Subject: | Engine mounting brackets update |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Richard McLachlan" <richard@rodsley.net>
As I got a zero response from Zenair in the US, I ordered the new engine
mounting brackets from the factory in the Czech Republic. They arrived
within 48 hours, but they are different! Our original ones all have the
engine mounting bolt parallel to the long axis of the bracket (or it would
have been if the welds were still intact). The end plates are at right
angles to the main bracket, ie the whole thing is square at the end.
The new ones that have arrived all have the end plates welded at an angle so
the bolts are tilted towards the centre of the engine.
Could somebody who still has the kit part built look at their brackets and
tell me if their bolts are in line with the long bracket axis or at an angle
to it?
Thanks
Richard

Richard--
My ZAC kit XL, from early '02, has the angled front
flange, making the bolt perpendicular to the firewall
where it comes thru. Seems it would be a serious
problem if the bolt is parallel to the mount's bottom
plate (and longeron), making it angled out of the
firewall. I'm glad they fixed that.

Richard,
The upper bolts are at 5-degrees inboard of aligned with the long axis of
the brackets
because the outside surface of the longerons are at a similiar angle. You'd
have to grind
the outside edge to get them perfect though at assembly. The drawing I sent
you describes
this a bit better. The lower ones are parallel.

Its a CH601 HDS.
Thanks for the feedback. As all the ends were broken out of the brackets,
which were also bent, we had no way of telling how they had been aligned
originally. The drawing Larry sent shows it exactly though.
We have obviously been sent the wrong ones as the part numbers are
different.
Thanks guys

I am getting ready to take my hds to the airport and put it on the
scales for the first time. I had the displeasure of obtaining a 760
lb total with empty tanks, full oil, and full cooling system. I have
the Stratus with a BRS installed (which accounts for about 50-60 of
this with all hardware).
Has anyone pushed the gross beyond 1200? I read of one poster that
used 1300 with no reported problems, higher stall etc...
Currently given my size, I could never fly with more than half tanks
with a passenger max of 175lbs due to my size of 205.
Im a little depressed in that I haven't even painted yet and am
currently sporting the random Zinc Chromate/bare aluminium look
(looks like a junk car ;)
All info appreciated!
Thanks

I regularly fly mine at 1260lb and it does just fine...well it flys very
differently heavy but its perfectly safe and docile.
There have been several that have been plated to 1300lbs.
760lbs sounds about right with the BRS, mine was 683 with the Stratus
and minimum fuel.

Andy,
Don't dispair, the aircraft can be documented to 1300 lbs presuming that
you've reduced your G-load to 3.5 or so. I'm using 1300, weigh
195 and have an empty weight of 730 w/no brs nor paint yet. The plane
cuts thru turbulent air rather nicely, but I'd load heavy infrequently
and be carefull of conditions when getting near a gross of 1300.
I intend to paint stripes on the wings, just parts of the fuselage and
polish everything
else as necessary.

Speaking of the HDS gross weight... I have recently had inquiries regarding the
use of my VG's to lower stall speed for the HDS model 601 so that it qualifies
for Sport Pilot.
If any of you want your HDS to fall into the Sport Pilot stall speed of 51 mph
at gross I believe I can help. Though I don't have a set of my VG's on a 601HDS
yet (that I know of) I strongly believe that with my VG's you folks can your
stall down to the high 40s at full gross.
Any HDS owners game to try? I have a 100% money back guarantee if they don't work.
Thanks.

1200/1300*6 = 5.53 ultimate.
I think a safety factor of 1.5 is used which gives you a working G load
of 5.53/1.5 = 3.7
More than adequate for normal flying...I think that 4.5 is the Utility
category but its quite a bit less for "Normal" category in certified
airplanes.
So yeah feel free to use 3.5 or so....:)

Guys,
thanks for the info, I will do my best to keep under the 1200 but
won't be afraid of going a little over. I don't plan on doing any
hard flying so 3.5 G's will be way more than enough, 1-2 is probably
the range I'll stay in.
Thanks!

I have an NSI Subaru with BRS. Empty weight (no fuel or people) is 760. CG
is perfect. As long as I stay below 1300 (my gross weight) I am within CG.

Hi Todd: I bought my pneumatic rivet puller from Zenith last October for
around $80-$90 and it has work great every time I used it. Don't forget to oil
it before each use.
Happy building!

Andy,
I don't want to make any assumptions, but keeping the 3rd class medical is
one of the reasons
I run 2 miles every other day at 65 (for the last 5 years) and you might, if
you don't already, pickup that practice too. I was 235 once, but never
again. The 2-mile run provides endurance that gives back more than
it takes every day and it drops any excess weight no matter what I do
otherwise.
That's nearly a coat of paint or two.

Todd,
I used the air riveter for a day and went back to hand pulled rivets for the
rest of the
plane. It's flying now and the air riveter is still setting on the shelf
where I put it
I think you get a better job of it with the hand pulled sensitivity.

Subject: | Pneumatic Rivet Puller from Zenith |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Graham Kirby" <gkirby@yahoo.com>
Todd,
I've been using the harbor freight rivet puller for some time and was also
disappointed with it until I reduced the pressure to 40 psi or less. It was
very fierce, now I have a lot of control with a very gently action. There
was also some discussion on this list about draining some of the oil from
its cylinder.

I am starting to ramp up now for my XL project. I bought a air rivet
puller several years ago from Harbor Freight. It really sucked. I
remember seeing the ones Zenith had at the factory in Mexico, MO and
they were priced fairly. Has anyone else bought/used the guns the Heintz
boy's sell? How well does it work?

Would anyone be willing to sell me accurate paper patterns for all of the ribs
in the 601XL. I no longer have access to a plotter and I think that has to be
the easiest way to make the rib forms. They don't have to be cut out just plotted
on large sheets of paper and I can cut them.

I have used a Harbor Freight rivet puller for 3 all aluminum airplanes so
far with no signs of it giving up. The secret as it is with all air operated
tools is a drop of air tool oil every day it is used and an extra shot when
in heavy use. Also I used to turn the pressure done to 40 lbs but got tired
of changing the pressure setting when I needed the air drill. Now I use
everything at 80 - 90 lbs and have had no problem. Occasionally the puller's
business end should be disassembled and cleaned to prevent jamming.

The zenith pneumatic puller I bought along with the 701 kit has been in
constant use through about 90% of the structural part of the kit with no problems.
In fact if you count all the rivets drilled out and reset it has probably
done about 110%.
Do not archive.

I have a zenith one. Its not great, but as long as it lasts 'one airplane' I will
be happy! Its just a cheap import, probably the same as Harbor Freight have
quality-wise.

I have the 601XL ribs in my CAD program and can plot them actual size on 36"
wide paper. No guarantees on the accuracy, but I am confident they will work
as well for you as they did for me. I used them to build my 601XL. Perhaps
I can help you.

Subject: | Flap Torque rod exit hole |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jonathan Starke" <Jonathan@entry.co.za>
Hi all,
Zodiac 601XL - Flap torque rod exit points on the fuselage. I am at the point
where I need to make these holes, and the only measurement I can find on
the drawings are that the rod must be 50mm above the floor of the rear
fusalage.
There is also a warning that the centre of the tube MUST be in the centre of
the piano hinge...
Well I don't have a wing built yet, so how do I check this. Do I have to leave
the baggage shelf clecoed, until I can mount a wing to check this, how
critical is it?
Thnx for all yopur help.
