A friend who built a Cozy had the latch handle inside, and cut a small
hand-sized door to access it. He then put a key lock (similar to cabinet
style) on the access door. You unlock the access door, push it in, reach
in, and unlatch the canopy. Simple, clean, and not very heavy.

Thanks! Jack Russell sent me a link to his simple solution. Look at the

Craig,
I designed and built one for my 601HD with a forward tilting canopy, but
it does take some machining to make the part.

Builders,
I have some generic Weight and Balance forms I'll be glad to e-mail to
those of you who would like a generic form to follow for figuring out where to
place different items. I've used for up to six place aircraft with a couple
additional lines on form. It is in an excel format so those of you that are
smarter than me on the computer can do it automatically when numbers are
inserted.
Insure your Wt & Bal is correct, will save your plane, possibly you.
Please send request to emaproducts@aol.com put Wt & Bal in subject line.
might be a couple days getting it to you, sent over 30 out to another builders
list a few months ago.

How would a rescuer open your friends canopy if he crashed the plane and was
rendered unable to open it himself from the inside? It sounds like the
rescuer would have to go find something to break open the canopy to get the
pilot out. A person could burn to death in the time it takes to do that. My
canopy release is on the outside and well marked for anyone to see with an
arrow pointing the direction to turn it to open the canopy. Someday I will
look for a method to lock the canopy from the outside with a key. I think
maybe a tool box lock with a rotating hook and a eye on the inside to mate
with the hook.

Uhh, it only locks on the outside? So, if you're in it, it's not locked.

Last year, in a kitplane publication, I saw an article in which the builder
used a desk drawer lock. This was mounted behind the canopy latch in such a
manner that when the lock arm was rotated and locked it prevented the canopy
latch from rotating.
I thought I had saved the article but am unable to locate it.

Yeah, complete with that gawd-aweful baby blue panel color... What is it
with Russian aircraft and that color? Take a look at the TU-154 flight deck
and you'll know what I mean!

Subject: | XL dual sticks in a CH601-HD |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Carlos Sa <carlosfsa@yahoo.com>
Hello, Listers
This question is addressed to the builders of XLs with the dual stick option.
I have the plans for the dual sticks (dated 01/04), which I'd like to
install on my plane.
My question regards the clearance between the bottom of the control
column (6DS3-1) and the spar, when the column is moved full forward.
The assembly instructions indicate that the bottom of the control columns
(more precisely, the bolts welded to them) will hit the spar (page 2,
section 2: www.zenithair.com\zodiac\xl\data\6-b-17.pdf ) when the control
columns are in their full forward position.
Since the CH601-HD spar is vertical (as opposed to the XL's, which is
tilted forward), it would
seem to me that there will be less room between the bottom of the
control column (6DS3-1) and the spar, thus the possibility of
interference.
Can somebody tell me how much clearance I need in that area so I have
proper deflection of the elevator?
Or any other data point that will help me locate control connection
6DS2-2 in relation to the spar?
I sent this question to ZAC, but I don't think they understood the
question. See reply below:
" You may want to consider moving 6V4-9 up close to the top edge of the flanged
lightening hole on the spar. On drawing 6-DS-1 you will note that the torque tube
is not
centered on the XL center spar. "
FYI, 6V4-9 is the HD's version of 6B17-6, the torque tube's front bearing.
Carlos

Gents,
High Tech Foams quoted me $224+ sh for a 601 seat
foam package that included enough material in three
densities to construct the two seats. Anyone know of
a better (cheaper) place to do business? Good places
to buy durable upholstery material online?
Thanks,
Brandon Tucker

Finally. I got started tonight. I didn't have much time, but I got the
rudder spar and doublers drilled, deburred, and riveted together. Boy, does it
feel good to pull that first rivet.
