need something more "standard". I see Zenair makes a
SS system but my understanding from a friend who has same is that they
don't have any ball joints and they crack regularly.
I'm wondering if anyone has made something that works well and is
affordable?
Thanks

Are there any Atlanta area builders on this list? I'll be in the area of
Atlanta and Newnan, Georgia for the next few days and would like to see your
project. Send me an email if you don't mind the company of a fellow builder
for a few hours.

Your best bet Trevor is to have Gary Wolf custom make you one for your

Has anyone replaced the hinge bearings on the 701 with oil impregnated
bronze bearings? I would prefer to replace steel-on-aluminum bearing
surfaces whenever possible. Any advice would be appreciated.

Here in my city is a builder of a 701, he is not in the list, he is
building it that way.
He is a first class builder, has several great projects to great
detail, we have talked about this bearings, but I dont think is
necesary, the movement (in degrees) is so little that the parts will
outlast any of us just with normal oiling.
The areas with more friction are the landing gear (nose and main in the
601 HD and HDS) that uses the nylon bearings.

My Henrob is great...
For Aluminum my experience is with differing thicknesses of Aluminum
tube, .058 and .125. It takes a steady hand and a bit of skill but
welding them both is pretty easy. Patience is the key as using a light
flame, to start the puddle on the thicker aluminum then slowly drift to
the thinner aluminum, once the puddle starts you get the angle at which
the torch needs to be to keep the puddle going on both pieces. If
necessary use the rod to absorb some of the radiant heat if the puddle
starts to get away from you. Though, with an aluminum rod it can only
help you so much...
As for welding 4130, it is very easy to do as well...Choosing the tip
size and the appropriate flame is key to getting penetration without
blowing through.
A36 Steel is as easy as the 4130...
As I stated most of my experience is with .058 and thicker materials,
though I did try to weld .025 aluminum and turned it into a potato
chip. As that was not the focus of my welding, intake runners, cooling
tubes, and engine mounts are, I didn't try to find a technique which
works...
For me the decision between this and TIG was I had the ability to do
cutting and could do welding at the airport without the need for
electricity.
It is a bit pricey especially when you figure the total cost of getting
your bottles, hose, goggles, regulators in...
Your choice will depend on your needs...Relative to other oxy-acetylene
outfits the Henrob is probably the better all around torch...
Regards...
-Scott

HI guys,
When I built my plane 5 years ago I aquired a brand new canopy from ZAC
which I never used. It has been sitting protectively wrapped in the loft
of my shop out of the way of potential accidents(although not curled up
like when it is shipped) and still has the protective film on it.
It is a standard slightly tinted canopy not damaged or modified in any
way.
I was keeping the thing "just in case" but as I am now looking at
building a new airplane it might be the time to sell it to someone who
needs it.
I havent looked at the cost of them these days.
I'm in Corvallis Oregon so the floor is open to anyone who wants to make
an offer....:)

Sort of off topic, but not really;
I have the old style canopy on my plane. I used UHMW for the bearings
and noticed the other day that they are all cracked, probably from 6
years in the sun. I am making some more out of UV stabilised UHMW I got
from Noah's for a boat.
I was talking to a plastic supplier the other day and they said that
Teflon is not UV resistant, so for my application Teflon wouldn't work.
It has to be protected from sunlight.

The VA EAA fly-in is a very nice event. I've flown there several times both
in "ultralights" (my experimental Maxair Drifter XP503) and in my Cherokee
140. It's one of the biggest fly-ins I've attended in this area. It has a
strong turn out for ultralights, GA, and experimental aircraft. The event
coordinators try hard every year to make it a bigger and better event. Even
last year, right after hurricane Isabel, they had a good turn out, even
without power!
I highly recommend attending if possible. My EAA chapter (Chapter 4, College
Park MD) will have a big group fly down, weather permitting. I hope to see
you there. If I'm lucky I'll have my 601XL down there next year.
