Hi group! Here is a different message...
As some of you know, when I made my control stick, I
made it "modular" so I could eventually replace the Y
stick with a straight one. The idea was that I would
keep the Y for the training on my 601 and then replace
it with a more sporty and less cumbersome control
stick.
Well, I now have 58 hours on my plane and Saturday, I
took a 240lb passenger with me. Even with him, I
found that the stick does not cause any problem (I
just told him to leave me more room on take off and
landing).
On the other hand, the Y control stick is very
comfortable. It is a natural position for the grip
and during level flight, I often just rest my wrist at
the bottom of the Y.
So... it seems I made it modular for nothing and I'll
keep it like this!
Michel

You can Rent light weight brakes from Home depot? Correct me if I am wrong but the Home Depot Brake refers to plans to make a simple (read cheap) brake from materials all purchased at home depot. Plans are on www.ch601.org
Al Etherington built one as did Muray Johnson (the designer) and they work well
for short bends. For longer bends...well...you best talk to Al Etherington.
I think he did his tail feather skins and flap/aileron skins on the home depot
brake so check with him. IMHO it wouldn't be suitable for a wing skin.

Congrats Ron!!!
Good post, good numbers, great speeds! I might have to build some HDS outter
wing panels and see what N601ZR will do with the shorter, sknnier, lighter
wings.
I'd love to see the videos too. I have broadband, so I could put them on the
web for everyone else to take a look at... we all like that sort of thing :)

If you are willing to drive a bit and pay for the ride, try
www.LAsportplanes.com
They have a 701 at El Monte. They also have an AMD Alarus, which seems to
me would be a good sub for the 601. I plan to go get some time in the
Alarus, if my insurance okays it. Not quite ready yet, though.

Yes. I am working there part time now while I'm in school. And I just
checked yesterday on this. There is a very long (@12 foot I believe) bending
brake for rent at my store. It is one of those HVAC types that has the
limited throat depth. If you had an adapter for it to allow for 1/8 inch
bends ( I wrote about this before) this would probably work for the XL wing
spar doublers and Z channels.??

Hi, I have a true airspeed indicator and don't have the instruction for. My question
is how do you use it? You're suppose to set the temperature at the altitude
you will be flying but there are 2 different scale on the top of the indicator???
thanks

Hi listers,
I was overwhelmed by the interest and good wishes I received after
posting a report of my first flight. I think I got 14 requests for the
video. Well--- I'm so sorry to say that I've been trying to get it
into the computer for 3 or 4 hours and it looks like it ain't going to
happen. I'm as anxious as y'all but my mail program cut it into 46
separate files and did a paper shredder number on them. I've spent more
time messing with the computer than I did on my first flight.! I will
take my own camera next time and it will interface right into the computer.
On the bright side tho, Scott Laughlin (http://www.cooknwithgas.com/)
has kindly offered to post the next video on his website. It's such a
great site that you will already be watching his progress there. I
promise to get some shots of it soon. Weather here in Georgia is
really bad now with gusts to 35 mph and temp about 35 degrees, so it
will take a day or two.
Again thanks so much for the mail and kind words. The list has really
been a tangible community of knowledge and positive energy.

Fellow XL builders,
I'm to the point where I have to drill the 1" hole for the Flap Control
Tubes. The builders guide states: "Use the Wing Jig 6B-13 to locate the
center of the Piano Hinge" I just wanted to make sure I'm understanding
this. Is it as simple as matching up the C channel of the jig with the rear
spar on the wing and then attaching a piece of pin that is in line with the
flap hinge pin? If I'm missing something here please let me know. The last
thing I want to do is drill this thing in the wrong place and have it bind
or not work at all.
The next question is how did you place the Flap Control Bearings?
Any pictures of the procedure will be greatly appreciated!
As usual thanks for any help or advice.

True Airspeed is equivalent airspeed corrected for temperature and pressure
altitude. At speeds below 200 knots, true airspeed can be found by
correcting calibrated airspeed for temperature and pressure altitude. A
rule of thumb is: True airspeed is 2% more than calibrated airspeed per
1,000 feet altitude above sea level.
If a true airspeed indicator is installed, it is equipped with a rotatable
ring which works in conjunction with the airspeed indicator dial in a
manner similar to the operation of a flight computer. To operate the
indicator, first rotate the ring until pressure altitude is aligned with
outside air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. Pressure altitude should not
be confused with indicated altitude. To obtain pressure altitude,
momentarily set the barometric scale on the altimeter to 29.92 and read
pressure altitude on the altimeter. Be sure to return the altimeter baromet
ric scale to the original barometric setting after pressure altitude has
been obtained. Having set the ring to correct for altitude and temperature,
read the true airspeed shown on the rotatable ring by the indicator
pointer. For best accuracy, the indicated airspeed should be corrected to
calibrated airspeed by referring to the Airspeed Calibration chart in
Section 5. Knowing the calibrated airspeed, read true airspeed on the ring
opposite the calibrated airspeed.

Mark: I would wait until you mount the wings to drill the hole. I thought I did
it according to the instructions and I had to oblong the hole in the sideskin.
If the center of the hole is not perfectly on the pin the flap will bind. If
I would have mounted the wings and clecoed the flaps in place the hole would
have been easy. By the way, I suspect that you can place the arm of the flap tube
through the hole from the inside so a 1" hole may work but it seemed easier
to me just to slide it in from the outside so I ended up with a 1 1/4" hole
( before I had to oblong it) to clear the collars on the tube. I spent a lot of
time getting the flaps to operate smoothly . Also, don't drill the bearings
until you get a pilot hole in the sideskin or they may not line up either! I
had to remake the bearings twice ( I could have shimmed them but I didn't). Looking
back if I would have drilled the pilot hole in the sideskin, then placed
the bearing tight on the inside of the sideskin, dri
lled a
pilot hole thru the bearing, everything would have lined up. I cut the hole in
the center of the bearing according to the plan and the hole was off by a lot.

Yes, the center of the flap hinge pin has to intersect the center of the
flap torque tube where it exits the fuselage so that they both rotate around
the same point,

The distance from the center of the hole in the bearing to the center of the
hinge pin must be the same as the distance from the center of the flap
torque tube to the center of the flap crank pin on each end of the tube.

I thought you were talking about the bearings in the ends of the flaps for
the crank pins. If you were referring to the bearings on the flap torque
tube then ignore this answer.
