Hi guys.
It's getting cold. I need to heat my workshop. Just enough to keep my coffee
from freezing.
Easiest would be a propane rosebud on a tank, but how clean is it? I'm
really paranoid about carbon monoxide. How are you guys doing it? What about
kerosene?

I would like to trade a set of never flown HDS wings for a set of HD. Ive come
to he conclusion the quicker 601 exceeds the design limits of this pilot. If
you put vortex generators on the wings you could have one of the sleekest high
performance experimental light sport aircraft around. The wings are polished
aluminum with primer on all the internal riveted surfaces. They were built
with the Heintz aileron attachments, baggage compartments, dual leading edge
tanks ( 2 x 10 gal) electric aileron trim, landing lights and strobe / Nav lights
all from zenith. They tanks have a capacitance fuel system from Skysport
and were fully wrapped with Buna cork. $6489.00 has been spent on the wings.
(Photos available off list.). If you have a set of comparable HD wings built,
partially built, or still in the box, lets talk and work on the details.

The rose bud barely makes any heat...I prefere the blast tube furnace
approach...A bit (lot) noise but it sure cranks out the heat.
Its clean enough, mostly water vapour...Invest in some insultion in your
shop. You won't regret it.

The control stick forces on the 701 are wonderful. Very light and balanced
except for the rudder but it is not bad.
Are the 601 aileron forces the same with the flex skin hinges compared to
the piano hinged ones? I have only flown in one and it seemed quite an effort to
level the wings after completing a turn.

I use silicone sealer, GE Silicone II, to seal the front edge of my 601.
Outline the area you want the silicone to be with masking tape. I smear a
thin coat of white grease on the meeting surfaces as a release. Close the
door and let it set for 2 days. It will stick somewhat on the first opening
but not again. lightly trace the edge of the masking tape with a razor and
peel off the excess silicone on the tape. Wipe off the grease with some gas
on a rag. You will have a custom molded gasket on your door. If the door
flexes it will still let air in. I've used this technique several times with
excellent results.

Hey gang,
Im thinking about the interior, and I think a friend of the family is going to
do our interior. Just wondering if anyone has a set of exact plans, or dimensions
for the interior of an xl.
Also, Im still looking for a corvair engine core, or project engine around, (and
i use that term loosely), St.Louis, MO. If responding to the plans, you may
respond on list, but if responding to the engine, please do so privately. Thanks
for any help.

I used a wick type kerosene heater in my workshop. It does put out some smoke when
you first light it up but then settles down and puts out a bunch of heat for
8 to 10 hours before you have to refill it. You don't want to use in an air
tight space though, you should crack open some windows or vents to circulate
the air. The same thing goes for any fuel burning heater though.

I think you will find the reason for this was not the heater itself.
Propane in fact makes quite a bit of water vapour. I think its more
likely that it was so cold where you were there was almost zero moisture
in the air. When you heat the air there is still no moisture but as the
capacity for air to hold moisture rises rapidly with increasing
temperature, it will evaporate it from almost anywhere...I.e nose and
throat.
Relative humidity in fact is the mass of moisture in the air divided by
the moisture the air can hold at that temperature.
Probably the heater was too effective at raising the temp. and the
relative humidity plumetted as a result.

That's a great question. After doing a lot of research and looking
around on the net I decided to do my own interior and live with the
results, good or bad. After all, if I'm going to spend my time INSIDE
the plane it might as well look good and be comfortable.
I'm glad to report that the interior of my HD turned out MUCH better
than I could ever have imagined. I must say though that I probably
spent more time on the interior so far any anything else on the plane.
The trick here is to take your time, take lots of measurements and be
creative.
In my case I made some fabric-covered foam panels on either side of the
seats and the space between the seats and instrument panel. I purchased
the fabric from a local fabric shop that specializes in upholstery
fabric for about $40 CND total. The foam I used is the blue stuff you
can buy at a camping outlet to cover the ground under a sleeping bag.
Perfect thickness and I had some lying around (free!).
Fabric was carefully trimmed and glued to the foam, put under pressure
for a few days then glued into place on the side panels. Perfect fit
and texture was just right.
Floors were covered in a rubber dot pattern mat, contact cemented.
Those turned out great as well but the contact cement was a little on
the tough side to get things right. Make sure you use the right
kind!...
Now, the seats I really beat my head on a lot. I looked at the
beautiful job Larry did on Macsmachine.com but I thought that was a bit
more work than I wanted to tackle (making forms and such). What I did
here was to buy 2 72" x 2" x 24" sheets of foam from a local store and
cut and measure them to my liking. I glues the form into the form
shapes I wanted. I made the seats in 2 pieces for ease of removal. The
back of the seats were made from 1/4" MDF I bought from Home Deport for
like $3 each. I used Larry's method of making a .025 bent lip to keep
the seat back "hooked" onto the rear seat spar. Fabric again was
purchased from the same store as before. Carefully glued, smoothed and
rear stapled to the seat backs. I was thinking of stitching the fabric
to give it a more finished look but in the end they turned out better
so I left them alone. If these seats don't work out then I'll go out
and buy some Obus Forme (www.obusforme.com) seats and see what happens.
Total cost for making the seats and side panels was under $100 CND
which is like $20 US :) Just kidding.
Go have a look at my interior pictures to give you some ideas...
