--> Zenith-List message posted by: Howard Carter <howado@cwia.com> Bob, the AN3 bolt has a 10-32 thread. The torque limit depends on the type of nut used with the bolt. When using the Nylol 10-32 nuts, the prevailing (minimum) torque must be at least 8-inch-lbs. However, the maximum torque to use depends on whether or not the application puts the bolt in tension or shear. The values in Table 1 should be followed . Inch-poulnds is correct for the small bolts. Special steel bolts for propeller attachment will be spec'd in ft-lb. For engine bolts follow the manufacturer's values. A lot of the AN and NAS designations appear to have been supeceded by MS numbers. I find the people at Genuine Aircraft Hardware Co. (888-247-2738) very helpful in sorting out the equivalent numbers. Quite a few of the hardware numbers on the ZAC drawings have been superceded, by the way. Hope this helps. The table provides torques for thread sizes 7/16 -20, 1/2-20, 9/16-20 etc for "Fine Thread Series", and 7/16-14, 1/2-13, 9/16-12 etc for "Coarse Thread Series", but I don't think any of these would be AN-3 bolts. I've looked through the Spruce catalog for hints as to which thread size would be the AN3, but am coming up at a loss. It seems like it must be obvious somehow, but I can't find it. (Incidentally, these torques for the Fine and Coarse Thread Series are given in "INCH-POUNDS" instead of foot-pounds, which I assume is a typo error---what do you think?) > >Soooo, anybody know what is the proper torque for a self-locking nylon-insert nut for an AN3 bolt? > >Thanks, >Bob > > >__________ NOD32 1.961 (20041230) Information __________ > >This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system. >http://www.nod32.com > > > >

    Subject: RE: CH601 HDS POH
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Phil Raker <phadr1@yahoo.com> Jeff, I believe the answer to your question is yes and no. Yes, there is at least one HDS POH out there. George Pinneo, who used to post on this list quite often, has written one which is posted on the ZAC site at: www.zenithair.com/bldr/bldrinfo/gp-n44pz.htm This could at least serve as a good starting place for writing your own. No, I don't believe there is one with the kind of graphs, charts, diagrams, etc. which are common in the POHs of factory-built planes. They put lots of fancy stuff in the books to hide the fact that they're building brand new 40+ year old airplanes. I don't believe the FARs require that the POH take any particular form, just that there be one. If all the information necessary to fly the plane safely can be put into words, the graphs & charts would be redundant. (Do you really need a chart to figure out whether the W&B is within the limits?) Take a look at George's. It may not be the way I'd write the handbook, but it certainly is a good starting place. The unit comes with the associated bolts and nuts needed for assembly. Since I do not have the facilities to bend this size metal, it was well worth the 40 bucks. George May 601XL

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Aaron" <agustafson@chartermi.net> Flying 601 tail dragger pilots On landing roll out while braking, is it necessary to be manipulating the rudder pedals in addition to the brake pedals in order to maintain straight fast taxi? The reason I ask is that I am in the process of building the brake pedals and would like to get the most efficient braking possible. My calculations indicate that I need at least 4:1 mechanical advantage in order to get 500 PSI w/o stretching the air frame. So I need to decide the proper relation between the pedals. My goal is to modify or not use the normal 'toe brakes on the rudder pedals' as it seams that this is where lots of people are having problems getting sufficient brake authority. I have gained much knowledge on this list from other people's experience and thank you all! Happy new year Aaron DO NOT ARCHIVE

Subject: Re: 601XL Nose Fork Doubler
--> Zenith-List message posted by: JAPhillipsGA@aol.com Dear Thread, on the fork doubler. I already have the brackets for the wheel pants fitted and riveted on the old fork. I received my doubler and it extends below and onto the brackets. Fitting that bracket and the pants just right was a real bugger so I call Roger at ZAC to find out where the cracks had appeared that required the doubler in the first place. Roger said the cracks were all up around the six bolt area and that if I needed to trim half inch or so off the bottom of the doubler so that it did not interfere with the pants brackets there should not be any problem. For you fellows that haven't mounted the bracket this it is not a problem. Another word on the wheel pants. Before putting the main gear axles on and setting the fuselage on the wheels, have the two holes in the end of the axles that hold the wheel pants brackets for the mains drilled and tapped for threads. I didn't and I lost a couple days disassembling, take to machine shop and reassembly because I didn't look ahead. Happy New Year!!!!!, Bill of Georgia

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Johann G." <johann@gi.is> Hello all you great list members. I wish you all a very Happy New Flying Year. I hope this year will be as good or better for you than the past building and flying year. I am looking forward to fly my five year old project this fall or summer. Something big and major unforeseen can only change that plan. It looks like all the metal and gathered material for the past five years will become an airplane and finally become something very joyful for the owner, who has been dreaming of this moment since the year 1999. I know this is a slow process, which could have been finished in a shorter time, but in my case was only considered as a hobby ( my wife speaking). If it was up to me, one year would have been the correct estimate, but who am I kidding. I would like to use this time to thank all of you who have been a great help in the building process, always ready to share your expertise and building experience when you have been asked, which just shows what kind of nice people we have on this list. For someone like me, all alone up here in a deserted island, trying to cope by my self, this project would have been an impossible task. I thank you all for your help and am glad I have found this great companionship in the list Matt has made possible with his priceless effort. Best wishes from Iceland. Johann G.

It seems like the stick has limited throw laterally, moving from vertical only about 3 1/2 inches to one side and about 5 inches to the other, measured at the fork of the 'Y'. Can any one with a finished product (or close to it) tell me how much control stick throw is needed side to side to give the necessary flaperon deflection? I know I could calculate this, theoretically. But I hope this might be easier, given all the knowledgeable people out there. Many thanks, Jim Greenough Portland, OR
