At one time I was considering building the Kitfox 7 since it is capable of
handling the Corvair and other heavier engines like the 0-235. Part of that
solution was to sweep the wings forward I believe 2 degrees. Has anyone
discussed this with the factory or is there some simple reason, besides
having to modify the wing root, it shouldn't be considered on the 701?

My vote along with the majority of other readers who took the time to vote was
to keep this list Zenith oriented and not break it up. I've been a member of
Yahoo for almost as long as it has existed and as far as the groups go, it is
a far cry from Matronics. Impossible to read
archives because of advertisements in between posts, pitiful worthless search engine,
and TONS! of spam if you take individual posts. Also they've been working
on trying to charge for the service! I'm on one of the RV (motor home) lists
and I get on average two spams per one legit post. Try it! you'll quit soon
enough! John Lifer, just my opinion worth what you paid for it!

I depend greatly on the Matronics Zenith list. It's the first email I open in
the mornings.
I love it because you can download the archive to a laptop and use it in the garage.
That way I can look up problems I'm having from there rather than running
into the house and firing up the internet.
This is just not possible through Yahoo.
And I'm not about to run Yahoo down either. I have a couple groups on there myself
and know their abilites pretty well.
Yahoo allows you to store pictures with the newsgroup. Yes, I'm aware this is
available on Matronics, but all groups post to the same folder. (The old Bernie
Gun posts are pretty informative & entertaining as well.)
Yahoo also allows you to save files, something Matronics doesn't do.
My proposal is this; use the strengths of both. Keep Matronics as your main newsgroup
and keep the ability to download the entire archives to a single file.
When you need to post pictures and files, use the the Yahoo newsgroup.
Please decide for yourself, but make an informed decision. Personally, I'll get
my news from Matronics, but check Yahoo for files and pictures.
My 2 cents worth, (actual value may be far less)

Gary, I'll respectfully disagree. It is INFINATELY easier to deal with one digest
email that arrives with no work on your part rather than having to log onto
a web site, wade thru advertisements that popup continually and as far as Yahoo
is concerned, terrible search engines. Web based groups are Cute, and provide
the company providing the service an easy way to get THEIR messages across
to you. BTW, Yahoo is pushing a charge for their group use. Do you want to
HAVE to pay for your message use? Matt does an excellent job with this list and
I'll bet it continue to be the definative list for a long time to come. BTW,
I need to make a contribution!

.... and in other posts I've stated that in my opinion the Corvair is too
heavy for the 701. It's the Gross Weight that bothers me. I actually think
that the 701 will perform very well with the Corvair and I look forward to
seeing real world performance numbers.
The empty weight of a 701 with the Rotax 912 is about 580 lbs, with a
Corvair the empty weight will be in the 630 lb range. That leaves a 470 lb
useful load. Two standard FAA passengers, 350 lbs, fuel 120 lbs and there
goes the useful load. The Kitfox 7 has a 1550 lb gross weight, probably 660
useful with a Corvair, so the heavy engine isn't an issue.
I talk about doing all sorts of weird things to the 701, but Chris Heintz is
significantly more qualified when it comes to aircraft design and
performance. If Chris Heintz were to bump the Gross Weight of the 701 to
1200 lbs, then I would happily put a Corvair on the front. And nothing would
make me happier than to use a Corvair :-)

I am exchanging my Rotax 912 for a Corvair From William Wynne. This
week I have removed my Rotax engine which was last flown last Sunday. The
actual time on the engine is somewhat less because the electric tach runs
anytime the master switch is on and during the last 3 years I have added a
full panel to the plane and had the master on quite a bit during testing as
well as the warm up time to 120 F oil temp. when it isn't working very hard.
$8,350 will buy the whole thing still mounted on the 601 motor mount
from Zenith, the coolant package, the warp drive and spinner, cowling, log
books, owner manuals and operators manual; 1/2 the cost. I am 200 miles
south of Chicago and now have it in a good dry storage here.

I am exchanging my Rotax 912 for a Corvair From William Wynne. This week I
have removed my Rotax engine which was last flown last Sunday. The actual
time on the engine is somewhat less because the electric tach runs anytime
the master switch is on and during the last 3 years I have added a full
panel to the plane and had the master on quite a bit during testing as well
as the warm up time to 120 F oil temp. when it isn't working very hard.

Many apologies to Pat Panzera for my inaccurate previous post. I think my
brain was out on vacation with Matt's firewall yesterday. I cross-linked two
of Pat's prior posts and somehow assumed that the new list was to be
601/Corvair centric - most of you probably saw through this straight away
though.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Williamson Brian - brwill <Brian.Williamson@acxiom.com>
I have a question about riveting metal to fiberglass. I am riveting the
fiberglass tips to the Stabilizer/Elevator and want to know if I need to put
anything on the inside of the fiberglass tip or backside of the rivet? Or
will the rivet hold in fiberglass?

OFF TOPIC - A bit long as well. Sorry, but I thought that this may be
helpful to some listers. ...neil
As a general comment on email lists, many email clients (the program you use
to read emails) have rules engines that can greatly help you zoom in on and
automatically sort specific information. At work I used to get about 1500
emails a week. Without email rules I'd never get any work done.
The rules are usually of the form CONDITION -> ACTION
The trick is to place the rules in the correct order since the rules engine
will stop processing when it has taken an action. Here is an example in a
pseudo style not unlike what you'd use in Lotus Notes:
Rule 1:
From contains "Zenith-List" and (Subject contains "XL"
or Subject contains "601") move to folder local/zenith/601
Rule 2:
From contains "Zenith-List" and (Body contains "XL"
or Body contains "601") move to folder local/zenith/601
Rule 3:
From contains "Zenith-List" and (Subject contains "701"
or Subject contains "801") move to folder local/zenith/stol
Rule 4:
From contains "Zenith-List" and (Body contains "701"
or Body contains "801") move to folder local/zenith/stol
Rule 5:
From contains "Zenith-List" and Body contains "slats"
move to folder local/zenith/stol
Rule 6:
From contains "Zenith-List" move to folder local/zenith/
The above rules are set up from the most specific to the least specific. If
the incoming email cannot be sorted but comes from the Zenith List, it goes
to the folder one level up. When you read it, you can drag it to the correct
folder (or delete it).
You can create, as I have, a subset duplicate of the above rules that deal
with the other matronics lists that you subscribe to. When you aren't
actively following the Aeroelectric list, RV list, Pietenpol list, for
example, you can simply empty the folders or keep the files on your local
hard disk to search through at your leisure.
If anyone wants some more information about setting up rules, I may be able
to help depending on your email client. Contact me off list.

Brian,
I've used pops flush into fiberglass, but would recommend putting a coat of
epoxy
inside if you can't get any aluminum behind. Try a sample joint first to
see what results.

Since the instructions don't mention using anything it will probably be ok
just popping the rivet in there, but I didn't want to trust it. I used some
aluminum backup washers that I bought at Home Depot. You'll find them
around the pop rivet guns.

Subject: | 601XL Fuel Valve and duel control problem |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: JAPhillipsGA@aol.com
Hello thread, doing my last bit of painting on my XL and a problem arose when
I received the upholstered seats back. Background: I installed the ZAC duel
controls option as I was building the fuselage last summer. The location of
the brackets require that the two floor mounted fuel valves be pushed out board
to even get near them. Problem is the standard ZAC provided valve handles are
so far down that with a cushion seat you have to fish under the your left leg
to even get near it on the CIP side and only an NBA center could hope to
reach the passenger side valve. Anybody got a suggestion on how to modify these
valves so a normal guy could reach them? I brought this to Roger and Nick's
attention at ZAC, but as they have not yet even completed a XL with duel
controls themselves they were pretty HO HUM about the problem. Anybody else seen
and
solved this problem ? Bill of Georgia e-mail JAPhillipsGA@aol.com

Bill,
Do away with the two floor mounted fuel valves. It is a Very Bad Idea. One
day you'll end up with them both in the wrong position (Off) at the wrong
time. It just isn't worth the risk. I've struggled hard to refine my fuel
system and one of the first choices was to put a regular selector in a
prominent position. If you are running a standard two tank (one in each
wing) configuration, buy a three-way fuel selector from VANs or Spruce (VANs
prices are good for stuff like this) and put it up on the centre console
under the panel. Alternatively, put it on the side of the centre console
near your right knee. Clearly label it. In your POH add a paragraph similar
to the wording in Supplement 4 of the Piper Cherokee manual about sumping
the gascolator twice (once in each selector position) with sufficient
quantity to ensure that contaminants are removed from the system.
Nick has published some updated fuel diagrams on the Zenith site. Check out
the updated diagram for 6-K-2 (it on the second page of the
fuel-system-2nd-ed.pdf file). I'll email it off-list direct to you because I
can't work out how to find it again on their web site let alone work out how
to describe to you how to find it (can't publish the URL directly because it
is inside the builders resources area of the site). Maybe also ask Nick what
fuel selector they are supplying now with the revised fuel system.

I put a thin washer on the inside to keep the upsetting part of the rivet
from pulling thru the fiberglass. No problem on a wingtip might require tape
on the tail ends.

Subject: | Dual fuel pumps in XL wings |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Joemotis@aol.com
Greetings listers
I am installing a Facet pump in each wing with a check valve for each tank
to be located at the fuel selector valve and gasclator. The single pump that is
in ZAC design is being eliminated. My question is which Facet pump (GPH
wise) should be used with the Jabiru 3300? The plan is to have the option of left
pump, right pump or both pumps.
Read a lot of archives but always interested in the lists feedback.
Thanks

Or junk the fuel selector idea entirely and its simply adding a level of
complexity that is unecessary...If you are putting electric pumps in the
wing roots (and if your using auto fuel I would really REALLY recommend
you do that) then you can simply switch the pumps to switch

Bill,
Do away with the two floor mounted fuel valves. It is a Very Bad Idea.
One day you'll end up with them both in the wrong position (Off) at the
wrong time. It just isn't worth the risk. I've struggled hard to refine
my fuel system and one of the first choices was to put a regular
selector in a prominent position. If you are running a standard two tank
(one in each
wing) configuration, buy a three-way fuel selector from VANs or Spruce
(VANs prices are good for stuff like this) and put it up on the centre
console under the panel. Alternatively, put it on the side of the centre
console near your right knee. Clearly label it. In your POH add a
paragraph similar to the wording in Supplement 4 of the Piper Cherokee
manual about sumping the gascolator twice (once in each selector
position) with sufficient quantity to ensure that contaminants are
removed from the system.
Nick has published some updated fuel diagrams on the Zenith site. Check
out the updated diagram for 6-K-2 (it on the second page of the
fuel-system-2nd-ed.pdf file). I'll email it off-list direct to you
because I can't work out how to find it again on their web site let
alone work out how to describe to you how to find it (can't publish the
URL directly because it is inside the builders resources area of the
site). Maybe also ask Nick what fuel selector they are supplying now
with the revised fuel system.

Hi frank again,
What about the GPH of the Facet pumps?. I am worried about oversupplying the
engine pump and carb.

Hi,
I agree with the idea of placing an aluminum washer on the backside of
the fiberglass when you rivet it. I found aluminum washers at my local
hardware store and they were quite thick and pricey so I went home and
got my hand punch and punched a bunch of rivet size holes in a sheet of
.020 aluminum, then used a larger size die in the hole punch and
centered it on the smaller hole and punched a lot of washers. They are
cheap and lighter than the commercial ones. The punch runs from $15
to $18 at Harbor Freight.

As I recall, you need a pump that will deliver at least three times the
maximum burn rate of the engine. Other than that, GPH isn't the issue, psi
is. When the pressure in the line reaches the a certain value, the facet
pump will stop pumping. You need to select the pump that will deliver fuel
at the pressure that the carb wants to see. Remember that the engine driven
pump will add its pressure to the pressure delivered by the electric pump.
You will probably want to select a facet pump that will deliver a bit over
the minimum pressure the carb needs and make sure the additional pressure
from the engine driven pump wont exceed the maximum pressure the carb wants.
