The PegaStol wing needs the extra ribs to house or support the spring
retractors for the leading edge cuff. Think about it..I order to sandwich or
support the retractor body you sandwich it between two ribs that are 2 or
three inches apart. You box in the spring housing with two ribs and
upper/lower wing skin.

No springs are used. They simply slide on tracks. Check my site under
wings for pictures. www.angelfire.com/un/ch701.
That might be one of the reason as I am sure there are many others, the main
one being quality and strength. To me it's just a much better product.
Zeniths are just ok, passable, they do the job. That's all that can be said
about them. They are what they are. Zenith takes the easy route (for them)
on every thing they do. I'm not bad mouthing them, just saying it as it is.
Larry N1345L
P.S. Just to be fair, PegaStol has a much better wing, but their
instructions and communications really sucks.

I'm not sure how heavy the 0235 is in respect of what the empty weight
of the plane comes out to be. Remember as a SP you are limited and the
HDS can safly fly up to 1300lbs gross. Make sure your target (or plated)
gross minus empty, minus full fuel minus your and your PX weight gives
you enough margin to carry all the bags you need.
Try to get the weight off each wheel in turn and grab the gear shaft and
rock each back and forth to check for wear.
Push the tail/rudder in and out, wear in the tail hinges is common but
is usually not enough to worry about.
Check the engine mounts where they bolt onto the frame on the INSIDE of
the fire wall...Use a mirror and a flashlight. Make sure there are no
cracks in the welded brackets.
Good luck...:)

Well ,all i can tell you is that after speaking with a prominent
individual in the Zenith Group of individuals when questioning them at
sun&fun a couple years ago with regards to engine selection,( and by the
way i had in my own mind pretty much determind i wanted a real aircraft
engine in the 601 XL i was building) Upon mention of the option of 0235
this individual responded "As far as I'm concerned, our prototype with
the 0235 is as far as I'm concerned the best one of the whole lot" Hence
,needless to say i installed the 0235 in mine, with No Regret what so
ever at if i may add at 1/2 ,yes 1/2 the cost of the popular
alternatives, Yes, i am consuming a couple gallons more per hr. but for
15,000 i can buy alot of fuel and have a lot of peace of mind to boot.
so my 2 cents worth is the 0235 is a plus no a minus in any way shape
or form... I would say the plane should be just nicely broke in,ready
for some serious flying Good Luck dave kubassek C_FDSF

N601Z. CH601 TDS, Tail Dragger, was inspected 11/3/2004 and passed, except
for the data plate. I know I was warned by the guys on this list. My
registration says the model is a CH601 HDS. On the data plate I added Super
Zodiac, this did not fly.
I had a brand new DAR, first inspection, so the head inspector came along
and brought another brand new DAR, so he could see how it is done. I had
three guys crawling all over and in the plane for three hours. They kept
apologizing. I kept assuring them that the time, I felt, was well spent. I
knew I was getting a though inspection.
They thought the ZAC turnbuckles were a practical and effective good idea
I mounted my Aeroflash Strobe/Nav lights to conform to the Fiberglass tips.
I did not install them horizontally and build up the mounting pads as
suggested by some on the list. The inspectors thought they looked nice and
streamlined.
Bottom line. I needed to file a rough spot on the left wing where the
aileron pushrod exited, tighten a jam nut on my elevator trim and add a
couple of nylon ties. They apologized that the data plate had to be redone.
What a pleasant and HELPFUL experience!
Now, if I can get my Medical back, I can go fly.

Hello Jeff,
A sport pilot can fly ANY aircraft that meets the definition of a light-sport aircraft
(LSA) as called out in 14 CFR 1.1. The certification category of the
aircraft is not an issue. Sport pilots can fly standard, primary, or experimental
category aircraft (including amateur-built), so long as the aircraft meets
the LSA definition. The aircraft does not have to be on any list, and there
are no "official" lists of aircraft that qualify for operation by sport pilots.
The aircraft simply needs to meet the LSA definition.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions.

Good Morning InfoFolks,
Any idea when the powers that be will promulgate a list of kit or scratch built
experimental a/c (such as Kitfox, Rans 6, CH701) that meet LSA criteria and may
be flown by a SP? As I understand things now, only certified a/c that meet
the regs can be legally flown.
Thanks again, Jeff Small 329758

Any chance you could expand on this process? I've heard rumours in the
past that heat & cold can shrink aluminum, but wondered about the actual
process, and how much shrinkage could actually be acheived.

DId you lose your medial or did it lapse! If it lapsed clean, and your
plane meets Light sport aircraft specs, IE.
1320 lbs gross weight, FIxed gear, Fixed or ground adjustable prop, Max
cruise speed 120K, max loaded stall speed of 51 MPH
GO FLY IT! If your medical was denied, taken away or any other nasty thing,
You'll have to apply for a special waiver.
IN other words, HOW DID YOU GET YOUR PLANE CERTIFICATED? Remember, YOU are
the manufacturer and the numbers you submit are the numbers the FAA goes by.

Larry,
Thank you very much for your kind words, is something great for us in
feelings, you can't imagine...
Please, to all builders, keep building... Is a great thing to see our
own plane fly for the first time, ZAC (and Chez Airplanes) look simple
to build and fly, they are! You will love how they fly more than you
enjoyed to build them. Keep them as light and simple as possible...

Hello Bryan,
Sure I will stay in the list, with lots of questions also (hope
"bright" ones:-): Now we are building our first 601 XL kit... and
another 701 kit at the same time.
Thanks to everyone for the support with the 701 (aviaiton is learning
always) and thanks in advance to the list for answering the future 601
questions. Now back to work.

we used the heat gun to heat the general area where the wave/oil canning
was. It
was heated until it was uncomfortable to the touch. We generally worked
about
a 12 inch by 12 inch area with the heat gun. When we decided it was hot
enough
the area was immediately cooled using a towel soaked in ice water.
My tech counselor indicated that he uses a surface buffer to heat the area
he wants to work on (I didn't have one thus the heat gun)
I'm still working some areas. It's not a perfect solution but it sure
made
things look better than when I started.
If this is not clear enough let me know and I'll try some more------------

Leo, if you weren't denied your medical (though I have a stinkin' suspicion that
is the case), go
fly that taildragger!

Hello Jeff,
A sport pilot can fly ANY aircraft that meets the definition of a light-sport aircraft
(LSA) as
called out in 14 CFR 1.1. The certification category of the aircraft is not an
issue. Sport
pilots can fly standard, primary, or experimental category aircraft (including
amateur-built), so
long as the aircraft meets the LSA definition. The aircraft does not have to be
on any list, and
there are no "official" lists of aircraft that qualify for operation by sport pilots.
The aircraft
simply needs to meet the LSA definition.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions.

Subject: a/c eligibility question
Good Morning InfoFolks,
Any idea when the powers that be will promulgate a list of kit or scratch built
experimental a/c
(such as Kitfox, Rans 6, CH701) that meet LSA criteria and may be flown by a SP?
As I understand
things now, only certified a/c that meet the regs can be legally flown.
Thanks again, Jeff Small 329758

Thanks George, I'll plan to try that in a couple of spots as well. And
just a thought -- this tip should probably be included in that 601.org
web site that one poster was nice enough to create.

I am about to mount my main gear tires, and went looking for some Murphy's
Tire Soap. None of the local auto supply places seem to know what it is, so
I'm wondering what else is acceptable to lube the tire bead. How about
using WD-40 or silicone lubricant? Appreciate any suggestions.

Try "Go-Jo" hand cleaner, or some other creamy (without grit) hand soap.
Ivory Liquid , maybe. As long as it is "slick" you can pop those tires right on
the rims.
Nearly any "slick-em" will do, but stay away from those labeled as having bleaching
action.

Kent,
If the wheels split, why should it be any trouble to put the tubes and tires
inside the rims and then assemble the wheels. I believe this might be
easier
and you'll not scratch anything.

My medical is still pending. I took the exam on 12/17/2003!!!!! A comedy
of errors and FAA inefficiency has resulted in the fact that I, THINK, I'll
get my medical approved in about two more weeks.
Interesting conversation with the FAA inspectors of my plane: I have a
Magnum Ivoprop, inflight adjustable prop. The inspectors agreed with me -
If I put a "Do not adjust propeller in flight" plaque on the instrument
panel, that makes it ground adjustable. The chief inspector said, "Who
knows what speed the plane will stall at until you test it. If you say it
stalls at 51 MPH, we are not going to question you."

What a laugh....Do you think a glassair 3 retractible could be LSA
compatible...I mean you could have lots of placards,
"Do not exceed 120kts, do no retract landing gear and do not cycle
prop"...Just put 51mph for the stall speed and everything can be flown
by a "Sport Pilot"....:)

Have you flown a 601 before? I have about 14 more hours of test time on mine, then
I'll be able to take passengers. I'll offer a familization ride after I'm
finished. Hopefully before the end of the month. Only catch is that my wife has
to get a ride first. She's been anxiously waiting for a long time.
