Anyone have the zodiac xl with the tail dragger conversion? How does the a/c behave
for a person with no tail wheel time? Thanks

Hi Mike;
My 601HDS is a tail dragger. You should get checked out first. Start
with grass runways first if available. They do require some extra care
in landing, but they handle rough fields much better than trikes.

Don,
I don't think Stratus should be faulted for a cooling system that Zenith
designed for the 601. Stratus rebuilders should be faulted for knurling and
reusing valve guides,
but overheating and high rpms are not caused by valve guides. Generally,
overheat is the result of
poor cooling by Zenith supplied radiator kits. I believe under jetting is
one of the things a user has
to learn about sooner than later, so the responsiblilty is his. On another
note, the right upper engine
mount has been corrected by Stratus lengthening the top diagonal past the
point where cracking begins.
I believe Ram Performance adds an excellent piece of insurance in SS valves,
guides and springs,
but I come to the table with the conviction that Stratus provides an
excellent engine choice and redrive
and that it's the user/buyer's responsibility as EXPERIMENTAL to learn about
risks before the fact.

Well, Larry,
I know you don't intend to be argumentative, but it sounds to me like
you missed the intent of my post, as well as where I place the fault for the
cooling. I thougt it was clear enough, and written in past tense regarding
the "history" on this list. As far as jetting goes, When one talks directly
to an engine builder about jetting an engine for his flying, then that is
what you will likely trust. It just didn't work that well with Reiner's
engines. I think much of this predates your experience on this list.
Initially fixes for the problems were met with denial and defensiveness by
the new owner, though he has come around albiet slowly and reluctantly.
My response was to Perry's question about how this developed, not about
the present quality of the Stratus engines. Respectfully, Don

My apologies for speaking out of turn, Don. I didn't intended to provoke or
contradict, but defend a good product. I missread the time frame from your
post, but I'll read more carefully next time.

I believe William Wynne recommends replacing the stock corvair crank with a forged
one, much stronger than original, but even so, as used in aircraft,at 2800-3300
rpm, it is not seeing the same stresses that ground racing applications
would produce. I can check my copy of the manual to confirm the forged vs. stock
crank issue, or as has been recommended, check out his web site for yourself.

Best I can recall from the manual ,is all corvair motors had steel crankshafts..
I have most of the parts to build one.. new rebuilt crankshaft and bearings
but I will wait to start on this one after my rv9a is done with the 0320
I want a 601xl td down the road..

Happy Thanksgiving List
I have a 601HD with a 70" warp drive prop. I'm doing my run ups and was
wondering what other people were using for prop pitch and setting for static
rpms for best all around performance. Warp says to measure pitch at the
tips.
Thanks
