--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Cdngoose" <601xl@sympatico.ca> Ron there are some plans for Brakes in the Builders Resources section of www.ch601.org but ideally you may wish to have a chat with Larry Mcfarland. I have a set of plans for his 8 ft brake and I'm very impressed! As soon as I'm done building my Zodiac I will be building Larry's brake. Ever wonder why people say I sometimes do things backwards? --> Zenith-List message posted by: "cgalley" <cgalley@qcbc.org> You need to go to Mac's Machine & Design This site contains a 4 year record and several hundred pages of journal in 7 segments that describe the methods I've used to scratch-build the 601HDS from plans-only. www.macsmachine.com - This is Larry McFarland's great blog on building a 601 complete with pictures. He has a set of plans for $35 but he refunds the money after you send a photo of your completed 8' brake. It does involve some welding put it is a professional type bending brake when completed as machine design was Larry's "real" job. He has a 3-part, 49-page manual. It consists of drawings, photos, bill-of-material, process-methods and sequence that simply describes the project from start to finish. --> Zenith-List message posted by: N5SL <nfivesl@yahoo.com> Hi Ron: I purchased Larry's 8' brake plans and constructed the brake two summers ago. Larry's plans are excellent. It's a challenging but rewarding job to build it. If you would like to see some of the steps required to build the brake, go to my website here: http://www.cooknwithgas.com/Brake.html I believe Larry's website has information on the plans. I've used it for over a year and I'm happy with the performance. --> Zenith-List message posted by: JAPhillipsGA@aol.com Ron, I, as a insane tool junkie would never attempt to dissuade anyone from getting more tools, bigger tools and more obscure tools, but I have an option you might consider. I needed a bunch of "L" angle broke and some custom pieces bent as well. I also had several large scrape pieces of .19 and .25 gage sheet. What I did was find a friendly gutter man to cut them on his 10 foot cutter and break the slices on his 10 foot break. Made enough L for two XLs. He wanted to do it for free, but I "forced" $25.00 on him for beer money. That was a ton cheaper than even a poor quality cutter and break. Course, you may really "need" these tools. If so, I would suggest you contact your local gutter installer(s) and they will know all the dealers, and maybe where you could find a used one. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

I even went as far as buying one thinking I could incorporate the 1/8 radius but gave up and made the 4 footer while borrowing a friends 8 ft brake. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "kevinbonds" <kevinbonds@comcast.net> Don't know if this is obvious to everyone else but me before it was suggested to me, but if you get a piece of scrap large gage tin as long as your brake and bend it around the blunt nose you can bend your aluminum around it (the tin). You should be able to mesure the outside of the tin after it is bent and if it is the correct thickness it will give you a 1/8 inch bend once you bend the aluminum around it. you just place this peice in the brake with your aluminum under it and bend around. You do have to adjust the brake to allow for the additional thickness of the heavy gage tin. I have a couple of peices that I use whenever I use somone's brake. Works very well. I have read about guys radiusing there own brakes but this seems more difficult and less reversable. I may build Lary's break myself and semi-permanently attach this type of radius mod to it so that I will have the option to remove it if I want to use it for other things.
