If I understood your previous post, the only way to open the canopy from the
outside is to unlock a small access panel and reach inside to turn the
canopy latch and lift it open. I assume you then have to re-lock the access
panel. If the pilot is inside with the canopy closed and knocked unconscious
by the impact, how does someone outside the plane get the canopy open to
rescue the pilot? Can the access panel left unlocked after entry?

Hello Rog:
Congratulations ! I fondly remember the first rivet like I remember my
first, oops, never mind....wrong list !! (LOL)!!
Seriously though, just one question - what are you doing for corrosion
protection?
And a comment - please include 'Do Not Archive' on posts that do not need
historical archiving for future generations of Zenith builders....
Again, congratulations !!

That's great! Just remember to do something every day on the plane.
One full day and 6 off isn't as productive as 7 days of steady small

Thanks Tracy and Brandon. When we had our EAA chapter meeting Sunday at the
airport, one of the guys had almost a half quart of zinc chromate that he
wasn't going to use and he gave it to me. So yes, it got treated. That's what
I
like about this list, you can't get by with anything, somebody's going to
catch it. And thanks Tracy for the heads up on Do Not Archive. I forgot in my

You can get a 76X80 piece of 2"X76"X80" 5.5 lb memory foam at www.myrest.com
for about $170. That should make 4 or 5 seats. Larry N1345L

building Corvair engine, but no XL parts yet...hopefully later this year...
possibly you can find effective, durable, and pleasantly pleasing asthetics with
marine hardware...BUT...whatever hardware you use, one thing to PLEASE consider
when you add a locking mechanism to the outside of your canopy...
make absolutely certain it cannot engage itself when you are inside the airplane
or you aren't gonna be able to get out !!!

Not correct.

There is a spring latch to hold the access door closed when it is not
locked. It is normally only locked when the plane is left unattended.

Hey all
Does anyone know of a way or solvent to remove stubborn protective sheet from aluminum
sheet? I know that when its fresh it comes off easily and usually if its
been sitting for a while a little heat helps lots, but I have some that is
probably 6 or 7 years old and will not come off1 I've even tried lacquer thinner,
brake clean, paint stripper and auto brake fluid (which takes paint off car
hoods) all to no avail. Is there anything that will dissolve this plastic?
I hate to discard good sheet for this reason.

I'm about to start working on the seat pan for my 701. I have been debating whether
or not to install the electric flaps actuator from skyshops. This would let
me lower the seat pan and have more headroom and legroom, at least according
to Skyshops advertisement for the electric flaps. There would be infinite amount
of flap positions as opposed to only 15 degrees on the plans. The cost is
$589.00. Anybody give me their opinions to help me decide to go with the electric
flaps or not?

This maybe a redundant message but in any case...
This supplier has a minimum order I believe of $50. At 50cents a drill
bit that's 100 bits,...I can't for the life of me see any chance of
using this many bits so was wondering if anyone had bought a "boatload"
and wanted to sell some?
I guess I could do the same if anyone wanted to split and order with me?
I was thinking of getting say 75 #40 and 25 #30 (the 40's break more
often.
Anyone interested?

Builders,
I am very happy to send out the Wt & Bal forms to those of you who need them,
I believe I've sent out about 30 so far. However it does bring something to
light ~~ Evidently none of those requesting own what I call the "Bible for
Homebuilders" Advisory Circular 43.13-1B & 43.13-2A. The current book has 24
pages just on Wt & Bal, complete with examples, how to etc.
The title of this is Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices and
Aircraft Alternations in the combined book, however it is known simply as AC
42.13. This book is about two inches thick and has the "FAA" recommended way of
doing almost everything you need to know for building an aircraft! It covers
Wood, Fiberglass & Plastics, Metal structure welding, brazing, & riveting
constructions methods & repair. Aircraft hardware, covering materials, engines,
props, electrical system, wiring, safety wiring and just tons of other
information. If you are building you will wear one copy out just checking stuff!
I've had the AC 43.13 in my library for years, and get updates every now and
then for reference. If all had it there would be simple answers to many
questions on the list, such as 43.13, Chapt xx says to do it this way.
If it is good enough for certified aircraft it is good for the homebuilts, is
your life any less important just because you are not flying a factory built
airplane??
I purchased my last copy from Jeppesen, however most suppliers sell it.
Always willing to help as much as my schedule permits.

I stumbled across this site http://www.mcmaster.com/ they offer foam in
various thickness, width, length, density. From the main page enter "confor
foam" into the Find search field. From there it takes you through a number
of different screens to select your choice. Looks like you can put together
the layers you would need to build a nice seat.
The other option on this site, from the main page scroll down to the "Raw
Materials and Springs" section and select "Rubber and Foam Rubber" This
takes you to a broad search with many more parameters, including tensile
strength and specifications (FDA, MIL, UL, etc.)
Ron Dewees offered the following suggestions from Aircraft Spruce as an
inexpensive alternative.

Hello All:
Can some 601HD flyer advise me as to the pitch attitude of the airplane in the
level cruise condition? I want to determine the fuel quantity markings for my
8 gallon fuselage tank before finishing my instrument panel. It would be most
helpful to know the angle of the cockpit sill in cruising flight so I can put
the fuselage in that attitude as I fill the tank and note the resulting sight
gage indication.
Thanks in advance for any assistance on this.

I added a curved "L" to the inside of the top skin between the ribs of the
walkway on my HDS. My project isn't yet to the point where I can test the
"improvement" by walking on it yet, though, so I can't tell how it will
work.
Since I am fairly heavy, it seemed like a simple and lightweight way to beef
up the walkway area.

So, I'm planning to fly Art Mitchel's 601 from the Guelph area to somewhere
around STL. The aircraft apparently doesn't have a transponder installed,
so I'll be needing to stay out of the appropriate airspaces.
Anyone got any good pointers on the route? Art suggests Sandusky Ohio as a
good cutoms crossing point into the U.S... But that would take me across
the west end of Lake Erie. I was wondering about Port Huron... anyone know
what type of airspace they're in? (I don't have the charts here)...
I've doing some route planning with the gps. I'll have to circumnavigate
the Cleveland and Detroit airspaces for sure. The thing I'm a little
unclear on wrt to transpoder, etc... the Garmin Pilot III unit shows what it
calls "Mode C veil" areas around these large airports that go right down to
the surface. Yet, inside of this, the Type B airspace "inverted wedding
cakes" are also indicated (i.e. where I can stay below the airspace that
requires a transponder). So I'm a little confused by the "mode C veil"
term.
I'm sure all this will be clearer when I've got the actual VNC charts.
One more question -- what documents will I need to carry on board to fly an
amateur built into the U.S.A?
Thanks for the feedback!

To my delighted surprise after about 2 hours I came back and the paint
stripper was causing it to blister and after 2 more applications it is
finally clean. That stuff is lots tougher than paint!

Grant,
The type B airspace requirements for most of us is to keep clear 30 miles
from an
airport designated as Type B. The mode C veil extends from the ground to
10,000 ft
on the 30 mile boundary for a type B airport. Mode C is a transponder
reporting a 125 foot altitude
accuracy and position. If you call the airport ATC authority one hour or
earlier before
crossing their airspace, they will often acknowlege you and permit a
restricted flight thru that
airspace,,,,, at a prescribed altitude ,,,or not. You need good I.D. and
your Airworthiness
Certificate in the plane with you. Arriving at US Customs, it would be good
to file a Flight
Plan with the FAA to permit them to assist you in the flight to and from.
The address below
will show you more about what Port Huron airport is and provides info on
airport contacts.

Are you a member of EAA? You can use Aeroplanner for free with an EAA
membership. Just go to EAA.org and there is a link on the first page. AOPA
has one too, but I like Aeroplanner because it shows it's charts just like
a sectional.
Sandusky and Port Huron areas are class E,
Mode C veil is usually 30 nm from a Class B airport. An altitude reporting
transponder is required even though you may be flying under the class B
airspace.

I'm not sure how to relate the flying attitude to you. It is slightly tail
high from where it sits on the ground, but not much. Yours may be
different. I think I would mark it with something temporary until you see
how yours flies.

Hi 601 drivers-- I am now into 23rd hour of phase I and have noticed
from the first flights that the baggage doors are trying to flex at
higher speeds. I already have 5 Dzus fasteners along the edges and
three rows of "L" stiffeners riveted to the bottom side of the lid. I
don't know whether to add more "L" stiffeners closer to the edges of the
lid or scrap the whole lid and go to a thicker piece of metal for the
lid. Anyone else had the problem and found a solution?

I've got a V within a standard angle perimeter that works really well. No
sign of bulge or movement
at all. You might check out this "underside picture" of the baggage door.

Acetone will take it off if you will wet a towel and lay the wet towel on
the plastic for a few minutes. I'm sure that will work, but just in case it
doesn't, you can always use paint stripper. Larry N1345L

Hi Grant;
In flying to Mexico, MO which is just to the NW of STL, we crossed at
Port Huron. A slight deviation will take you clear of the Detroit 30
mile circle.
You need to download the form from the FAA about border crossing. There
is a link to it from COPA. Carry a passport. Get your Us Customs sticker
before you go online.
Flight plan the border crossing as well as phone US Customs.
It all works pretty easy actually.

have found that Prep Sol (brand name) or any type of cleaners available at
auto paint supply stores works very well. Generally used to clean surfaces

Gents,
Thanks for all your replies. For those looking
to go the traditional aviation style foam route, for
fire resistant reasons or whatever, Jeff Small
e-mailed me a very nice series of pictures of his
installation. (almost like an installation manual) I
can forward it to anyone interested, or maybe contact
Jeff directly. -Might be a good piece of info for the
601 website if Mark is listening in.
Respectfully,
Brandon Tucker
