Mine is pretty firm too. I bet it's the larger surface area we have because
of the flaperon style roll control instead of the common setup in most planes.

Tom,
I am not sure from your description just what you are feeling but it
does not square with my experience. Stick forces are nearly neutral in
cruise and turn initiation in either direction takes little pressure.
My wife has flown the plane from the right seat using her left hand on
the stick and has no problems.

Tom
I have not experienced high aileron control forces in cruise. When I got a big
person in the back seat the aileron controls rubbed slightly. The controls felt
stiff on that flight until I lowered the flaps. I'm going to support the
back seat with a bracket off the covers for the vertical control rods this winter.

I assume Myrtle beach in Florida, Alex,
There's SQI (Whiteside County, Stirling IL.)
I'm only 20-minutes from there if you decided
to stop overnight, it's a decidedly friendly place.
Kelly is there and I have my plane nearby at Moline.

Tom
Don't know how comparable it is, since I'm flying a 701 not an 801, but they do
have pretty much the same geometry. I have noticed that if the ailerons feel
a little stiff, especially leveling the wings after a tight turn, I just need
to be a little more aggressive on opposite rudder. The 701 (and I suspect the
801
also) feel to me to require more coordination of the rudder than say the 172's
I was used to flying. Definitely more of a stick and "rudder" aircraft. Just
my 2 cents worth though.

Tom,
I have about 50 hrs on my 801 with Lycoming O-320. I installed the "no
slot" aileron mod. Stick forces seem right in line with Cessna 172 or Piper
PA-22. I infer from your note that there is no excess friction in the
controls when standing still.
