For a while now I am thinking of a variable pitch prop on the 701, does anyone
have advise on this?
Thanks,

Subject: | 701 Outboard Hinge Plate questions |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Tommy Walker" <twalker@cableone.net>
Hi,
I would like to ask other 701 builders if they had this problem?
I'm installing the hinge plates on the stabilizer and elevator:
1. The tip rib 7H1-2 measures approximately 110mm from top to bottom.
Plans say to measure 50mm down from top to mark the hinge line.
2. The 7H3-1 Outboard Hinge Plate is 100mm from top to bottom and plans say
to mark the centerline, drill the hinge pin hole at 135mm from the front. I
did this and placed the centerline for the hinge plate on the tip rib hinge
line. This doesn't look right, the top of the hinge plate is even with the
top of the skin, and the bottom of the hinge plate is about 9-10mm higher
than the bottom of the rib (geeze, I hope I'm making sense).
3. I emailed Nick at ZAC but haven't heard from him. I made digital pics
and sent to help with what I'm trying to say. Has anyone else faced this
problem? I know the hinge centerline in the middle bracket has this same
50mm spacing so I think I am consistent in my measurements. I would be glad
to send any of you 701 builders my photos if you could offer some advice.
I can go ahead and drill the rivet line where the plans appear to tell me,
but I'd rather have some confirmation or correction if possible.
Thanks a lot!

Subject: Zenith-List: N114AR First Flight
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Alejandro Roca <alex_roca@mac.com>
To ALL
I am Happy to report that the first flight of N114AR (Zociac XL -
Jabiru 3300) went beyond my expectations. I received my airworthiness
certificate on 1/15 but had to wait until today due to bad weather. Finally
today here in South Texas (San Antonio) winds were calm, ceilings at 25000
ft and OAT at around 45F. I Went to work this morning and looked at this
weekends forecast which called for more rain and decided it was now or
never. After telling my boss that I was taking the day off, I then called my
Tech counselor and my hangar mate (did the radios) and made plans to meet at
the airport. After a thorough preflight I jumped in and started down the
runway. I performed one last high speed taxi test where I raised the nose
slightly so as to feel comfortable that I would have enough elevator
authority (should not have been an issue since my calculated takeoff CG was
at 26% of MAC and my take off weight at 1037 lbs). During this test I
reported to base that I felt a n!
ose wheel shimmy going down the runway. Not considering this a big problem
we decided to go.
I applied full power and saw about 2600 2700 on climb out. Not
until I saw some pictures did I realize that I took off in what seemed less
that 500 ft and that I was climbing like a bat out of hell. Once at pattern
altitude my hottest CHT was getting close to max (349F) I reduced power and
temps immediately got back to normal. After doing some gentle maneuvers I
was ecstatic to realize that I did not have a heavy left wing and that I
could perfectly trim the aircraft for level flight. After reporting to base
the hottest CHT at 323F and the lowest being 215F I realized I am going to
have to add some deflectors inside the Jabirus baffles so as to force the
air around cylinders # 3 and #4. Oil temps at 160F might be on the low side.
All in all the Jabiru performed flawlessly. After a couple of minutes of
Googoo gaga I was reminded by the ground crew to climb to 5500 ft and start
working on slow flight. I cant say enough about how responsive this a/c is
to the touch, ev!
en in slow flight. I did not perform a stall (I will leave that for next
flight). At 5500 at about 2600 rpm I was showing 110 mph. (I have no wheel
pants). After about 40 minutes into the flight I decided to prepare for
landing. I flew the pattern and turned onto final at about 90mph (a little
too fast), but once I cut the power, it sure slowed down! Landing was
probably not one of my best but since I am not used to the a/c, it was
better that I expected. I will report more performance numbers later in the
testing phase.
Thank you to this list and all who participate in it by providing
experience, knowledge and most of all, differences in opinions! This has
been an incredible journey that in many ways has just started.
Thank you

My sentiments exactly. Sure this list is for talking about aviation and
Zenith planes in general, but is it not also a social place where you
can share things like this and become friends? I love airplanes and
experimental aviation of course, but I do do other things too!

Dirk,
I doubt the 701 has the range of performance to gainfully use an in flight
adjustable prop,
and that probably applies without knowing what kind of engine you're
considering or using
Don't think the 701 has that much performance spread for the money.
That's not a bad thing,,,, just is.

Dirk,
you might want to check out skyshop's variable pitch prop for the 701, it's
on their web site. they seemed to think it helped cruise performance.
perhaps give them a call, just a thought.

Just last week two goofy morning disk jockeys told that story.
I heard it in stereo.
They swore it was the truth. They even gave the poor guys' name.
And his address.
Swore on a stack of Long Necks that it was the truth.
If you heard it on the radio, its the truth!
Thats what we deal with here, truth.

Ok guys. My butt is still smokin' from my next to last post so I did
something to help remedy that situation. I started a new group on Yahooch for
comedians and their airplanes. It's to keep guys like me from getting flamed.
It's
a group to post your funny (or not so funny) airplane stories, jokes of any
kind (clean) and just to have a good time without ruffling feathers of the
serious type. It's for anybody that likes ANY airplane and wants to share. It's
new so come join, post something stupid and lets see if it becomes a benefit
to our community. Excuse this one time mention of it on this list. I just want
to have a place for everything and everything in.........ahhhhh, shut up.
Check it out.

HI guys,
I've been working up to where paint is the next logical thing and
I'm wondering what kind and how much paint is needed to do an HDS. Looking
at epoxy prime and polyurethanes (at arms reach). If this stuff is the best answer,
I'll use it, but I've never prepped and sprayed anything but lacquers.
Can anyone say how many quarts or gallons are needed for a full cover and how
much it weighs after finish? Is there a better time than in the spring?
I'd like to hear the positives and the negatives, but
All experiences and opinions are welcome.

Tommy,
If you would like to see a good pic of this installation, go to CH701.com.
Under builder links go to Larry Martins site.
Find your way to the fiberglass horizontal tip area. There is a good photo
of the hinge location. Its as you describe, flush at the top. Mine is in
storage right now but the location of mine is similar, maybe a little lower from
the top. This was a concern of mine at the time also. I waited to drill the
hinges to the end of the stab until my elevator was finished enough to fit it.
The pivot point in the middle is a big determining factor in its final
location. I bolted the stab and elevator at the middle hinge and determined the
best
location where everything will line up, and it did work out perfect. You can
predrill the hinges with all holes but dont drill them to the stab yet. If
you don't like the look in the end consider Larrys fiberglass tips. I will be
ordering a set in spring. Right now I'm getting nickeled and dimed to death
with my panel and electrical system.

I sent this out the other day but never made it to the list.
Jack,
First I have to say the panel looks really nice! Looking at the picture I
see you have the intercom on the center panel.
Some thoughts.
Is the panel and center panel bonded together well? Are you using shielded
wire on the HS jacks and is the shielded cable grounded on only the intercom
end and not the jack end? Are the HS jacks isolated from the airframe? Is the
tray the Icom slides into grounded well to the panel. Is the Turn
Coordinator, Icom, Intercom, and all other goods on panel grounded to a single
point
ground? You might be getting a ground loop noise from grounds being located in
different areas. I'm using the single point ground from B&C that bolts thru
the firewall with spade connectors on both cockpit and firewall sides.

Derek,
I have installed several variable pitch propellers on our 701s. The most
usefull is the Quinti variable pitch with reverse for float plane 701.
Also there is 2 bladed Varia, manual adjustment, that's available. Our
standard prop is 68" Woodcomp carbon fiber prop which gives great
performance all around. Recently I have been working with Sensenich and
testing their new prop specifically designed for 912S and the speed
range the 701 and 601XL fly within. This prop is exceptional in
performance, smoothness and quietness. If you see the blades in person
you can appreciate the advanced geometry of the blades. This is a good
choice for both 701 and 601XL. The price is $1400. Have a look at our
web site for more details.
Best regards. Danny

An Inexpensive Portable Aircraft Wash
Today we had haze and 4-mile visibility, so after lunch at the Lucky 8, skies cleared
at 60-degrees. I washed my Saturn and gathered materials for a 3-1/2- gallon
airplane wash. A 2-1/2 gallon herbicide pump was purchased at Lowe's for
$23.00. It was filled with just clean water and a 1-gallon windshield-washer
jug was filled with soapy water. The jug, two towels, a sponge and a roll of paper
towels were put into a 5-gallon can and all were taken to the hangar where
there is no running water. It worked great. The pump wet the surfaces a wing
at a time without spraying the canopy. This was followed up with a soap-filled
sponge. The pump provided a surface rinse, followed by a wipe down. There was
a gallon left over, but it would have been used had it been summer. A shiny
601HDS with clean tires was back in the hangar by sunset and I was home for pizza
at 5:00 p.m.
Had to share this because there are a lot of hangars out there without running
water.

The new Sensenich prop looks pretty sweet.
I have no commercial involvement with Kievprop but I do use their 75" one on my Rans S-7 and the performance is outstanding. Very light and tough but also extremely quiet, smooth, and efficient. http://www.kievpropamerica.com/
