To keep the wheel off the ground. Use a sawhorse or
anything like that under the wing.
The complexity will be to compress the bungees so you
can remove the top plate and disassemble the lower
gear box. To achieve this, I made a simple compressor
with pieces of threaded rods, 1/2" rods and 2X4s.

I compressed the gear with a rig made of four 3/8" bolts and four
turnbuckles. Slide two of the bolts through the holes in the lower gearbox,
with the top end of the turnbuckles attached to each end. Then slide the
other two bolts, with a plastic sleeve over ithem to protect the aluminum,
through the gear forks, with the lower end of the turnbuckles attached.
Then just tighten the turnbuckles to raise the gear. It takes two miinutes
to put in place, and doesn't require disasssembling the wheel from the fork.

Remember the discussions about the hollow axles? To fix mine I pressed solid rods
about 2/3s thru from the back side.
A guy I know had a 701 with a Cont 0-200 in it. It weighs about the same as my
Subaru 2.5. He sold it to some guys in Texas and they had a hard nose wheel
landing and collapsed the landing gear. That's the only info I can get, I want
to know what bent or gave up, the landing gear tube or brackets. Anyone have
any info on this? Elmo (older guy who sold plane lost name and number of buyer).
I am thinking about beefing up my landing gear by pressing an aluminum tube
or another 4130 tube inside the 4130 tube. Constructive thoughts are very
welcome.

Hey Listers,
I have been really enjoying reading the list and the
great information in it. Like many of you, I have
settled on one of the excellent Zenair designs as my
first homebuilt project, but the question is WHICH
ONE? I have boiled it down to either a 601HD or
601XL. As far as I can tell, the XL would be somewhat
more complicated and expensive to build (tapered wing,
electric flaps), the main advantages being a higher
cruise speed and a slightly larger cockpit. Engine
choices are more diverse with the HD since the XL is
designed for 100-lb higher gross weight and 100-hp
engines. Fuselage complexity appears equal. I like
the XL wing tanks, but I can get that option on the
HD.
So, since I really don't care that much about and
extra 10-15 mph cruise speed, and I want to build as
much as I can from plans, I am leaning toward an HD
with wing tanks-only. The main reason is that
beautifully simple, fat, forgiving constant chord wing
with hingeless ailerons. Fewer parts, fewer forming
blocks, easier assembly. Am I crazy if I don't build
the latest version?
Thanks!

Hi Andrew.
As long as you are making your decision based on your needs and desires, how could
you possibly be wrong. I am sharing many of the forming blocks with Mark
Townsend or I would certainly have looked more closely at the HD for exactly the
reasons you mentioned. It is a great airplane. With another XL plans builder
in my local club my decision was easily swayed to the XL. Our past president
flies the HD (his other plane is an airbus) and I would certainly be happy
with a plane like his.
Happy building

Hi, Andrew
Valid arguments, no doubt.
Something to consider: the main landing gear in the XL is much easier to build.
Making forming blocks is fairly easy. Making a bunch of them is boring, but personally
I think it
is worth the trouble. The actual drawback that I see is the wing panels: on the
XL they are 12
feet long, while the HD has 2 outboard panels and one centre section, each around
8'.
This may be a factor, if you are tight for space.
Cheers
Carlos

I don't think your crazy but . . .I am plans-building the XL, and now that I have
all those forming blocks made I'm glad I spent the extra time. They are not
that hard to make anyway. Just remmember, there will come a day when you will
be looking back on the time already spent, and you'll have a set of wings-- the
Question is which set of wings would you rather have.

Larry,
Is important in this particular incident to know how "hard" the hard
landing was.
This is my point:
A landing gear has to colapse if the crash/landing is hard enough (over
certain values (?)).
The design idea of all landing gears is getting some G forces out of
the plane to prevent the pilot to get severly hurt... No landing gear
is designed to be undestructible, in the 701 case, just overbuilt
enough to handle "rough" landing spots (up to certain point of course).
The landing and aproach has to be planned always to prevent the plane
to hit the strip hard, if the landing gear will not colapse, imagine
how the plane could "bounce" back to the air, now in more uncontroled
manner and then really crash the second time, maybe sideways, if power
and corrective attitude is not applied...
In the May 2003 Plane an Pilot (page 28) is an article from Mr Budd
Davidson: "101 Secrets to Super Landings"... A must read for all of
us, new and not so new pilots.
Also you can read it in:
http://www.airbum.com/articles.html#How
A MUST web page for all of us! Great articles.
Saludos
Gary Gower.

Well, that was quick response....
we now have pictures from more alternate engine 701 builders, to now include
a SUZUKI and a CORVAIR in progress.
They are in no particular order.. I'm putting the most recent submissions at
the top of the page.
These, I think, are our true 701 pioneers!!

The BRS is a rocket propelled emergency parachute.(Ballistic Recovery System)
The company that makes them is headquartered in Minn. As I understand it, the
company president was flying a hang glider in the late 1970's when he experienced
a structural failure while in a thermal. As he was falling the 5 or 600 ft.
to his impending death, all wrapped up in the remains of the glider he said
he thought, " I'm a top ranked pilot,,I did nothing wrong,I'm about to die and
all the knowledge and skills I have won't change it. If only I had one last chance
to do something, anything" By some miracle he survived when the cables
and dacron of the glider slowed his descent as he crashed through some tall trees.
Badly injured but alive. He still loved hang gliding and wanted to continue
flying so he developed a hand deployed chute for hang gliders which have become
standard equipment today. As hang gliders morphed into ultralights in the
1980's the ballistic rocket propelled chute was dev
eloped for ultralights. You will see a BRS on probably 80-90% of the ultralights
today. They have also been fitted on some Cessna 150's and the newest ones
being tested are for even bigger aircraft, 165mph and 3600 lb. load.
I was involved in hang gliding in the early years ,(1974-80) when we didn't
have chutes. We were basically flying "lawn darts" off of mountains and I
witnessed the death's of 3 good friends and 2 other friends that were seriously
injured(paralyzed). I myself crashed/stalled into the trees twice with luckily
no injuries. I ended up quitting hang gliding and starting a family before
chutes became standard gear and later had 2 other friends who were saved by the
chutes. According to the BRS advertisements they have 165 saves in ultralights.
BRS doesn't make them for hang gliders anymore, somebody else does, I think.
Just in case yoiu are wondering I have no connection with BRS and don't know
anybody involved with them. I'm just building a 701SP and last Nov. 2003 made
some inquiries to this list about installing a BRS in my 701. The Zenith builders
website pages for the 701 has 3 pages of drawings for the installation
of a BRS. However, it is for the old style"short" bag
gage compartment and also really doesn't show what to do for covers for the bridles
that run along the outside top of the fuselage. When I made an inquiry on
this list last year I had several replies and one was from Chip Erwin who runs
Czech Aircraft building all the Zenith aircraft.. I bought my BRS from him.
He sent me 3 photos of the BRS installation they do in their 701SP with the long
baggage compartment and also sent a nice cad drawing of the complete installation.
He includes the complete installation kit along with the chute which
has all the preformed covers, mounts, bolts, washers, rivits, etc. The chute is the
softpak which is different from the Zenith drawings which show the cannister model.
The model number/weight rating is 1050 with I believe up to 145mph opening.
The chute is mounted on the back wall of the baggage compartment . As I am just
now joining the cabin to the rear fuselage on my 701 kit I have no idea how this
will affect the CG but thats the way they mount it at Czech so it must work
out someway. If anybody is interested in the installation photos, plans, etc.
on my 701 I can send them to you or maybe see if Jon Croke wants to post them
on his 701 site.
I debated with myself on whether or not to install a BRS on my 701. The debate
was about money and NOT about the risk of flying or whether or not I should
have one.
I just barely scraped together enough money to buy the 701 kit but I did get the
BRS and I have no idea when or IF I might be able to come up with enough money
to buy the FWF kit and engine. That's how i got into hang gliding.... a yearning
to fly but no money to pay the $25 hr. cost to take flying lessons back
then. Just $650 worth of tubes, cables, bolts and dacron and a rock cliff on
the top of Lookout Mtn. in Tenn. and I was flying!!! The 2 fellows who died
in the 801 crash in California last year might have been saved had they had a
BRS. I think I recall hearing that the plane broke apart over a 2 mile long area
caused by the failure of the horiz. stab mount??The odds are I will never
need to deploy the BRS in my 701 and the odds are I will never be struck by lightening
or win the lottery but somebody does almost every week and if it is ever
me I want that one "last chance to do SOMETHING".
Regards and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Everyone and please excuse the
rambling post.

I would vote for the XL. One thing that hasn't been mentioned if you're
plans building and I think something to consider, you can buy any part from
Zenith. What's wrong with buying the wing spar and ribs already fabricated.
You will still save a ton of money. This is what makes Zenith a good choice,
you can make it as easy as you want.
On the other hand, if you're happy with HD performance, have you considered
the 701? I spoke with Danny at Skyshops and their getting 100mph with the
912S at 4950 rpm. This might be easier to plans build since it has the shape
of a brick ;-) and if I had more time ....
I had the XL on order and had second thoughts. The 701 was always my first
choice, but I wanted to use the Corvair and in my opinion it's a bit too
heavy. You will notice that I was fishing for advice recently on the list
and I caught plenty of good stuff :-) I called the factory today and changed
my order to the 701 because it will suit my style of flying, low and slow
with great visibility.
Happy Trails!
Jake

I'm just about to put wheels on my HDS, and am wondering about corrosion
protection on the aluminum forks. I will do the usual Zinc Chromate on the
out-of-sight mating parts, i.e. inside of doubler, etc.
I would like to keep the aluminum look for a while, as I may not paint most
of the plane right away (if ever), and wheel pants will only be added much
later. I'm thinking of using the clear Alodine treatment for protection,
but I'm not sure that's effective. Does anyone know if the Alodine protects
by itself, or is it only effective as a pre treatment for painting?
Thanks,
Kent

Richard,
May I ask why you had to change the bungee?
I was under the impression that it would outlive most builders.

The part number is ITC-TH7009 and the price is only $29.95! That sure
beats the $150 kits that Summit also offers. You will have to also buy
an O2 sensor, but you can pick up a single-wire O2 sensor at any auto
parts store. I bought a Bosch universal O2 sensor, part number #11025,
cost $46. So, you can make your own exhaust-gas analyser for $76!! Costs
do vary for the O2 sensor; if you have a friendly parts place you can
ask them for the cheapest unit.

Anyone,
Would it be practical to add a sleeve to the cross arms that
might take up some of the slack and postpone the replacement cost
a while longer?
Just thinking ahead........

Remember the discussions about the hollow axles? To fix mine I pressed solid
rods about 2/3s thru from the back side.
A guy I know had a 701 with a Cont 0-200 in it. It weighs about the same as
my Subaru 2.5. He sold it to some guys in Texas and they had a hard nose
wheel landing and collapsed the landing gear. That's the only info I can get, I
want to know what bent or gave up, the landing gear tube or brackets. Anyone
have any info on this? Elmo (older guy who sold plane lost name and number of
buyer). I am thinking about beefing up my landing gear by pressing an aluminum
tube or another 4130 tube inside the 4130 tube. Constructive thoughts are
very welcome.
See Ya, Larry N1345L
Couple of years ago I spoke with a 701 builder at Mexico, who had suffered a
hard NW landing. A 5/16 bolt for the NW axle broke. His idea of a fix for
that was to replace the axle with a bolt all the way thru the NW bracket. Bolt
same dia as the axle.
Wonder if anyone has experience or ideas for strengthening the nose landing
gear?
One thing I have seen is the use of a steel plate, tow bar plate, under the
alum bracket assembly, and bolted to the strut bottom plate.
Also, the use of six 1/4 in bolts to bolt the NW aluminum bracket assy to the
strut. That is, two additional bolts, added to the four shown in plans.
Middle, front & rear.
This looks like a useful area for discussion. Ideas please.

In a word - Maybe.
My advice to you is to attend the rudder workshop. At the factory you will
see how they make the parts and ask any questions you want and get all the
answers straight from the horses mouth so to speak.
The rudder you build will fit on all the 601 airplanes - So if you want to
be crazy, then go crazy - You won't regret it.
Good luck!

Thanks Gary, That's why I asked if anyone knew anymore about the particular
incident. I'm well aware of the other points you made. I may need a
heavier landing gear because my engine weight is more than the stock gear
was designed for. And, I know that that plane had a heavier engine also.
The type of landing he made, may answer my question. So rather than replace
everything I was wondering if I could press a smaller tube inside the
standard gear and serve the same purpose.

Most of my visible aluminum is polished. All I ever do is keep a little wax
on it, give it a wipe or two once in a while and it stays looking good.

I like the steel plate idea, but I would like to know the conditions and
exactly what failed before I go and add the extra weight I may not need.
But, I would rather err on the side of weight than a wrecked plane. Larry

Is there a certain weight for the pilot and passenger I should use on the
weight and balance I send to the FAA?
Can you use any fuel amount? I am a little heavy for sport plane.

I visited the ZAC factory yesterday and talked to Nicholas about this very
thing.
I mentioned to him that I had already made the firewall and missed the
drawing change. Nicholas told me to just revise the fork so the bungee is
tighter.
On the DEMO XL, they added sleeves to take up the slack.
I hope this helps.

Subject: | Aileron trim tab question |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Trevor Page <webmaster@upac.ca>
Just wanted to ask the list for some advise.
I just received my electric trim tab kit for my HD today from ZAC and
proceeded to install it. Everything went fine and now I'm in the
process of setting the travel and deflection. I installed the trim tab
on my right wing since I think it will be move effective to counter the
"heavy" left wing while being flown solo (better leverage). So my
question is, right now the trim motor at the back travel limit has the
trim tab in a neutral position in line with the bottom of the aileron
(meaning no affect on aileron dynamics). At full travel I get a fair
bit of trim deflection in the down position which is correct to move
the aileron up and push the right wing down. How important is it that
I get some "up" deflection of the trim tab to push the aileron down and
the right wing up? Anyone have occasion for the left wing being down a
slight bit?
I had to trim the Ray Allen plastic horn to get the inside the horn to
fit but if I determine by responses that I need to have an equal amount
of travel in the up position I will have to fabricate a new curved horn
to give me the travel required in the limited space of an HD trim
system.

I believe the standard FAA airplane occupant weighs 170 lbs. The weight and
balance report you send the FAA must include the most forward CG case and
the most rearward CG case. The most forward CG case for the XL is full fuel
and pilot and no other payload. The most rearward CG will be pilot,
passenger, baggage and the minimum amount of fuel you would ever expect to
have at the end of a flight. In my airplane, neither case occurred at full
gross weight. Most airplanes are designed to fly with either a full load of
fuel or all seats full but not both. So max gross weight may include full
seats, baggage and something less than full fuel tanks or it may include
full fuel and a lighter load of passengers and baggage.

I have an XL but my experience should be apt for an HD also.
When I have a passenger my size or smaller and balanced fuel tanks my
aileron trim is close to neutral. When I fly alone I usually do pick
up the left wing with trim. Sometimes the trim tab is down on the left
aileron - big passenger and more fuel on the right side.
My trim tab moves the same distance each direction.
I think that it is best to center it - symmetry you know.....
I had a heavy left wing. I fixed it by squeezing the right wing trailing
edge. Because this minor change had such an impact I think that it would
be hard to have an airplane that was in perfect trim the first time it
flew. I effectively countered the heavy left wing, on that first flight,
by using right aileron. I didn't think about using rudder, if I did I
would have.
