Hi guys, the saga continues! I've reached a purchase agreement with the
owner of the HDS and my A&P and I are going up to inspect the plane on Nove
18. I've been given some specific areas to look at carefully in light of
the heavier engine that is mounted (0-235) and I'd greatly appreciate any
and all suggestions that members of the list might have for things to look
for during the inspection. NOTHING is to insignificant since I don't know
the builder and the current owner really doesn't know much about the plane
other than it's fun to fly... Plane currently has 180 hrs TT and same for
engine.
ANy help would be appreciated!

The way that the hinges are set and the way the flap metal is bent, I do not
believe you can get it any closer. At least that is what I found because I
tried
to get it closer when I was drilling the hinge holes. As you suggest, the
only
way to close the gap is to have negative.
I'll take your suggestion when i set up the motor so that I can run
negatiive

I've also been using Cortex with a foam brush and can empathize. I've found
that
if you cut the cortex 50/50 with lacquer thinner it is more managable and
use
a damp cloth to wipe the side where some of it flows through the holes. It
cleans up very quickly

I have been using Cortec 373. I started out spraying it and decided...just
the opposite of you...that it was way too messy. And wasteful. I now use a
foam brush. I am only painting the surfaces that contact other surfaces.
Using a foam coffee cup, I use only a couple of teaspoons or tablespoons at a
time. Dilute with isopropyl alcohol and paint. If there's any left over (usually
isn't) I pour it back in the jug. The ratio of Cortec to alcohol isn't
overly critical either. When it spreads nice and even without being too
transparent, I figure it's about right. I know it seeps through the holes and
drips
around the edges a little...but cleanup is easy using laquer thinner. When I
think of how much I wasted by spraying.....well...I don't want to think about
it.

Must be something to those extra ribs, PegaStol uses 12, 13 if you only use
one fuel tank per wing. I'd have to look but I believe that's twice as many
as the Zenith 701 wings. I don't know how it could improve cruise but
strength it would improve. They add a little weight, but also increase
useful load by 100 pounds. You definitely won't get any beer canning

George . . . try a small roller. I use one that is about 4" wide. Barely
dip one side of the roller in a pan of Cortec and then dab the Cortec that's
on one side of the roller in spots about 6" - 8" apart. Then roll like
crazy. You'll get a nice thin coat on the surface. It sounds like maybe
you're putting it on way too thick. The foam bruch has a tendency to catch
on the lip of the holes and deposit excess material. Robert Schoenberger

Jeff,
Be aware that the mounts behind the firewall that attach the longerons to
the motor mount thru the firewall should definitly be inspected. These have
been found to crack and break off in one 912 equipped 601 in the UK and
probably
others will eventually have this problem. The problem stems from rough
landings
and rough runways over a 10-year period. It is fixable, but needs a look
see
for peace of mind.

Well ,all i can tell you is that after speaking with a prominent individual
in the Zenith Group of individuals when questioning them at sun&fun a couple
years ago with regards to engine selection,( and by the way i had in my own
mind pretty much determind i wanted a real aircraft engine in the 601 XL i
was building)
Upon mention of the option of 0235 this individual responded "As far as I'm
concerned,our prototype with the 0235 is as far as I'm concerned the best
one of the whole lot"
Hence ,needless to say i installed the 0235 in mine, with No Regret what so
ever at if i may add at 1/2 ,yes 1/2 the cost of the popular alternatives,
Yes, i am consuming a couple gallons more per hr. but for 15,000 i can buy
alot of fuel and have a lot of peace of mind to boot.
so my 2 cents worth is the 0235 is a plus no a minus in any way shape or
form...
I would say the plane should be just nicely broke in,ready for some serious
flying

a small piece of bandage gauze taped to the end of a stick. When I'm done I
just pull off the gauze and toss it. Its cheap, easy and may be more
controllable than the foam.

All-
I just had a visit by my Tech Counselor before I close out my first wing.
I've been
trying to solve/fix an oil canning -wavy- area on the spar line of the
leading edge sheet.
I looked at the archives for both the Zenith and RV with no real solutions.
I called Nick
but didn't really get much there either. Well ,in about 45 minutes of effort
between the
tech counselor and myself using
a heat gun followed up with some cold water to quench, 99% of the wave and
all of the oil canning is gone. It was like magic!
I was thrilled, I had tried everything else I could think of and nothing
had really
addressed the problem. We were even able to take a small depression out of
the
leading edge
Just thought I'd pass it on in case others have had similar problems

Hey...
Did everyone see Scott Laughlin's article in Kitplanes that just came out?
It's about welding101 his 601 parts... its a VERY good article on how-to purchasing
components for gas welding... and its a cliff-hanger... it seems we'll have
to wait for the next issue to get some of the final resolutions.
Scott... you gotta get the cutting torch head.... THAT's where you can have FUN....
I cant weld.. but I can CUT stuff with the torch... more creative damage
than you can believe..... a rusty bolt will never stand in your way again....
or a locked safe... !
Looking forward to next month. IFor anyone that has never gas-welded before..
this is a must read.

Hello Friends,
This last weekend was a GREAT one for Larry and me, we had both
planes, the 701 we built from ZAC's kit and the first one Dad bought
from Chez Aircraft, flown by our test pilot.
Every one in the Club got a great comment: Chip's work is FIRST CLASS!
Everybody loved the plane, hope it gets sold soon.
The one recieved from Chip, got here a few weeks ago and was final
assembled (wings and empenage) in our Hangar in our Club the same day
we got our 701 ready to fly.
The first one to get the flight test was "Chip's" white 701.
Our test pilot's father Mr Alejandro Fedorenko senior, was here for a
visit. He is the most experienced pilot in our area: Ag pilot, bush
pilot, corporate jetpilot, you name it 50 years of experience. He was
also great friend of Dad.
Mean time we got the plane fueled and gave a last good preflight to
both planes, he read completly the flight manual I downloaded and
printed, he liked what he read, so he asked Alex to let him join him in
the high taxi tests, in the left seat of course...
I was in the "ground radio". They made 3 fast taxi tests and Mr
Fedorenko asked me if he could "give the 701 a try" (was his first time
in a 701), of course I agreed, I never expected this great honor from
him. He politely asked Alex Jr. to "wait for him and join us", no
complain from Alex of course.
He got the plane up for the greatest 20 minutes flight over the strip I
have ever seen, was like a gentle air ballet. Got is smoothly over all
the speeds and allowed manuvers perfectly mastered, he explained each
manuver and speed to us though the radio, he finally made 3 low passes
to get the landing feel of the plane and made a real smooth and short
landing.
He got off the plane with a great smile, he loved the plane, he helped
us go thought the post flight check up. Once we got finished he told us
with a smile in his face: "Once you learn to fly this airplanes, let me
know and I will come back and will show you what this great airplanes
are capable off. Your Dad really made a great choice for you".
Next was Alex Jr. gave our white and yellow one the test flight. He
also was delighted with the airplane, We were the most happy persons in
the earth, once we finished the post flight of both planes, we had a
little prayer for Dad.

our Clubs yearly "Baja flying Rally". Up the Pacific Coast main land to
Ensenada where the Baja 1,000 Race will start, then fly down the Baja
