Gary, that's exactly why I asked the question: in the car the "stick" is in front
      of you, you can
hold it with either hand, so you can free up the right hand to do other things.

Same as if your plane had dual sticks.
In the CH models, you would be holding the "Y" stick with the right hand - no choice
      here, unless
you want to be in a very awkward position, holding it with the left hand...

What do you want to know?....

      Here are a few tips

      1) Don't crack the canopy!...Warm the shop to 80F
      2) Use no rivets...They will crack the canopy...I used screws and cup
      washers all round for mine.
      3) My tubes did not fit...If you have to re bend them a little, makes
sure you do this BEFORE you drill any holes in the tubes...They will
snap otherwise. Tubes from ZAC were v expensive (and still wouldn't fit)
So I bought straight tubes from Aircraft Spruce. Made template from 1/4"
soft alu fuel pipe, Transferred shape to 3/4" particle board. Cut shape
and bent tubes around the template. Fill tube with sand and duct tape
the ends closed before bending...Worked great.

Hey come to think of it...Does anyone want by bending templates??? They
      might fit your canopy install.

      Frank

I built a non-stock version of the side hinged canopy. Where the plexiglass is
attached to the sheet metal I drilled the fastener holes oversize in the plex
and inserted spacers made from 1/4 inch aluminum tubing. The spacers are slightly
longer than the plastic is thick Then I used #4Avex rivets. Where the
plex is attached to tubing, I used oversized holes, screws and cup washers. If
I were doing it again I would make the 1/4 inch spacers from something harder
than fuel line tubing. They were hard to cut off in the lathe. Even steel
tubing would work OK. I haven't flown it yet, but it's been a couple of winters
since I finished the canopy, and so far no cracks.

I found that the side flange material at 75mm in height did not leave enough
edge distance in the plexiglass if I were to drill the 5/16" oversized
holes. I decided to remake my internal and external flanges 95mm in height.
My canopy is now just finished and I have good edge margins. The minimum is
now 23mm and the appearance is very good. Also be sure the rear tube and
front tubes touch the canopy at all locations prior to drilling anything.
Before final attachment of the interior flashing on the left, you may want
to use threadlocker on the latch release knob mechanism. Mine loosened
without many repetitions and I had to remove the flashing and tighten it. I
pre-drilled the top flange of the interior flashing to fall between the saw
cuts in the inside angle. Then I positioned the inside flashing and marked
the holes thru the flange onto the inside angle with a marker. This allows
all drilling to be done away from the plexiglass and still acheive the
      proper fit.
I temporarilly positioned the rubber seal beneath the front and rear canopy
during the initial drilling proceedure so that I knew that it will be a good
      fit later.
Everything else is staight forward. Take your time it could be an expensive
      mistake.

      Fellow XL builders,

I'm to the point where I have to drill the 1" hole for the Flap Control
Tubes. The builders guide states: "Use the Wing Jig 6B-13 to locate the
center of the Piano Hinge" I just wanted to make sure I'm understanding
this. Is it as simple as matching up the C channel of the jig with the rear
spar on the wing and then attaching a piece of pin that is in line with the
flap hinge pin? If I'm missing something here please let me know. The last
thing I want to do is drill this thing in the wrong place and have it bind
      or not work at all.

The next question is how did you place the Flap Control Bearings?

Any pictures of the procedure will be greatly appreciated!

As usual thanks for any help or advice.

mark: I think you need a gap between the steel frame and longeron top to clear
the latch and gas strut brackets. I plan on filling the gap with some weather
seal. I did lower the outside flashing on the canopy so you will not see the weather
seal when closed. I can't lower the canopy right now but as soon as I
can I will send you picts. Jack in Clovis ca

You can't avoid tha gap between the canopy frame and the longerons but, like
Jack said, you can make the aluminum sheet on the outside of the frame hang
down to hide the gap. You will find that air will flow out of this gap, not
in. I noticed that the sleeve of my shirt would get sucked out the gap until
I installed some soft foam weather strip on the bottom of the canopy frame.
I still have some air leaking out near the latches, it's hard to seal that
area. Of course, any air leaking out will draw air in elsewhere. I also
installed some foam weatherstrip between my seat backs and the frame because
cold air was leaking in around that area. Now the only place that air can
get in is through the cable tunnel down near the floor, but my heater will
take the chill off that air pretty quick.

I suspect that the reason that the tubes needed adjustment is that every
canopy is a little bit different due to the method of blowing them from flat
sheets of acrylic. I spent a lot time adjusting mine also.
