Very sad reminder of the dangers of wake turbulence, and that bad can things happen even to good pilots. The good news is the pilot survived and is another testament to the safe design of the Zodiac. Now you can have a complete list of all hardware that comes with the Kit. Just visit the Builders Resources pages of www.ch601.org I'm still working on the list for the HD/HDS. Subject: Re: brokerage fees / Canada
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Lincoln Probst <elprobst@yahoo.com> Amen -- the fees are killing me too. Here is my story just FYI for others shipping to Canada and to help set expectations in dealing with the shipping company. I got the tail kit shipped separately, Reimer(roadway express's Canadian shipping company) got it and in a frustrating comedy of errors they proceeded to tell me: 1) It was "all paid for to ship to my door" just need to clear with customs. 2) I'll get it the next day once it is cleared through customs. 3) We don't know how much to charge you for shipping yet so can't deliver it. 4) Shipping is $154 and we'll ship it tomorrow. 5) Shipping is $157 and can't be sent before next Wednesday. 6) We charge $77 to ship it to a residence. Or you can pick it up if you want for no extra charge. 6) There is no way we can ship it prior to next Thursday. By number 5 I was rather peeved and proceeded to describe their incompetence to which she just replied (3 or 4 times) "We charge $77 to ship it to a residence. or you can pick it up yourself." Apparently you can clear it with customs yourself too, I chose to hire "Tudor" a company that will clear it for you-- they were really great... I have the special circumstances of being an american living in Toronto on the Tourist visa as my residency application is being processed, so I don't have a Social Insurance Number. It looked like I may not be able to receive anything, but Tudor gave me some internal phone number to a quite competent customs agent who created an "importer number" for me... from then on it was a piece of cake. There also may be a way to avoid PST on the shipment, although I think I had to pay both PST and GST (15%) and a brokerage fee of $100. I think previous people on this list had other shipping issues, in particular with receiving the big box with wings/fuselage where Reimer/Roadway Express couldn't get it off the truck. The solution was to hire moving people to move it from the warehouse to home. So I'm anticipating doing that with the next box. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bima, Martin" <mbima@hydro.mb.ca> PAY TAXES ... DO NOT PAY BROKERAGE!!!! No, they are not the same. Do you have to pay taxes? YES - We all need roads and hospitals and advertising firms. You have to pay either when you receive the material or at the end of your build, because your DAR will want to see receipts for all those goodies and shiny metal. You will have to pay now or later. I suggest pay now, because who wants a huge tax bill before you fly, right? (although not aviation related - we still want to build airplanes in the most economical fashion) Do you have to pay Brokerage? NO NO NO. Brokerage is the service provided by a third party to do all of the paperwork (and its not much) to work out the taxes and duty ($0 for "made in USA" material). If UPS shows up at your door with your package, they will charge you brokerage. The two ways to reduce/avoid this is 1 - Use Post. GOOD - They charge $5 through a local broker. BAD - No tracking and could be slow. 2 - (What I do) - Ship UPS, and as soon as you see that the package has a tracking number, phone UPS and tell them it is a "CLEARS OWN CUSTOMS" package. They will call you when it gets into town. You drive the UPS place, pick up a slip, drive to customs, let the friendly and courteous agent fill out all of the paperwork (one sheet), then you pay the taxes and they give you another slip that you take back to UPS to release your package. In my case, Customs and UPS are 2 minutes from each other by car. Other situations may vary. I had paid more than $200 in brokerage in the last 4 years before figuring out the UPS is not the only broker in town. Martin

Subject: Skyshop-- firewall forward kit for ch 701
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Skyshop" <Danny@skyshops.org> Brian, You made good observations on the differences between Skyshop's and Zenair's 701 firewall forward package. The only clarification would be to mention that our cowling is completely redesigned for streamline and cooling efficiency. This in combination with our NACA scoop/airbox, Woodcomp carbon fiber prop, and customized plenum account for the majority of our performance gains. (The plenum cannot be used as supplied from Rotax, it requires modifications, welding and reshaping.) The different in the prices of the kits besides the prop is primarily because of the Rotax airbox which lists for $675 approximately. Last comment: Although we don't sell just parts from our kit we do support everything we sell as far as replacement parts go. Just remember we are only a small company trying to better support the Zenair community and it's very difficult for us to sell all of the small individual parts separately with limited resources. As I remember in a recent issue of Kitplanes where Chris Heinz was interviewed, the Gemini project is stalled (indefinitely?) for lack of a full-feathering propeller for use on the Jabaru engine. The drag from a stationary propeller in single-engine flight makes the plane a slug. Don't expect the Gemini to become reality anytime soon. I assume they do the 601 kits the same way, and would be willing to provide the electronic list to any kit builder. I imported the excel data into microsoft Access and used it to do inventory and part location control for my kit during building. Using it, I was able to print out a list of parts needed for a particular assembly, along with the box it was in, and the shelf I had it stored on. Sure, the nosewheel steered, but not anywhere as tight a turn as I could get with differential braking. That one shortcoming was a major factor in my saying NO to that airplane. The Cessna 172 I fly now has toe brakes (of course) and steerable nosewheel and I find myself with differential braking all the time; the turning radius is very large without it. You may want to reconsider. Just my 2 cents worth, YMMV. Saludos Gary Gower landing in a 20 ft wide strip (better with a 90 degree 40 mph crosswind) :-) :-) roy vickski <rvickski@yahoo.com> wrote: --> Zenith-List message posted by: roy vickski Paul, I am using a single master cylinder from a 96 geo metro, mounted on outside firewall. This is possible because my 701 is a nose dragger and steers with the front wheel. Tail draggers need differential braking but nose draggers don,t. Possible food for thought. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mike" <wizard-24@juno.com> I bought (from JC Whitney, I think) one of those portable power supply things that are used to charge batteries and provide power to portable devices. You plug it in the wall, and there are several different DC voltage "outs" (including 12V) which you can use to power almost anything, including the electrical system on your plane. Plus, they're not very expensive. Really comes in handy. Mike Fortunato 601XL Juno Gift Certificates Give the gift of Internet access this holiday season. http://www.juno.com/give
