Zenith-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Zenith-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Zenith-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Zenith-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Zenith-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
My sincere apologies today! This morning (Thursday) at about 3am the
Matronics Firewall broke. About 9am I was able to bring up an older
firewall and got everything back on line, or so I thought... While the web
pages were working, I had neglected to add a policy that allowed incoming
email to get to the email server (actually the SPAM filtering
appliance). I just checked my email for the first time today and noticed
that I hadn't gotten any List mail today. Hum, I thought, this can't be good!!
Anyway, I'm going to enable incoming email now on the firewall and things
should be back to normal. I'm sure sorry for the oversight. Hopefully
nobody had any withdrawals from lack of List banter today!! :-)
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

Sorry for the repeated messages on this topic ( DO NOT ARCHIVE) but we just had ANOTHER fine set of pictures submitted for 701 builders interested in CORVAIR conversions....Roy Szarafinski appears to have progressed the furtherst that I've seen with his installation. And the pictures are placed at the top of the heap at www.CH701.com (alternate engines)
Any more of these and I'll consider cancelling my upcoming Rotax 912 order ;)

Pat,
With respect, the question came up recently on the Z-list about splitting
and overwhelmingly the consensus was NOT to split the list. Your new list
is, in my opinion, a Very Bad Idea. I don't need nor want yet another place
to have to go to get the valuable input that I need. You are seriously
involved in the Corvair and you have mentioned that you are getting, or may
already have, a 601. The 601/Corvair builders are best served by remaining
on the Matronics list since the majority of the build is the aircraft which
is common to all of us. The specific details of the Corvair installation do
not warrant a split. There is nothing particularly special about the
601/Corvair combination and the Corvaircraft list is already a suitable
resource for those of use putting Corvairs on our planes. Creating another
list does a great disservice to both of the existing lists.
And beside, you've been around long enough to know that it is extremely
impolite to try and duplicate an already successful and well subscribed
list. ;-)

Subject: | Email lists in general (was: New 601XL e-mail list) |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Gary Craze" <garycraze@hotmail.com>
Just have to throw my 2-cents in.
No offense to Matronics, (esp Matt), but after having created and
managed probably a dozen or more email / group lists over the last ten
years, I'll tell you that the "traditional" email list server is fast
going the way of the dodo bird (no, people who still use them aren't
dodos!)
The biggest issues with traditional email lists is that people either A)
don't want the 50+ emails clogging their inbox every day, or B) don't
want to have to sift through a mind-numbing digest dump.
The online, browser-based lists are much less obtrusive and easier to
interact with than traditional email lists for more reasons than I'll go
into here. And most decent online lists (like Yahoo group lists)
archive, have nice search engines, and easy to use online storage as
well for uploading and storing images, documents, etc.
The biggest turnoff for online lists like Yahoo Group lists are the
advertisements you have to sometimes pass through.
The best situation is a managed forum list. These are mostly provided
by some sponsor. In these forums, you can have one broad topic (like
Zenith), with multiple sub-topics (like CH601, CH701, etc) and
everything is nicely organized, fantastically easy to navigate, all in
one convenient location, and you don't have ads. However, somebody has
to pony up for the forum expense, unlike a free, "Yahoo Group" style
list.
All that being said, I most likely won't be switching over from the
Matronics lists to something new anytime soon. The reason? So many
people are already on them that it becomes an exercise in logistics and
politics to move to a new venue. The solution for unclogging the inbox
and not having to deal with the digest? I set up a email rule in my
Outlook program to automatically push anything with Matronics in the
address over to a dedicated email folder where I can sift through later
at my leisure and keep my inbox clean.
As noted at the start of this, I mean no disrespect for Matt and others
who manage lists like these. They are generally thankless jobs, have no
monetary redeeming nature (most lists are done out of the kind pockets
of the list managers themselves), and are an ongoing management
irritation. My comments are just on the nature of group-oriented lists
in general, and how most new lists are being organized.
Best regards,
Gary Craze
