Mornin 701 builders,
Got the skins cleco'ed now, but worried about getting the trailing edge perfectly
straight, does anyone have advise on how to do this right the first time?
Drilling out solid rivets is not my idea of fun!
I thought about clamping on 2 wooden beams, but then how do you set the rivets?
The book says set with rivet sqeezer, but i dont want to chance this, just now
its out when I'm finished?
Thanks,
Dirk.
701 # 5228 Kit.

Subject: | 2004 List of Contributors - A Special Thank You... |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
First let me say Thank You to everyone that made a Contribution in support
of the Lists this year! I was particularly touched by all of the wonderful
comments people made regarding the Lists and how much they mean to
them. As I have said many times before, running these Lists and creating
the many new features is truly a labor of love. This is why your comments
of support and appreciation have particular meaning for me. Your
generosity during this time of List support only underscores the delightful
sentiments people have made regarding the Lists.
I would also once again like to thank Andy Gold of the Builder's Bookstore
( http://www.buildersbooks.com ) who so generously supported this year's
Fund Raiser with both free and substantially discounted merchandise!! Andy
is truly one of a kind, and a superb businessman, and I cannot thank him
enough for all that he's done! If you have any aircraft media needs in the
near future, I would ask that you please give his great web site a
look. Thanks again Andy, for all your support!
And I would also like to thank Paul Besing of Aeroware Enterprises
(www.kitlog.com) who has generously contributed free registered copies of
his great Windows Kit Logging software called Kitlog Pro in support of this
year's List Fund Raiser! Thank you, Paul! For those of you that selected
this sweet gift, you should be receiving your Registration Key directly
from Paul in the next week or so.
And finally, below you will find the 2004 List of Contributors current as
of 12/5/04! Have a look at the list of names there as these are the people
that make all of these List services possible! I can't thank you all
enough for your support and great feedback during this year's Fund
Raiser! THANK YOU!
There are still a few of the various Free Gifts left, so please feel free
to yet make your Contribution and get a great Free Gift to-boot! Once
again, the URL for the Contributions web site is:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
I will be shipping out all of the gifts in the next few weeks. I hope to
have everything shipping out by the end of the month. Generally everything
will go out via USPS, so be nice to your postman this month, he might be
bringing you something fun!
Once again, thank you for making this year's List Fund Raiser successful!
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

Why would you need this? I suspect that many aircraft will NOT trim out to
straight and level flight with full flaps. Full flaps are not intended for
straight and level flight.
Does it trim to minimum approach speed on a reasonable descent to the
runway? Unless I'm missing something I can't see the need...
Having said that -- can you give more authority in the desired direction by
taking some from the other end? I.e. the aircraft doesn't need to be
trimmable above max. cruise speed. If there's still more trim available on
that end, consider adjusting the neutral point towards 'nose up'? fwiw

Hi Dirk:
I placed a piece of good straight wood the length of the wing, 2x2 or
2x4, and clamped it all down to my work bench being careful that the
upper skin laid flat. Then I drilled for rivet locations through into
the wood. I started in the center and worked out each way , one right
and one left, picking about every third or fourth location first.
Drilled the hole and inserted a clecco right into the wood which clamps
it all to the wood. The skins lay absolutely flat and without a bulge
between. Then progressively drill and clecco for the balance of the
rivets. Next, remove the cleccos to remove the wood and re-clecco . It
should still remain dead flat and straight without the wood support.
Proceed with the squeezed rivets. Mine came out eyeball straight and
true which is as good as I need for my 701.

Dirk,
Assuming your talking about the wings. Clamp the trailing edge together
with a piece of wood (1x3) on the under side making sure it's flat to the
angled edge of the skin. This will help keep it ridged. You want to make
sure the trailing edge is flat. Place a straight edge along the top side at
the trailing edge to be sure it is flat, not that the edge is flush, but the
top is flat all the way along & reclamp. Don't try to bend the trailing
edge up or down to make it flush. Any areas that are uneven can be filed
flush later. Then, you can start drilling the pilot holes right into the
wood & cleco through the skins into the wood. After it's riveted you can
file the trailing edges flush.

Thanks for describing how the mechanical fuel pump works, it is helpful to
know that it doesn't add to pressure it receives.
If fuel from the aux pump goes into the mechanical pump, what keeps a
failure of the mechanical pump from blocking fuel to the carby?

Yup thats pretty much it Joe.
What I did was to put the gasolator just in front of the spar on the
floor (between the rudder cables) and use that as the tee..(drains thru
the floor).
The chck valves go befor the gascolator and the pumps go in the wing
root at the discharge of the tank. I also put a filter on the DISCHARGe
of each pump.
Junk the engine driven pump, that just encourages vapour lock and over
pressurises the carbs.....This is what I have been flying with for 350
hours now.

Hi Frank
And just replace the fuel selector with an open shut valve with the
check
valves Teed in right before it?

Thank you for your reply Grant, I am sorry but I misled you, I do not mean level
flight but on the approach, my elevator trim tab has a full travel of 57 degrees
- 22 up and 35 down so there is really no further down travel available.(Nose
up)
The pressure required to keep on the glide path is not great but most aircraft
I have flown can be trimmed on the approach with full flap.
The PFA who issue (hopefully!) my permit to fly feel this is not as it should be.
Cheers,
Norman

At first my 601 XL wouldn't trim out even with no flaps. The first thing I
did was to duct tape an extension on the trim tab to see what it would take
to trim it out. With the tab nearly doubled in size it would trim out but it
still took most of the trim travel. This was at a forward CG. After this I
raised the rear of the horizontal stabilizer half an inch by replacing the
rear attach brackets. Now, with the original trim tab, I can trim it out for
zero flaps throughout the CG range and with up to about 10 degrees of flaps
at aft CG. I still can't trim it out at full flaps. I may rivet a sheet of
aluminum to the trim tab to extend it beyond the trailing edge in the future
if the problem irritates me enough. It would be nice to not have to hold a
lot of aft stick force on final approach to a short runway, it would reduce
the workload during a critical time. I don't really need the flaps most of
the time, I can usually get it down and stopped in about 500 feet without
them.

If you want to fly as slow as possible without pointing the nose at the sky
for aerial photography, sight seeing or maybe a search mission, it would be
nice to have that ability. Although a high wing plane would be better suited
for these missions. I know every Cessna I've ever flown can be trimmed out
at full flaps right down to near stall speed.
Perhaps the British rules require it.

Jeff,
The Dynon D-10 has a built in altitude encoder and outputs this in standard
gray code
used by most transponders(11 wires).
The new Dynon D-10A also has a built in altitude encoder but it is a serial
output only
(1 wire). You would need a newer transponder such as the Garmin GTX327 to
use the
encoder.
If you have your transponder already hooked up to a separate encoder you can
just leave it like that and install your dynon.
The dynon will not use your existing encoder for anything and does not need
an external encoder for any of its functions.
The dynon has an encoder built in it for its own use and for output to your
transponder.
If you have the newer dynon D10A and an older transponder you wouldn't be
able to use the dynon encoder for that transponder anyway.
If the transponder and the dynon are compatable you could wire your dynon <br
>encoder output to the transponder and sell your existing encoder.
Using the soft keys on the dynon, you can set the barometric pressure
manually.
Hope this helps.

Yes. The Dynon includes an encoder that you can hook up to the transponder but
since you already have an encoder you don't need that function. This will simplify
your wiring harness. The Dynon does have barometric adjustment for the altimeter.

Hello folks: How is your weight and balance working out on the XL's? I got a ameri-
king 450 elt ( a fairly heavy unit with the D cell's) and would like to
put it in the tail if it won't sent the CG to far aft. I am a little worried about
the jabiru engine being a little light for the design of the airframe. I
do have an oddsey battery on the firewall. As always, I appreciate you input.

Never, never, never junk the mechanical pump on a Jabiru!!!! The info below
came from someone who has little knowledge of Jabiru engines, in fact he thinks
they're tested below sea level. The spring in the Jabiru mechanical pump is
customized for the engine. You can pump through it if it fails, just ask USJabiru
or Andy at SunCoast. A Jab is not like a Subaru/Stratus, which does not
come with a fuel pump. I'll resist the urge to say more but add that the US
factory distributors know more about their products than do the various opinions
on an e-mail builders list. Ask the people who know.

My applogies but I did not see the engine was a Jab. The Rotax and the
Stratus use the same bing carb which can be a problem when you have two
pumps in series (low wing pump and the engine pump) because the pressure
can overcome the float needle. So to junk the engine driven pump on a
Rotax is perfectly OK...becuse it has Bing carbs.
The problem with an engine driven pump is that it is prone to heating
and if it is used on a low wing plane with auto fuel with no low point
pump it is a prime candidate for vapour lock.
If your engine has some other form of fuel metering that is fuel
pressure dependant (MOST carbs do not care what the pressure is as long
as it does not overcome the float needle) then of course you need some
way to accuratly deliver that pressure.
My point was intended to demonstrate that a engine driven pump only is a
poor way to do it.
Frank
