--> Zenith-List message posted by: Brandon Tucker <btucke73@yahoo.com> Gents, To clarify, WW recommends using a stock 8409 crank. 8409 meaning late model stroke. I got 2 from the local CORSA club for 15 bucks each. Eat your heart out Lycoming lovers! I think I read somewhere that there has never been a case of a broken crank behind a conservative Corvair conversion. If anyone has specific Corvair questions, or just want to learn more, check out WW's site at: http://flycorvair.com Or join the Corvair list at: http://www.corvaircraft.com I was pretty well set on the Subaru when I started looking into the Corvair. It just seems to have a better track record, and certainly a better reputation, especially within the Zodiac ranks. (Just an opinion. Please don't flame me) Whether true or not, sometimes perception is reality. :) Respectfully, Brandon Tucker 601 HDS wings done, tail done, center wing done. working on rear fuse. __________________________________

Subject: List Contributors Lagging By 38%...
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com> Dear Listers, The percentage of people making a Contribution to support the Lists this year is currently lagging behind last year by approximately 38%! I'm hoping that everyone is just waiting until the last minute to show their support... ;-) Please remember that its solely your direct Contributions that keep these Lists up and running and most importantly - AD FREE! If the members don't want to support the Lists directly, then I will likely have to start adding advertisements to offset the costs of running the Lists. But I *really* don't want to have to start doing that. I really like the non-commercial atmosphere here and I think that a lot of the members appreciate that too. Won't you please take a moment to make a contribution today in support of the continued ad-free operation of all these Lists? http://www.matronics.com/contribution I want to send out a word of appreciation to all of the members that have already made their generous contribution to support the Lists! Thank you! --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave Kubassek" <dkubassek@golden.net> For what it's worth, having 30 years and I'm not sure how many hundreds of hrs of tailwheel time....... I find that i fly my XL (with the tailwheel at the wrong end) the same as i would my Aeronca Champ and as long as i do not rotate or flare at tooo high of an angle of attack , it handles absolutey beautifull on both movements. Keeping the weight off the nose wheel at all times as much as possible. At no time what so ever do i allow the full weight of the nose of the air craft to be pounding away on the nose wheel (by the way, i fly out of a farmers field)(I'm the farmer) No slamming or banging down of the nose wheel as some have mentioned... If i may add that when first getting the feel of this bird i was cutting groovves in my grass strip with my tiedown ring under the tail on both ontake off and landing, but you get the feel of it very quickly after reomving a few tuffs of sod after landing... Just dont rotate or flare quite so steep....... With the 135 hp Lyc. there is a lot of torque or P factor comes into play when appling full power on take off roll, but subsides quite quickly once a climb has been astablished. for what its worth i find it a very docile plane to both take off and land....... What i/we dont particularly care for about the aircraft to be totally honest ???????? 2 things 1 - I wish it had a higher canopy for 6"2 & people 2 - We as a family (self included) do not particular enjoy the extremely choppy ride we get when flying in any type of gusty/windy conditions...(we dont do ferris wheels well either) All in all it flew very well rite from day one as assembled from the box according to the manufacturers instruction. dave kubassek CF-DSF XL 0235 Lyc (For Sale,2 other projects on the go) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike H" <mhilderbrand@cox.net> Subject: Zenith-List: taildragger > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mike H" <mhilderbrand@cox.net> > > Anyone have the zodiac xl with the tail dragger conversion? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com> Being quite dissatisfied with the performance of my engine, I followed the discussions about the Corvair with great interest. I went to my machine shop this week for a new cam grind for my Subaru engine. When I asked the guy at the shop what he thinks of Corvairs, he said: "these engines were pieces of junk in cars.... I don't expect to be better in planes!". He laughed when I asked him if he would take a ride with my on my plane using the Covair. Well.... today, who can we believe? It seems that the only way to be quite certain of what we have is to put the $$ on an aircraft engine. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Thilo Kind" <thilo.kind@gmx.net> Hi John, same with my 912. With the new flight-adjustable propeller I can get it down to 1800, but the idle RPM with the fixed pitch prop was always around 2000 to 2200. I tried a couple of things to no avail and then left it alone. Airplane and engine are both sine 3 years now. Later Thilo Kind ----- Original Message ----- From: "john H" <professor71@hotmail.com> Subject: Zenith-List: 912 idle speed > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "john H" <professor71@hotmail.com> > > Hi List > I'm doing my engine run up and I've hit a snag so I ask for your help. I can't get my idle speed lower than 2200 rpms. I have the idle stops backed of so the arms are not making contact. Right now my rpms run from 2200 to 5600 static rpms. I know the prop has to be pitched to bring the high end down to 5300-5400 static but would this also slow down the idle speed? I took the motor and prop off a ground looped kitfox that had only 1 airfilter with 2 hose going from the air/carb heat box. I am using 2 airfilters so I assume I am getting much better performance with more air. Does anyone have any ideas about how to lower the idle rpms? What idle speed are you using? I know Rotax is recommending 1600 but that seems a little high and might contribute to a long float on landing. The idle speed problem is the last issue I need to work out before calling for my inspection. > Thanks in advance > John 601HD almost there > >

It seems that the > only way to be quite certain of what we have is to put > the $$ on an aircraft engine. Michel, Even then you don't know for certain what you have. Just ask those Lycoming and Continental owners who are forced to comply with expensive AD's on their certified engines. And even then, they are known to fail catastrophically on occasion. As for that mechanic, I'd just about bet money his comment was based on *one* experience with a Corvair engine. People who make statements like that are guilty of what I call "cat logic". You know, it goes something like this: "I have a cat. My cat is black. Therefore, ALL cats are black." : ) GM made *millions* of the Corvair engines, and for the most part their reputation for reliability in the car was as good as any engine of that era. When rebuilt and operated per William Wynne's conversion manual, the "aircraft version" of the Corvair engine is operating at a power output level less than its rated capacity in the automobile (unusual for an auto conversion), and is proving to be a reliable powerplant. IMO, the biggest obstacle the Corvair engine has to overcome is not technical in nature. Rather, it is the tainted reputation it received as a result of the ridiculous lawsuits brought against the car by Ralph Nader in the 60's. I cut the thin stuff by scoring it with a utility blade and then bending over the corner of my bench to break it off. Will this work for cutting the thick stuff ? Will I need the special drill bits for lexan or are they only necessary for plexiglass. Also, the assembly manual shows pics with that top lexan screwed in and the plans specify a4 rivets. Any input on which ones to use? Thank you for all advice. Brian Unruh

I have used inch boards under my straps. I have stood on my head. I've had the skin off then on ...*&$%# I've lost it! There should be a strap at each rib station. The nose skin should be snug up against the leading edge of the nose ribs. Look through the openings at the ends of the wings to check. Not sure if it could handle that size hole cutting or the possible flexing when opening the canopy without cracking. Thanks in advance. Jack in Clovis CA

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry McFarland" <larrymc@qconline.com> Jack, I'd not recommend cutting a vent in the canopy because it upsets the balance of stresses during thermal changes and you're going to open and close the canopy a lot of times. I did a NACA vent forward of the instrument panel and brought the air back in a duct that connected with a dual louvered and swivel vent out of the junk yard. See my site at the Large Assembly fuselage to center section, bottom two rows at www.macsmachine.com. The vent is tight to the sides and delivers a lot of directable air in the summer and is closed in winter. Cheap and easy to maintain. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jon Croke" <jon@joncroke.com> Notice to all Zen builders.... There is a wonderful spread in Kitplanes that just arrived.... Designer spotlight on Chris Heintz... lots of photos, history, and details.. After reading that... I was about to put the mag down... when lo and behold... there was the followup article from our own Scott Laughlin (601 scratch man) on gas welding part II, including a photo of Scott himself.... in dark glasses... Have to keep this issue... the rest can go... Jon www.CH701.com

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Mike Sinclair <mike.sinclair@att.net> Why would you want to buy life insurance? So Dirk, when things "go really wrong" are you going to guarantee that your aircraft is still controllable enough to land? Can you guarantee that you will never have a catastrophic failure of any kind? Never have a midair? Never have an engine failure over inhospitable terrain? I haven't seen a ladder tall enough to get down from there. Now to answer Roma's question, if installing a BRS you would want to go with at least the BRS 1200 model, it's rated up to 1200 lbs. and up to 145 mph. Don't cut corners on price by going to a lesser rated system. If needed, you may not have enough with a smaller chute. Also I took a look at the link Johann sent of the Swiss 701. One thing I seen that I didn't care for was a BRS located that far aft, especially in an extended baggage compartment. You are looking at least 30-35 lbs for the system. Looks like a surefire recipe to me for a tail heavy aircraft. For what it's worth, I've got my BRS mounted in the very forward / center of my baggage compartment and on a worst case weight and balance, I am still 2 inches ahead of the aft CG limit. I had someone ask me once if the reason I installed a BRS was if I didn't trust my piloting abilities or the aircraft. I told him it was neither, what I didn't trust was some of those other people in my airspace. Just glad a lot of those drivers out there don't have pilot licenses. Whatever, it's an investment that gives you quite a bit of peace of mind. I was bullet proof when I was 20, it don't heal as quickly now! Although if you are dead it don't matter. There certainly is a place for an All-Airplane chute of the type BRS and GRS produce, when there is no possibility for a controlled landing. I think you could land slower in 701 without a "BRS" and have some sort of control, than you could with a "BRS" and have zero control. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com> Second thing... accept to go slowly. You turn the handle 1/2 to 1-1/2 turns and you back of, clean the die (blow) and continue. Sometimes, you can do a lot more at a time. But never force the die. Michel (not a machinist, but I broke enough dies and taps to start figuring out how to work with them --- the cheap Canadian Tire ties and taps). --- Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com> wrote: > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry McFarland" > <larrymc@qconline.com> > > You're right, of course, use the proper dual handle > tool > and threading fluid and you shouldn't have a > problem. > Larry > Do not archive > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <Flydog1966@aol.com> > To: <zenith-list@matronics.com> > Subject: Zenith-List: steering rods > > > > --> Zenith-List message posted by: > Flydog1966@aol.com > > > > The 701 uses 5/16-24 threaded rod for the > steering rods.
