I spoke with Matthieu Heintz at Oshkosh and and was assured that I could move the baggage/back seat configuration aft by four to five inches. Tim Ward from Zenair is sending me the additional drawings as well as parts to make this change. I still feel the back seat will be very small and the battery may have to move to the front, somewhere. The 640 sales brochure boasted the plane would handle 4 -200 lb passengers. You would think they might have portrayed the space constraints a bit more straight forward. It is still going to be a nice airplane........ Scott Moser new address is moscon@citcom.net

Subject: Cortec to Zinc Chromate-Should I switch?
--> Zenith-List message posted by: MElrod3732@aol.com I am building a CH 701 which I am going to put on amphib floats and keep on a fresh water lake. I have the tail completed and used Cortec VCI 373 as a corrosion protector on all inside surfaces. I used Cortec due to: 1. That is what Zenith used on the rudder I built at the factory. 2. Cortec being water based and easy to apply. 3. All the stories on this list about the difficulties of buying and applying zinc chromate. Now I just read on the list that Cortec was not designed to be a "stand alone" corrosion protector and I am concerned that Cortec alone may not give me the corrosion protection I need for a plane constantly exposed to the elements. I am ready to rivet the skeleton on the right wing and I need to decide whether to stay with Cortec or switch to zinc chromate. I found a local paint supplier that has zinc chromate in spray cans and the type that can be brushed on. I would appreciate any comments on staying with Cortec or switching to zinc chromate. Also, if I switch to zinc chromate, do I need to prepare the surface in any way and should I use the spray cans or the brush on stuff. Thanks in advance, Mike Elrod

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Chuck Deiterich" <cfd@thegateway.net> One side of the primary coil is grounded to the case the other is the P lead. When you connect the P lead to ground you short out the primary coil which then stops the output of the secondary coil which goes to the plugs. But the internal coil resistance of the primary coil is so low it appears to be shorted on an ohm meter, but it is not. Of course, if the primary coil is truly shorted to ground it would read the same on an ohm meter and would not work. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Slick mags > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> > > But won't this mean the mags are "off" since the P lead is grounded & the > engine won't start? > > Rich > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Chuck Deiterich" <cfd@thegateway.net> > To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> > Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Slick mags > > > > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Chuck Deiterich" <cfd@thegateway.net> > > > > Rich, > > You are probably reading through the primary coil which will have low DC > > resistance. > > Chuck D. > > N701TX > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> > > To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> > > Subject: Zenith-List: Slick mags > > > > > > > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> > > > > > > I checked the P lead of the Slick mags to ground & it is shorted to it. > > This > > > doesn't seem right? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Bryan Martin <bryanmmartin@comcast.net> In general, a coil will have a very low resistance to DC but will have a high impedance to the short pulse of voltage applied during normal operation. This pulse is basically one cycle of high frequency AC. Testing a coil with an Ohmmeter isn't very useful. You will probably need to check the output voltage of the secondary coil with a high voltage tester while the engine is running (or at least cranking). on 9/12/04 4:32 PM, Rich at rbauer@intergate.com wrote: > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> > > But won't this mean the mags are "off" since the P lead is grounded & the > engine won't start? > > Rich > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Chuck Deiterich" <cfd@thegateway.net> > To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> > Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Slick mags > > >> --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Chuck Deiterich" <cfd@thegateway.net> >> >> Rich, >> You are probably reading through the primary coil which will have low DC >> resistance. >> Chuck D. >> N701TX >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> >> To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> >> Subject: Zenith-List: Slick mags >> >> >>> --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> >>> >>> I checked the P lead of the Slick mags to ground & it is shorted to it. >> This >>> doesn't seem right? Subject: CH-640 REAR SEAT AREA
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "L. hatfield" <remax500@msn.com> Jeff, the CH640 I'm bulding is the prototype for a larger rear seating area. The rear seat is relocated back 6" for more knee room plus I feel it has greater back angle on the rear seat, It also has a bagage area behind the seat. These changes came about when I went to the plant in Midland to work on the aircraft and gain knowlege on building, we also had discussed the rear seating situation before I purchased the aircraft. Please let me know if I can be of any help with photos of the changes, the notes from the factory are still written on the alum. side skin LARY HATFIELD Speed & Performance in Real Estate >From: "Jeff Paden" <jeffpaden@madbbs.com> >Reply-To: zenith-list@matronics.com >To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> >Subject: Zenith-List: CH-640 REAR SEAT AREA >Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 20:10:37 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) > >--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff Paden" <jeffpaden@madbbs.com> > >If anyone on this list is building the CH-640 and has figured out how to >make the rear seats useable, please let me know how you did it. >At this point in time I am so upset that I have built the CH-640 only to >find that even my children do not fit in the rear seats. >I am sure that this flaw can be re-designed and that in time I will figure >it out on my own, but if any of you have done this already then I'd really >appreciate hearing from you. > >Thank you > >Jeff Paden >Was 99% complete, now back to 90% again! > >

    Subject: 601XL 6B16-3 Query
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Laughlin" <cookwithgas@hotmail.com> Ray: I just finished that part today. Mine measures 302. If your longerons are level and bolted up to the firewall and the firewall is at 77.5 deg. with the gear channel level and the floor at 3 deg. you should be fine. Check the angle of your seat back gussets. That's what sets the angle of the seat back. I think it was around 28 deg. if I remember correctly. If you haven't installed the gussets yet, be sure not to drill the outboard last two holes into 6B16-6 until the 50 mm wide channels are in place. The holes are not evenly spaced (my mistake). So you have a low-rider. Don't sweat it. Scott. P.S. I'll post photos tomorrow. www.cooknwithgas.com ----Original Message Follows---- From: Ray Montagne <r_montagne@mac.com> Subject: Zenith-List: 601XL 6B16-3 Query --> Zenith-List message posted by: Ray Montagne <r_montagne@mac.com> Hello 601 builders, I am working on the 6B16-3 seat back support channels on the 601XL. The drawings and instructions indicate that there should be 310 mm clearance between the top of the 6B5-1 rear seat panel and the curve at the top of the 6B16-6 upper seat and baggage floor support. Mine measures out to 280 mm. I=B9ve double/triple/quadruple checked the dimensions of placement of the 6B16-6 channel (i.e. 895 mm aft of the instrument panel which is 475 mm aft of the firewall) and all seems correct. There is no variability in the placement of the 6B5-1 rear seat panel as its position is fixed by the joint between the front and aft bottom fuselage skins. Has anyone else encountered a discrepancy between actual dimensions and the drawing calling out 310 mm between the top of the 6B16-6 baggage floor support and the top of the 6B5-1 rear seat panel?
