Matco axle assembly malfunction & solid axle
Cessna 180 (and other back-country, hard use Cessna's) have a option called
a P'Ponk mod, STC'ed from a Alaskan mod shop, called the solid axle mod. Its
made of brass and is solid brass, not a tube. These axles have been out for
a long time and were designed to keep the Cessna OEM axle from snapping off
during heavy use.

Mike,
Same thing happened to friend of mine except not so much damage, just a
dent in the fuse where the departing wheel impacted. He said the same thing
about the welding, in fact when he had it rewelded he did the other one for
good measure.
There must be more of these out there than just these two?

I didn't scratch build from drawings, Zenith supplied the parts which is
5/8". Actually just increasing an 1/8" isn't much improvement and wouldn't
make a real difference. The problem appears to be in the weld of the axle
to the hub, not the size of the axle. That's why I think a 1" solid
machined axle and hub would be better. The next best would to be to make it
(effectively) solid by inserting a cold rolled steel rod and weld it to the
hub extending thru the landing gear. Larry N1345L

Larry, a couple of things I'd do before you try welding in a solid rod.
1. Replace your current assemblies with better ones. The current 3/4"
design is an option, as long as it fixes the quality problem at the same
time. Maybe the Grove model, or at least something that will be technically
better than what you have. These, at the very least, have a "history" of
problems (at least one failure and at least one additional bad weld
identified).
2. Your rod idea isn't that bad, but I think I would not weld on the current
axle setup for two reasons:
a. Additional welding will tend to recrystalize the metal and
further decrease it's strength and ability to survive without failing.
b. It isn't necessary in order to get the same strength enhancement
you are seeking.
Instead, if this is your preferred fix, drill the back plate as you
described, but use a grade 8 bolt instead of the solid rod. You can put a
supporting washer under the head on the gear leg side, pick the right length
to add a nut on the outside, and it too would server to not only strengthen
your current axle, but serve as an adequate backup in case of failure. Just
remember to add a rigorous inspection to your checklist to verify the
assembly isn't cracking and failing over time.

I know for a fact mine are 5/8". I had aluminum inserts machined to go in
the outer end in order to mount wheel pants. This is scary that Zenith would
take a short cut that could cause death or injury not to mention loss of
investment. The more I think about it the more I am determined to fix mine.
I believe I will do as I mentioned earlier. Which was if some of you didn't
read my previous post, was to drill out the backing plate and weld in a sold
steel rod. I am considering making the internal rod long enough to go thru
(I like spelling it that way) the landing gear and thread the end to put a
nut on. It's either that or buy new axles, wheels and brakes. If any one has
any thoughts, please feel free to tell me. I do know I'm not going to fly it
with stock 5/8" axles. I didn't like it when Roger told me and I sure don't
like it now. Larry N1345L

Fellow 601XL Builders:
Can you provide me with the actual O.D. of the aluminum tubing from your kit
for 6-B-21-1? It's the aluminum tubing that forms the top of the rear
fuselage. The drawings call for 3/4" X .058" tubing. My supplier tells me
that 1/2" tubing has an O.D. of .84" which is bigger than 3/4".
I'm a little confused as to what size to get. Thanks for any help you can
provide.

Its going to be fun when I get to the pedal building part (I'm about to

short legs.
..just thought I'd share the other end of the problem!

I dont think that will be a good idea...
First liability is what is killing aviation in USA.
Second, now every experimental airplane parts seller and builder use
all type of disclaimers to prevent this to happen.
Maybe all that he could get is an axle replacement... But I am sure
they (Matco) will do what is in their hand to improve or prevent future
problems.
Just a thought.

Roy,
The Engine Manual for the Stratus EA-81 shows 260-deg F as max, 120-deg F
min temps for oil.
Most of the time it doesn't reach over 198-Deg F. in my plane.

Subject: | Mating cabin floor, firewall, and rear fuselage question. |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mark Stauffer" <mark.stauffer@comcast.net>
To all the 601XL builders out there.
Today I mated all three parts together and made the templates needed to move
forward. I finally got the firewall set to 77 degrees (what a frustrating
job that was by myself) and the upper longerons in place. My problem is that
I had to shim the front of the cabin floor (under the firewall) to get the
upper longerons level. I used the plywood templates listed on drawing 6B-14
that is supposed to bring the floor to 3 degrees. I had to shim those
another 13mm (total of 63mm vertical distance) to get the upper longerons to
level out, but now it looks as though the angle is about 3.5 degrees. (I'm
using a "magnetic protractor" - Sears sells them as "angle finders") Did
anyone else have this problem? My bench is level, I've checked it literally
dozens of times. Also, the only place the cabin floor template actually
touches the bench is at the forward edge (under the firewall). I've got the
tail raised so that the rear upper longerons are level and the they're level
from side to side. I also had a heck of a time getting the gear channel
level fore/aft and side/side.
I'm just making sure I'm not missing something. I believe this is a very
critical point in building and don't want to screw it up. Any suggestions on
how you set your fuselage up will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Mark

They are good enough (for the price). I used to buy the expensive ones
for my workers, lasted 5 years, now I buy chinese and last average of 3
years, a couple of them have already lasted 5 years, sometimes only a
year but at 50 bucks a piece... Sometimes with two of them broken I
can assemble one... Plain luck.
Is like cars, if you buy one assembled in Friday, will "live" in the
repair shop all its life :-)
An old mechanic used to explain this about bad cars (any brand could
happen).
