Zenith uses wheels from an Italian motor scooter for the 601.
Being cheap I used wheelbarrow wheels upgraded with heavy duty bearings.
After 24 hours of flying the heavy duty bearings are worn out.
Being still cheap (poor) I am wondering if anybody knows which scooter they
get their wheels from?
Any ideas?

I dunno about any Italian motorscooter, but the wheels on MY 601HD areMatco
W80CC-Z mains and NW80CC-Z nosewheel. These are standard Matco parts that
are modified to fit the Zeniths... hence the "-Z" in the part number.

I've started a new aircraft homebuilding forum at http://www.WingsForum.com
"They" say that a picture is worth a thousand words. The ability to attach
spreadsheets, documents, and CAD files can speak volumes.
I am not asking anyone to leave this list. I'm just offering an additional
resource that will offer easily accessible photo and data file content
intergraded with the message threads. http://www.wingsforum.com also has
form-based email and private messaging that will allow for nonpublic
communications while protecting your email address from SPAM email
harvesters.
http://www.WingsForum.com was created because the email-based groups just
can't compete with the forum format for organization of topics, searching
information already covered by a group, and relevancy of information
presented. I can't tell you how many HOURS of my life have been wasted
scrolling through off topic threads and information irrelevant to my search
on Yahoo and MSN groups. Lets face it, if you are looking for info on your
spar why should you need to scroll through 30 email post on firewalls 5
about rudders and 2 about nothing at all?
At http://www.WingsForum.com you will find topics well organized, pictures
and relevant files directly attached to their post, private messaging, and
more all on one site. Forum membership is, and will always be, FREE. Try
in out, it cost nothing, and you just might like it. If you don't like it
just let me know how I can improve the site.
Email Digest are available for those who prefer them. You can customize
them for what forums you want to watch, if you want a short excerpt or full
messages of up to 36,000 characters, and what time of day they will be
delivered to you. Users just click the Digest link at the top of the page
once logged in to enable them.
Thanks for your consideration,

Dan,
Matco wheels are Zenith's standard, but the tires that fit
the Matco can optionally be a motor scooter type, one I've used
is a Michelen S-83. The wheel bearings you had were probably
not rated for the landings you've encountered. I think it's
less expensive to use the Matcos or an equal made for the
purpose rather than risk encountering a seized brg on landing.

Jim,
Measuring from the point where the notch of the two "Y's" are welded to the
stick I get about 3 inches on each side from center. In flight I hardly
move the stick at all for roll inputs. With the amount of deflection you
are getting, you should get the flapperon deflection called out in the
plans. My roll stops were set to give the proper flapperon deflections and
thus set the amount the stick moves.

Could DO NOT ARCHIVE at least be put on all this non aviation nonsense we've had
over the past weeks. Not much wonder that other zenith-forum startups appear
when you have to wade through all the excess.
One of the great gifts of this list is that somewhere in your building experience
you will bond with someone in the same stage of building and with the same
questions that you have. Those personal e-mails can make for lifelong friendships.
Many of you can nod your head to that.

Subject: | Finally got my 601 HDS! |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeffrey Glasserow" <jeffglass@starband.net>
A Happy New Year to all! May your planes fly straight, and the same for your
rivet lines!
I've been posting to the list for quite some time now asking lots of
questions and getting really good answers and suggestions. I'd like to
thank all of you, and by that I mean all of the list members, for your
interest. If it hadn't been for the list I don't think I would have gone
through with this purchase because of support issues that I read about with
some other plane manufacturers and spotty builder support.
So , here goes my saga: I finally closed on a rather well used 601 HDS last
week after a lengthly negotiation. It was built in 1999 and flew off its
restrictions in early 2002. The plane has 270 TT and the engine was O timed
(O-235 L2C) in 1997. The engine logbook is also showing 270 hours. The prop
is a WarpDrive ground adjustable 3 blade. The plane is well equipped
radiowise with a Garmin 250XL GPS/ NAV/COM, a Terra 250 Transponder and a
Terra encoding altimeter. It also has a full vacuum system with
backup.(Both leak, how's that for starters?) However, the former owner did
NO maintance on the plane and it needs new nose gear bungees, and the main
gear struts have to be dropped and de-corrosioned. At the same time I'll
replace the main bungees since they're gonna be off. I'm thinking of
replacing the 2 1080HD bungees with one 1280 HD on each side so as to make
the main gear less stiff. Any thoughts or comments?
I also need to check with the factory to see if the wing spar plate AD has
been complied with. The left side steering rod is bent and needs to be
replaced (I'm going to add stiffener sleeves to both steering rods) and
there are lots of other little things that need attention. The brake
cylinders are going to come off and go back to Matco to have the intensifier
kits installed, the throttles creep at low throttle and the co-pilot side is
sticky. The fuel boost pumps need to be checked to make sure they are
pumping properly and one of the under wing gascolators needs to be replaced.
Cabin heat works but there's only one duct on the co-pilots side. Therefore
we've got to re-do the hoses and add a splitter to vent some heat into the
pilot side footwell. It will also help to install steering rod boots to
seal up the firewall. The prop blades are going back to WarpDrive to have
the nickle plate installed on the leading edges and at the same time I'd
like to install a 12" spinner. Can anyone direct me to the Great Planes web
site? I understand they have a 12" spinner kit. WarpDrive only offers a
10". I've also got to lower the seat height at least 2" and I think that's
going to be a major project unto itself. I'm open to any suggestions for
improvements at this point so please let me know your thoughts. BTW I'm
located in West Central New Jersey and fly out of Alexandria Field, N85, if
anyone is building locally, or is close enough or interested in flying in
for a chat. I'll trade rides in your 601 for rides in my Cub!

Sean, hasn't this forum been around awhile? A few months back someone
mentioned it, I went there, tried to sign up, it wouldn't let me for some
reason, I really don't remember, so I haven't been back until tonight.
I used to use the rotorcraft forum before I got out of the rotorcraft
business and for the most part I really liked it.
I like that type of forum better than this one for mostly the reasons you
mentioned, especially the pictures within a post.
What I didn't like about the RotorCraft forum was that were was a lot of
worthless back and forth bickering which served no purpose. It even got to
the point of name calling. And, the bashing or flaming of newbees who asked
newbee type questions was certainly uncalled for. I used to get private
e-mail from persons who would ask me for advise or information all the time,
and the one thing most of them always said was that they didn't want to post
to the forum and have to put up with the bashing or flaming they had seem
happen to others. Many many people would watch the forum but would not
participate, because of the above. The people on this list do not seem to
be of that mentality.
I'm not doing a good job of expressing exactly what I mean, but it all boils
down to proper administration of this list or any forum. If you or who ever
is administrating the WingsForum is not willing to police it then it will
turn into one as I have described above. You have got to be willing to
commit the time, you just can't start it and let it go.
As far as this list is concerned, I use a free little program called
MailWasher that lets me look at all of my e-mails at the internet service
providers server before I download them to my computer. If I am not
interested in a subject, I just check the delete box and I goes away. That
saves me a lot of time.
Anyway, thanks for starting the forum, I'm going to join it, but I still
will stay with this one.

How many rough landings did you experience while flight testing this new acquisition?
My read on the dual bungees is redundancy - the main gear is the most stressed
on all but the worst of landings - ergo, use two so that if one should fail, yada,
yada, yada. BTW, 601s plant themselves upon landing; it might be all but
impossible to make one porpoise.
How about two 1080s? Check with Nick at Mexico.

Jeff,
If you contact Matco directly, they have drawings on the modifications
to the Zenith 601 HD/HDS brake pedal assembly. If they are no longer
available directly from Matco, let me know and I'll dig them out for you.
Matco had a great display on this issue at Airventure 2003 or was it 2002?
