When I got my Drill Doctor sharpener, I did what almost everybody do:
unpacked it and sharpened one bit at once.
ERROR. It was a mess.
Than, I read the instructions that came with it and again I missed the point
on the importance of centering the bit. A mess again.
Than, I watched the video (twice) that they provide with the sharpener
showing exactly how to center the bit and how to apply pressure on the bit
and WOW it did a wondefull job.
Hope this helps

Oh! and I forgot to say. The smaller the bit, the less turn you have to
apply to obtain a sharp bit. The video says it all anyway. Like in aviation,
practice makes better.

I like doing business with Pan American - http://www.panamericantool.com/
They sell bits by the dozen. If I recall correctly, they were so cheap I had to
ask if they priced the bits each or per package. (The answer was per package.)
I stocked up and offered them to the (3!) other XL builders in the Cincinnati
area.
When I bought, they had a $50 minimum order, but I also got a pneumatic cleco tool,
so that wasn't a problem.
(I also bought some clecos, later I learned you could get them used from the Yard
Store.)
NOTE! As I've said in the past, always buy twice as many #40 bit as larger sizes.
When drilling pilot holes, you use the entire face and from what I've seen,
#40's get dull faster because of it.
Just my 2 cents worth, (Actual value may be far less than 2 cents)

I used metalprep on my steel parts. The first time I did this outside on a
warm afternoon. I scrubbed with scotchbrite and the metalprep, rinsed and
dried. It had a coat of rust on it within 10 minutes. It was late in the day and
was high humidity.
On the second try I made sure it was nice and sunny and low humidity.
Cleaned off all the rust using the metal prep79.I went over all parts with paint
thinner and a rag within a few minutes. Coated with 2 coats of grey steel
primer(rustolium)
and put 2 coats of rustolium paint immediatly afterward. Its been sitting in
the damp garage for 9 months now with no sign of rust or corrosion of any
kind. I live on Eastern Long Island surrounded on 3 sides by salt water.
I think its important to get the paint on immediatly.

Zed,
The link below will take you to a photoshare from Ben Haas who provides the
part numbers. This install is in an 801.
I found the brackets a bit too big and made my own out of scrap aluminum in
a racetrack shape.I had to cut one layer off the bellows to get them to fit
nice. It turned out very nice. The brackets were almost as expensive as the
bellows. I think I still have the brackets from Yamaha if you want them for
free.
I got mine from http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/

Ther is a company in Canada that does CERMAKROME.
For information on cermakrome, go to the RLD Industries, Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada web site. www.rldindustries.com This company coated my muffler on my
plane 200 hrs ago. I have never cleaned or polished my exhaust since and it
still looks like new.

I am mounting mine at the extreme forward position then attaching blocks to
make them in a comfortable flying position. This way, I can guarantee that
they will "fit me" and will work for other pilots, Initially I will not put
any extensions on the co-pilot side to give more legroom for passengers.
An added benefit is that I won't be wearing away the finish on the steel
assemblies.

Just A comment regarding chrome platting rudder
pedals, Front landing gear, and step tubing.
A serious cosequence of platting 4130 steel is
Hydrogen Embrittlement. Without proper post treatment
of the platted parts it can cause cracks in the steel
under the platting, leading to breakage. I'm no expert
on the subject, but advise those with chrome platted
structual parts to investigate.

I searched the archive just last week and found where to buy them and the part
numbers. I think the archive posters were building an 801 and also said to buy
the mounting plate. I found the mounting plate won't work on the 701 and I had
to cut the boot down and make a mounting plate so don't buy the plate if using
on a 701.This is where I ordered from;
XtremePowersports.com
8CR-2198F-00-00 Cover1 ( this is the boot) $15.21 ea.
8CR-2195E-00-00 Plate $13.11

I have been reading with interest all the comments on fuel pumps, location, redundancy
and vapor lock problems. Last week I spoke with William Wynne about his
Corvair conversions and I ask about his setup, he has two facet pumps on the
firewall because he didn't like pressurize fuel lines running through the cabin.
In his opinion, if the line ruptures you would have gasoline spraying in
the cabin, with the pumps on the firewall it would be sucking fuel through the
cabin area a leak would be just a drip. That's the good thing about this list,
you get a lot of points to consider, some of which I would I would never thought
of. At this point I still don't know how I will set it up but I will have
to make a decision soon.

There is a way to satisfy the desire for no pressurized lines in the cockpit
and no fuel pumps on the firewall. Mount the pumps on the cockpit side of
the firewall with their outlet fittings poking through a hole in the
firewall.

I believe William is designing his systems for avgas, not
autogas...Autogas has a much higher vapour pressure, hence vapour lock
risk.
Get onto the Eggenfelner website and ask why they moved their pumps from
the firewall to inside the cabin..Ok I'll tell you...An RV crashed on
take off and they put it down to vapour lock....And yes they were using
cooling blast tubes before anyone points that out.
Also if you have a leak on the inlet side of the pump it is unlikely to
be a drip like you say, more like it will suck air and air lock the
pump!....Then your engine stops....Liquid leak inside the cockpit is
only an issue if you have a high concentration of vapours and a
spark...Fuel lines do not rupture except in a crash and you "should"
have turned off your pumps before you land.
If you are only ever going to use Avgas you have a bigger margin of
saftey with this system but note RV's always have the boost pumps on the
cabin floor even with avgas...There is a good reason for that.
I'm not saying the wing pumps are an ideal solution but the first time
the fan stops on takeoff with auto fuel and 100 degrees outside don't
say you weren't warned!
All the best

black then covered them with wing walk tape. Feet won't slip and paint

Larry, I don't think washing steel with water is too good of an idea. Go to
the auto paint store and buy a gallon of pre-primer solvent. The stuff is
mostly alcohol and will clean off any oils from your hands. Drys in seconds.
Tac
off the piece and prime. I seen bare 03 steel rust in moments in damp
weather. Good luck, Bill of Georgia
