Dear Listers,
As I write this its still November 30th so technically the List Fund Raiser
is still underway! :-) I've gotten so many nice comments from Listers in
the last couple of days along with their Contributions that I just had to
share them with the Lists. Guys, I really appreciate the kind words and
great support that has come in the last few days.
If you've been meaning to support your Lists this month but have just been
putting it off until the last absolute minute, now's a perfect time to make
that Contribution!
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
A special thank you to everyone that has already shown their support. I'm
compiling the List of Contributors and will post it in a couple days. In
the meantime, please read over some of the nice things people have been
saying about the List along with their Contribution...
Thank you!!!

Anybody know if you can paint over surfaces coated with Cortec or Zinc
Chromate, and if so what kind of paint would work? This is for inside the
cockpit.

I have never had occasion that i needed to have the elavator trim in an
upward or above nuetral position.
Only ever in down positions to some degree or other...
Maybe if the heavy flap motor and gear assembly was centered or shifted over
to the right side some of this left wing heavy syndrome would be
eleviated?????

I know various ones have asked as to wether or not to install the OPTIONAL
aileron trim..........
Believe me it is not an option you will ever regret installing...
Rather you will kick yourself for not installing.......

I know nothing about a XL or 601, but please explain how to revise the
front fork to make the bungee tighter. The only way I know to easily make
the bungee tighter is to make taller "V" notch pieces on the lower bracket.
Unless he is suggesting making spacers between the fork and tube to lengthen
the overall gear, which I don't see how that will tighten the bungee. It
will just make for a taller front end. Please enlighten me. Thanks, Larry

Hello bob.
Yes, you can paint over a Zinc Cromate primer. That is the main purpose of
the primer, to get adhesion for the paint to the aluminum, and corrosion
protection.
Just clean it with the appropriate degreaser for the paint you will use
and it will work great. I used the DuPont Imron 700 line for inside my
cockpit and will also use that paint for the hole plane.
Best wishes,

Subject: | Rotax price increase |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jake Reyna" <jake@lockhart-tx.com>
I've been expecting a price increase from Rotax and Jabiru due to the
current exchange rate. It's really inevitable considering the record low the
dollar has hit. Don't expect the administration to do anything to get the
dollar back up since a weak dollar is the only way they can figure to lower
our trade deficit. You don't have to believe me, ask Alan Greenspan.
Anyway, I talked to a Rotax dealer moments ago and they are expecting a 20%
increase after January 1, 2005. I would expect that Jabiru will have to do
the same thing, but I'll leave that to someone else to research. If you're
thinking about a Rotax it's time to be thinking of giving yourself an early
Christmas present. To heck with the kids and grandkids ;-)
Of course, this is a good time to buy American. Corvair, VW conversions,
Hog-Air ....
I've been good all year, will anyone consider giving me a 912S for
Christmas?

I have a question to those who have the Rotax 912 reg/rec.
Did you connect the C and B+ together for the charging along with the

Best regards,

Johann,
That sounds correct... there is a simple Rotax wiring diagram I drew at the

Dont forget a fuse in there somewhere....
Glad to see you are getting close to done!

Subject: | New 601XL e-mail list |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Patrick Panzera" <panzera@experimental-aviation.com>
I intend no disrespect by any means, and do not wish to cause any division among
the ranks, but there's a new 601XL e-mail list now available, which will
(obviously) be for the purposes of discussions limited to the 601XL.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CH601XL/
As a member of this list off and on for several months, I've observed that the
e-mail traffic is easily in excess of 50 per day, of which maybe 3-5 are
specific to the 601XL. Hopefully those of us whose time is limited, and
interests are focused on the 601XL, can have a resource for efficiently sharing
information.
We invite any and all who are interested to join.
I really don't know enough about the major and subtle differences within the 601
series line, and maybe the list should be open to any and all 601 conversations,
so if your interests are with the HD HDS and UL, please feel free to join and
participate.
Thank you.

Yes, I have been hearing the same thing... but I just sat down and
calculated how much 20% is of the current $13,000 Rotax 912S price...
Holy Smokes! A LOT of $$$
So I am considering making my deposit this year to get one before the price
increase. You may see me in a red suit at the corner with a bell and
bucket... but my bucket will be clearly marked: 'Rotax 912 Fund for the
poor'.
I am now becoming aware of how popular that Suzuki engine is for the 701...
I just posted ANOTHER set of pictures at www.CH701.com , this time from Ron
Dallmeyer who is very close to his first startup... his 5 pictures shows
complete details of his custom setup. We need to stay tuned! Nice job.

Thanks for all the responses. It's especially great when everyone just says
my problem is not really a problem, quit worrying, and build it!
Thanks to all!

If you put a spacer tube over the tube to increase the distance
the bungee has to go at the top, the gear should pull down nearer the stops
and bring the cap down too.
You should evaluate the condition of the bungees and lost elasticity first.

I have heard of some builders talking about putting in a CH801 nose gear, just
for those reasons. I don't know if they did or were just talking, but it is an
idea.

Think it through. Something has to give. The nosewheel stuff or the firewall
! When a spam can gets its nosewheel broken it usually crunches the
firewall.

Subject: | CH-701 clarity of manual and quality of parts for kit |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Wayne Tilley" <wtilley@frontiernet.net>
Greetings All,
I've been ghosting on this list for a number of months now and am finally close
enough to making a purchase decision that I'd appreciate your opinions. I've
got the factory info. pack and new DVD, as well as taking a ride in their demonstrator
this past Summer.
1. Is the quality of the kit parts what you expect (i.e. all there and not in need
of any additional work)? I've read in some messages that the parts are somewhat
primitive in manufacture compared to those produced by some other kit makers
and especially as compared to the finish on the Czech Aircraft Works planes
available via Sky Shop.
2. With regard to assembling the kit, are the manual/instructions clear as to make
the process virtually obvious? Some posts to this list have implied a lack
of clarity from step-to-step. I'm not sure if this applies to the kit or just
those working from plans only.
3. Open to comments: Buy kit from Zenith or 100% airframe from Sky Shop and do
firewall-forward installation myself?
Thank you,
Wayne Tilley

Interesting. That group was only created 3 days ago, has 1 posting and 26 members.
It is rather hard to be a member of something on and off for a few months
when it was only created last weekend.

Hello Wayne and fellow listers:
I am build ing a 601 XL, I am a technician by training and I can read
blueprints. that being said, I find myself like a fish out of water when it comes
to sheet metal work...but I'm coming along like most novice kit builders. IF
you are somewhat mechanically-inclined...and possess more-than-typical
resourcefulness and inguinity, then building this kit will be so much fun you'll
wonder why you haven't done it sooner. Now, does the assembly guide show
every little detail...is is 1000% complete? No. But, for 95% of the questions
you have, the answer will be in the assembly guide or the prints..you just
might have to search for it.
I find myself looking at the prints and reading the assembly guide for the
section I am working on ( and the NEXT section) many times over before I pick
up a piece of aluminum. When in doubt...ASK ! There are so many experts
here willing to help you cannot blame lack of information as a reason for
disappointment.
If you are at all able to do so...go to the factory for the rudder workshop
and demo ride. You are doing yourself a disservice if you do not. If just
to get used to 'the right way" is reason enough to go.
To answer your questions: I am building from a kit and I find the
workmanship good. If you choose to forgo the fun of building then go firewall-forward
only, but DO IT !
Best of luck on your decision.
Tracy

Wayne,
I have found the ZAC kit parts, and the plans/manuals to be very good.
The Zenith CH701SP kit is a 49% kit. We builders do at least 51% of the work,
per the FAA rules for Ex amateur built. ZAC support has been great.
Don't know about Skyshop Kit or support.
The ZAC Rudder Workshop was worth it, an eye-opener.
Good luck, Jerry

It may not be locked up. PDF files can get really slow downloading. Get at

I'm contemplating a Rotax 601XL FWF purchase soon and would like any
feedback folks might
have on the Skyshops package. How complete is it, instructions, quality of
parts, etc.
how does it compare to the Zenith one?
Any info to me on or off list would be appreciated
Thanks

Yes, although the alternator field switch is part of this too. C
controls the alternator field and does connect to B+ and the CAP. See

helps.

Interesting. That group was only created 3 days ago, has 1 posting and 26

months when it was only created last weekend.

Subject: | Zenith Parts Quality |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Howard Carter <howado@cwia.com>
To answe rsome of the questions about the ZAC kit;
I have had a few parts in my tail kit that had quality problems, but ZAC
has replaced them immediately, and in one case asked me to return the
defective parts so they could show them to their makers. So their
support is excellent and they are actively trying to improve quality.
Their drawings have a few problems, mostly drafting errors, but the
photo manual helps to clarify them.
The parts don't go together like an erector set; you have to do some
work in addition to drilling holes. Most of your time will be spent
measuring and re-measuring before cutting or drilling, and that is part
of the building process (the 51% we're supposed to do).

Pat, I've included a link to the results of voting to split the list or keep
it combined. Matt has been very responsive to Zenith builders and many other
groups. Trying to pick out one group of builders of your choosing would be
like someone starting another list to serve only Corvair XL builders. Sure
is nice to come to one site and get all the information you need.
You mentioned that there are 50 posts per day on this list, that's a good
thing. Some days there might only be 3 -5 posts on the XL, but other days
there could be 50. Just depends on who's yanking the chain. And there are
some great yankers on this list ;-)
I also considered starting another Zenith list. I have tons of space on my
server and a PHP Forum that would serve the needs of any group, but I don't
have history, no archives. And finally, Matt is doing a great job!

It's a matter of opinion. I think Zenith could do a lot more and still stay
within their 49%. I would say they are doing about 29%. I say that because
I have built other kits and know what other manufacturers provide for their
49%. And, it's a lot more than Zac does. Basically for the most part
Zenith supplies raw materials close to what you need. You still have to do
a lot of cutting, filing, bending, etc. Almost without exception, i.e.,
ribs, you have to cut every piece of aluminum to it's final dimensions. I
think we have a tendency to forget what a b##h it was after we are all done.
Nothing to it, Right? How many of you have trashed parts and reordered
because of cutting or drilling wrong? As for how the instructions were,
they are just ok, especially after you learn to read them, of course that
happens about when you are done. A lot of instructions are not logically
placed, but they are there. The pictures I had were before the CD came out
and they were in black and white, really hard to make out stuff on some of
them. Zenith had the best instructions of the three manufacturers I have
dealt with. RAF had a fairly complete kit and ample instructions. PegaStol
has the most complete kit and horrific instructions.
If I were to build another Zenith product I would order from them again, but
I'm not going to sugar coat it and I would know what to expect.

I agree with Jake though I have already signed up for the new forum . Mostly because
of fear that I may miss out on some of the conversation. But who knows maybe
it will generate more posts on the XL in the long-run. I would be all for
that. Its not a big deal to sign up for both and get them all delivered to the
same place, though I do see how toomany different lists could get confusing
and become a problem.

(I think) the yahoo groups are a PITA.
I tried reading them - too inefficient for me.
I use pine to read the matronics list serve messages.
oh - and the archives are very useful.
I have learned from the zenith and rv matronics postings.
And I hope to continue to do so. Stick around + keep those
postings coming!
