The specifics are as follows---The engine was recently overhauled and zero timed after sitting for 12 years. It was put back onto the plane where it had first accumulated 50 hours in 1991. The engine had been upgraded to electronic ignition, and the water pump modified to deal with the known failure mode there. Because of the water pump mod I had to move one leg of the engine mount back an inch and then the aft muffler attachment point also was shifted back an inch. In retrospect this charged the the direction of pull on the joint from forward to more neutral. The engine had been returned to me correctly jeted with an hour of test stand time with my prop and muffler. This was ealy June of 04. Over the next three months I put about 6 more hours of ground static time on the engine. The muffler had been problematic the entire summer, never quite able to get a decent seal on the connection between the manifold/muffler conection. This would result in some gas leakage that would overheat the springs which would become loose. I used a duel exhaust gas temp gage as my gold standard as to how to adjust the carbs, but it ran a cool 950 degree F. at he main jet size that was given to me(185). Over a months work and mutiple replacement jets the temps did come up to 1100 at 5800 and back to 1050 at max rpm of 6200 with main jets of 155, which seemed to make some sense as this is what is recomended on the charts..We then put another 2 hours on the engine getting various kinks worked out..Never did it run more then 1100 degrees, air or ground. Then last Wed in an attempt to finally get the muffler problem fixed I moved the attachment point back to the orginal spot and double springed the joint. I then taxied for about 10 min. All was well and temps seemed OK. I did not do a ground staic run up to max RPM while tied to my car as I had done all summer with each carb adjustment simply because it never occured to me that I had impacted the carburation system. On takeoff at max RPM we began to loose power and while turning back the engine quit. We landed on tarmac hard but no major dammage. I think that all summer the tunned pipe exhaust never really worked as well as it should and once I got the seal established the engine sucked more air with same amount of fuel, efectivly leaning it out to the max with subsequent temp rise to the 1400 degree range. I can't really say what the temps were on takeoff at max RPM as my attention was on getting back earthside in one piece. I did note at one point that the RPMs had climbed to 6600, something that had never happened before. The outside temp was basicly the same that I had all summer, so I don't think you can blame either air temp or altitude for the problem. Takeaway lessons: 1) Always do a ground staic check after any engine modification, regardless of how minor it seems 2) Its the little things in sequence that will kill you. Had the muffler attachment not been moved I would still be flying today with the 185 jets, happy as a clam... Specifically, a 601, 701, and 801 List have been requested. I personally think that splitting the List will generally reduce the over all content and I prefer the single list. Discussions breed other discussions, and so on and that's what keeps the list alive and healthy. That being said, as the List administrator, I want to provide the kind of service that the members want, so I'm open to discussion on the topic. Rather than chew up a whole lot of bandwidth on the Zenith-List on the subject, I have created a simple survey form that will allow all the members to vote on what they personally would like to see. Basically, there are three options: 1) Keep it the same. One List (Zenith-List) that services all models. 2) Add three new model-specific lists for the 601, 701, and 801. 3) Add two new model-specific lists; one for the 601, and one for the 701/801. In all three cases, the current Zenith-List will remain as is. I will run the survey for 7 days ending on Sunday September 26th at 12 Noon PDT. At that time I will tally the votes and post a summary to the Zenith-List. Below is the URL to the survey form. Upon completion of the survey, you will receive an email confirming your vote. Please fill out all information on the form. Forms without Name and Email won't be counted, and duplicate submissions will be deleted. http://www.matronics.com/zenith-list/survey.html Thanks for taking the time to fill out the survey. The more people that fill it out, the more accurately the results will reflect what the Zenith Listers would like.
