Dry ice is frequently used to take out dents in cars in tornado alley, it does so without even damaging paint most times. I have never done it but I understand that you wrap it in rags as it does not have to be very cold to work. I'm told light brief contact repeated until the skin is cold enough to contract is the proper method. I do not imagine that brief exposure to even extreme cold would over stress or change the temper of the metal. As always, gloves, safety glasses and thermal protection of exposed skin is a must. Maybe someone could experiment on a waste piece to see what happens. Hope this helps, let us know if it works. Good luck, Rick ----- Original Message ----- From: Joe Nance To: zenith-list@matronics.com Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2005 23:59 Subject: Zenith-List: dent in skin repair? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Joe Nance > Hello to those on this list. I am a new builder of a 701 and have now made my first mistake! In wraping the stabalizer skin around the nose ribs I created a small dent right at the tip of the rib. The dent is aprox. 3/4 inch long. It's not too bad but I'd like to fix it better than I have. Does anyone have any tips on pushing out small dents in the aluminum skin? Thanks! Put the ball inside the curve and use the magnet on the outside of the skin. I saw a video from a past Zenith-list message that showed a guy using this setup to remove dents from a Saxophone and it worked wonders. I will try to see if I can find the link, or you can check some of the archives. First of all, you MUST have a smooth, HARD surface underneath the aluminum sheet. I use a piece of 1/2 inch thick aluminum. It doesn't have to be large...just large enough to accomodate the area of the dent....but bigger is better, just to keep it solid and level. Place the dent over the HARD work surface and support it properly. A spoon works well, but any smooth, rounded tool would work, I suppose. Use a few drops of oil on the dent to keep the friction (scuffing) low. Work the spoon by rolling it around on the dent. Try not to slide the spoon over the surface..just roll it. I have had very good luck using this method. You can frequently see where the dent used to be because the surface will become a little scuffed in the process. But it can be polished out or painted over. My two cents worth. From: "Lance Gingell" --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Lance Gingell" Joe, I had *exactly* the same problem (but I'm not sure how it happened). I tried a few things. The one that worked best was to round off a piece of 2 x 4, but it inside the bend. Then tap the creased edges of the dent with a plastic mallet lightly, while pushing the wood against it at the back. In the words of the advice I got on this list 'go slowly and be patient'. It took a few minutes, but worked wonders. Search the archives for "leading & edge & dent" or " "leading & edge & crease". My log is at http://lancegingell/plane.asp I think there's a picture somewhere around 8/22/2004. Good luck! ..lance 601XL on fuse. -----Original Message----- From: owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Joe Nance Subject: Zenith-List: dent in skin repair? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Joe Nance Hello to those on this list.
