I just put my Corvair Conversion on eBay 4526062827
It sure would do a good job on a 601. William Wynne
has a lot of Corvair/601 info on his website
(www.flycorvair.com) If you would like more info
about the engine drop me a line cdmbam@yahoo.com or
give me a call 623 546 1238 Chuck Mulloy

I remember a year or so ago some discussion of loud turn & bank
instruments on the AeroElectric Matronics list. The electronic geru
Bob Knuckolls suggested that the noise problem should be stopped at the
source by shielding the instrument with a (I assume grounded) wrap of
galvanized metal, aluminum foil, or copper foil. I'm sure you will be
able to find these discussions if you use the Matronics search engine.

Subject: | 701 Corrosion Protection |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: <burkeandsusan@verizon.net>
I am considering the 701 and am thinking ahead about internal corrosion
protection and would appreciate some opinions.
My plan would be to build and fly the thing on wheels at first but
eventually put it on floats. I am near the Chesapeake Bay and have a lot of
nice water around. The water, however, is salty.
I have read in this space a lot about corrosion and priming but frankly
don't relish the idea of priming every internal piece with mil-spec epoxy.
My thought would be to prep the internals with metal prep and alodine, put a
couple of coats of zinc chromate on each part and then periodically treat
the whole internal structure with something like Corrosion X. The question
is, would this be enough to prevent corrosion even if I put it on floats in
salt water?
Do I have to do all this AND put epoxy primer on everything?
Comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Burke Johnson

Burke,
I can only draw my opinion on using your bird in salt water from a course
taken a few years ago on corrosion control while working in the DOD.
The idea of coating each piece rings true, especially in the presence
of salt water and the air that evaporates from it. Your plane will be
saturated by
the atmosphere, so I'd consider the epoxy the easier route if you
look further down the line where everything on the plane is going to be
affected
to some degree by the atmosphere. Anything that gets scratched, dinged or
pocked by something sharp or vibrating will have you refinishing or
removing the corrosion that attacks each part. Much easier to attack it
first with the best means available than find yourself in a continuously
larger
circle of refirbishment later. At the least I'd go for the epoxy and a hard
finish for the exterior. Rinse everything in freshwater every time you pull
it
out. Wipe dry. It's still going to be something to deal with. A periodic
recoat of anything is not going to do it for you. You only have one shot at
a good protective coating. The second is called restoration because you'll
have to remove the first to apply an effective second first coat.
A good number of years ago,
Cessna and customers learned a harsh lesson about not having a good prime
coat
on the inside surfaces of their aircraft and just being near the ocean.
Their
aircraft structures were essentially scrap from the salt air a few years
after
warranties expired. 6061 is good as it gets for this kind of abuse, but I'd
protect the innards as best possible once. Zinc Chromate by itself is not
enough
against a salt atmosphere where parts are disassembled or riveted by
conventional
pull type rivets.
We very recently had an example of an English 601 that had broken motor
mounts and very badly
corroded mounting surfaces at the firewall from a few years of salt air.
Also, an .035 wall 4130
motor mount will degrade rapidly in the salt environment and I'd fill it
with Boiled Linseed oil
and drain the mount before closing it off as well. Stinson airframes were
done this way
and outlasted a lot of Piper aircraft that didn't. You can't afford to look
short term
at aircraft construction, because it's going to be around long enough for
someone to
get hurt by a failed part if it's not done right.
Good luck,
Larry McFarland - 601HDS

Larry and Rick,
Many thanks for responding to my question about the panel. I had also
interpreted 6F-16 as meaning the exact location was somewhat arbitrary, but
Chris's response to Rick sure looks like even 2" variance could be
important. I'm pretty sure others have moved it forward, perhaps without
Chris's input, and I'd be very interested in the results.
Rick, can you be more specific about the gussets Chris recommended? Where
and what were they exactly?
Appreciado,
Bob
