For an 801, I'd order a case of 12. You might need more if you intend to
coat
all interior surfaces before you close up etc. Don't apply it as a total
cover for
large areas unless you live near the ocean. Spray a cover coat only on the
contact
surfaces you rivet together and those subject to collecting and evaporating
condensate
like ribs, bulkhead flanges and spars etc. On a protective non-covering
coat the aluminum
will still nearly show through.

view point or his instructions. Hal, with his three degrees, should be

apology. Hal, will you please advise us on a problem with the instructions from
Jabiru on the different torque patterns they show in their plans. Under FWF

manufacture of the kit indicates the torque sequence is 1,4,2,5,3,6. The following

(page 4) indicates the torque sequence as 1,4,6,3,5,2. I would ask Pete or

such questions, which pattern is the correct one? Again, Hal I hope this has

Where in the FAR's does it say that an A&P can perform conditional inspections
or is it just implied because it does not say that an A&P can't perform them?

Bill,
Those are the same torque patterns - just a mirror image of the sequence.
The point is to pick a bolt and torque it, then torque the bolt 180 degrees
from that first one. Proceed around the hub either closkwise or counter
clockwise (anti clockwise if you speak Australian) to the other 4 bolts.

The bottom line to this discussion may be as simple as which way you are going
to safety wire the bolts. Safety wire on the back of the hub could be a real
pain to do correctly. If the bolt heads are not drilled then you tie the nuts.
Just follow the manufactures instructions or the AC43.13 for the best practices.

You appear to be in a rural agricultural area. If so. Many Farm supply
stores like Orscheln's or Tractor Supply, carrry farm implement paints and
primers.
Our local Orschelns carries zinc chromate primer, in both quarts and
gallons. Its more yellow in color than the traditional green though.....
VanSickle Paints is the brand name and about $6.00 a quart . You may
contact them, and see if they have a retailer in your area. If the price
of ASpruce scares you.

I'm sure you will find that you may have to add about a 30lb battery to
the tail section. I was just having this conversation yesterday with a
601HD builder. Some points also to consider are if you have a header
tank or Baggage tanks or leading edge. Plus any modifications made to
the bird. But as a rule heavy engines require more rear weight.

Hi
For Rays 601 HD with cont 0 200 we have worked out from an inital
weigh unpainted externaly it will have to be at the rear of the fuselage
(he is using a 14 lbs gel battery),
but will have to recheck this when he has reduced the weight of his cowl and
anything else he can as the plane is heavy. We will re weigh when he has
painted and reasembled and I will post location.. A weight & balance chart
is avaliable on Zenith web site.

I made a shelf above my feet and mounted the battery there along with my
alititude encoder. It's a bit nose heavy with just me and a full load of
fuel. I have not been able to load the plane to the aft end of the CG
range. When I flew to Dallas, my most aft CG was 373 mm (wife, dog, 20 lbs
of baggage, min fuel) This may or may not work for you as I have a HD with
a custom engine mount that I built. I do not know if my engine is as far
forward as William Wynne's.

As of this afternoon I have completed the 40 hr phase 1 test flight
period on my Jab 3300 powered 601HD. The plane flies great and is
definitely controllable in all flight phases. Now I can actually go
someplace other than 25 from home base but will wait until warmer
weather as the cabin heat does not work well and get cold feet
(literally). Although I'm mostly a lurker, I appreciate the info I get
from the list.

That 40 hours is a real blast isn't it. It seems the circle gets smaller
the longer you stay there. Your's is the first reported HD with

I am impressed with the amount of energy it must take to compact one's mind

Many of your questions can be answered by referring to AC 20-27F. There are
also some standing FAA orders that must be followed plus much of the rules
are spelled out in the airplane operating limitations that each Amateur
built plane receives during the final inspection. The details are not in the
FARs. You can also go to the EAA web site... www.eaa.org for more
information.

Let me add my congratulations to you. I really know what you mean about
the limited area of operations as I completed 20.1 hours today on my
Jab/HDS today. I've only been to a couple of other airports as my
confidence in the installation has risen and it's great to see the

I dont understand US law system of liability, here is diferent, so no comment
in that...
About prop bolts here is one point of view: I have flown ultralights for more
than 12 years, (the 701 is an ultralight here) all the previous ones I built
and flown were using Rotax 2 cycle and other brands of engines from Europe,
also a couple of VW conversions.
My point is this: Most of the prop instalations in this engines dont use safety
wires, just torque values and sometimes once the bolt was torqued, add a nylon
stop nut for safety... I beguin using safety wire and advise towards it
since I read the Tony Binguilis books several years ago.
Most UL pilots here dont use the safety wire in the prop bolts and I never read
about bolt shear or failure here (or in Europe) with proper retorque mantainance
done. Most manuals and Guru's advise: To retorque at least twice a year
all wood propellers (because of humidity and dry seasons), also at least once
a year the composite ones with aluminum hubs, could be done with the year condition
inspection of the plane, with or without the use of safety wired bolts.
When ever I got an engine without safety wire, I carefully drilled the holes and
safety them, some have followed my advise here. This is done for my own peace
of mind, the idea is this:
If you or anyone in the list feels that adding the safety wire is better, go ahead,
buy the 6 new bolts from Spruce or Wicks, or drill the ones that come with
your engine. But what ever we decide the important part is to retorque the
bolts twice a year, not just preflight the safety wire.
Common sence, proper mantainace and flying experience is the only thing that will
keep us alive in aviation, not sueing to death (remember Airbike?) the Designers
and Kit manufacturers that are willing to share with us the great Spot of
Flying.

"front to back, out-board to in-board" unless restricted by design. Right? So

I spoke to Nick H about this exact issue a couple of years back at SnF or
OSH and he said that the deformation wasn't so much caused by getting in and
out of the plane but due to kneeling on the wing to do maintenance. Given
that N9601Z gets more use (and abuse) in a year than any of ours will in 10
years then the simple solution is to place a thick piece of carpet on the
wing walk whenever you are doing maintenance kneeling on the wing. I could
be wrong but I decided against putting a doubler under the inboard area of
the upper wing skin. Less weight and no opportunity to trap moisture between
the skins.
Just my 2c (plus s+h and tax)

I spoke to WW about this at OSH or SnF and he has installed the battery
behind the passenger seat behind 6B5-1 and just forward of 6B5-2. I asked
Nick H about fabricating a bracket in that area to hold the battery. You'll
need some 0.040 to make a reinforcing channel between 6B5-1 and 6B5-2. You
can work out an alternative such as a couple of pieces of 0.090 or 0.125
angle if you don't have 0.040. The TD and the trigear must balance in the
same range in order to fly so the gear configuration isn't an issue. When WW
was designing the engine mount, the prop flange was positioned in the same
place as for the Jabiru engine. Since the Corvair is about 32 - 37 pounds
heavier than the Jabiru you won't be putting the battery on the firewall.
Given that the O-235 installation puts the battery back in the tail, then
you know that you will need to plan to put the battery somewhere behind the
seats, most likely either just forward or aft of 6B5-2. Because of the flap
motor, you'll be better to put it on the passenger side.

So I'm gathering the pieces for my XL's control panel. I went looking for a
Garmin GTX 327 transponder and noticed that a number of sites wouldn't sell
the unit direct. Some want to install it, others say "Dealer Install ONLY
for Certified Aircraft". Can I install my own transponder? Must I use a
certified tech? Or do I simply need to have the FAR 91.413 (transponder) and
91.411 (static system) certifications done every two years?
