To fly inside the "mode C veil" but outside the class B airspace, a
transponder with altitude reporting capability is required but you don't
need to be in radio contact with anyone. To enter the Class B airspace, the
transponder is also required and you must get clearance from air traffic
control.
You also need a mode C transponder to enter class C airspace and you need to
establish radio contact with ATC prior to entering (you don't need a
clearance, just establish radio contact). The nearest airport to Port Huron
is St. Clair County (PHN). It's in class E airspace, no transponder or radio
required.

I do NOT have current information, as it has been 12 years since I
last flew into Canada.
Back then, I had MUCH better luck with the folks at Port Huron
rather than at Sandusky. The Sandusky bunch, both customs as
well as immigration, always wanted to charge me overtime. Also
I was supposed to set an ETA and keep it PERFECTLY.
At Port Huron, there are ALWAYS people available as they come
over from the international bridge, as needed. Port Huron used to
have inexpensive 100LL.
As to the transponder, it used to be possible to contact the top person
at a radar facility and get a waiver for a flight without a transponder.
The last time I did this was back in 1994.
Good luck,
Joe

'Mornin', All,
The seat foam issue has been on my mind for over a
year, not that I'm ready for it, but it has been
thought about. I found two places with memory foam at
reasonable prices. I've also been looking for the different
densities. I asked one company to design seat foam for my
Bird, an XL, and the price quoted was shocking!!
If memory serves me, it was around $320.00 just for the foam
for the two seats. NOT upholstery, JUST foam!!
Well, this caused me to research this issue. I found two
places that sell the stuff at reasonable prices. The
one has the different densities.
When I inquired about the expensive seat foams,
ready cut and all of that, there were three layers.
In the seat, they use hardest on the bottom, medium in the
middle, and softest on top. In the back, there were
only two layers, medium and soft. This is how they set up
seats for truck drivers, race car drivers, wheelchair patients,
etc. We can do the same by buying the different density sheets and cutting
and fitting our own, at a much lower cost.
Go in with a buddy or two and share the costs and your seats
are very wallet friendly.
Here are the sites:
www.foam4u.com and
www.viscofoam.net
These sheets are for beds and come in different
sizes, so if two or three ( or more ) are sharing costs,
you can sketch the sizes and properly plan on which sizes of
foam to buy.
Good Luck and God Bless!!

Hi 601 drivers-- I am now into 23rd hour of phase I and have noticed
from the first flights that the baggage doors are trying to flex at
higher speeds. I already have 5 Dzus fasteners along the edges and
three rows of "L" stiffeners riveted to the bottom side of the lid. I
don't know whether to add more "L" stiffeners closer to the edges of the
lid or scrap the whole lid and go to a thicker piece of metal for the
lid. Anyone else had the problem and found a solution?

I'm about to start working on the seat pan for my 701.
I have been
debating whether
or not to install the electric flaps actuator from
skyshops. This would
let
me lower the seat pan and have more headroom and
legroom, at least
according
to Skyshops advertisement for the electric flaps.
There would be
infinite amount
of flap positions as opposed to only 15 degrees on the
plans. The cost
is
$589.00. Anybody give me their opinions to help me
decide to go with
the electric
flaps or not?

I plan on going to Sun-N-Fun Friday the 15th and most of the day on the
16th, I hope to see other builders as well. I have the rudder, stabilizer,
elevator, flaps, ailerons, electric trim, right wing and very soon I will
finish the left wing so I am anxious to make my engine and instrument
choices. I understand Sportsplanes will be at ZAC's also, I want to find out
more about when they will be in a position to offer training in a 601XL.
Kevin Bonds and I plan on visiting William Wynne's Corvair facility next
week so I may have my mind made up on engine choice before I get to
Sun-N-Fun.

I have the facet pump 40109 that is supposed

I would like to add another check valve to
each side in order to make sure there is no
return flow. When I blow backwards through
the pumps I can detect a very small amount of
air passing through.
My question is are swagloc valves any good.
I have 2 that have a cracking pressure of
1psi. My pump puts out 4.5 - 9psi. Not sure
why they have such a range on the specs.
I would really like to use 1 valve after
the gascolator instead of 1 valve for each
tank. I dont think it would be passed in
Canada like that.
My 2 fuel pumps are in the wings and no other

Yes Swageloks are very good...thats what I have. To be honest though, if
your 409's backflow fuel I would simply return them for ones that work.
I would be pretty miffed to add a $50 check valve when I had already
bought that feature. You may detect a flow with air but once the seats
are wet I think you will find they seal just fine.
If you really want the check valve then swap your pumps for 106's which
make about 6psi...The 105's do not flow enough for a 100HP engine.
Remember you will deduct the cracking pressure from the fuel
pressure...i.e a 1psi spring will result in a 1psi loss at the carb...I
think the 409's will make nearer 6psi like the 106's do as I believe
thaey are the same pump internally...Don't quote me on that.
Incidently my swagelocks have 1/3rd psi springs in them, but I think 1
psi would be fine.
You would have to ask your Canadian authorities but I have a single
on-off valve after the gascolator...two valves is just more confusion.
Remember your really need a 2 battery electrical install with this fuel
pump system.

Subject: | Re: RE: RE: Seat Foam |

I can't help but jump in on the seat foam discussion as I was there
about a year ago. I bought foams thru Ebay, a local upholsterer, and
scraps at Sun and Fun. I got quotes from the upholsterer, cut foam,
wasted foam, and had extra foam.
On an unrelated trip to Aircraft Spruce and Specialty, which is only
about 30 miles from Atlanta, I saw some nice padded seat cushions (
hinged bottom and back) for about $55 bucks. They look a bit like they
were used for "booster" seats to put in Cessnas or Pipers. There is a
variety of lengths , colors and thicknesses. They are FAA approved
material for fire rating and back and bottom cushion zip open completely
at the ends so you can play with foam density and height. They even have
a neat logo with an airplane on it! I bought two of them and took the
2 inch, single density foam pad out of the back and bottom and replaced
them with the now-familiar one inch thick pink and blue memory foam
pads. You can even add a bit of extra padding to the lumbar area of the
seat back.
I can reach in, pull the whole cushion out and add a 1# pad to boost
the cushion up for a short pilot, or just let the seat rest on the seat
pan. I have no additional foam or padding on the seats with this setup
and only cut a couple of small blocks of "regular" cheap open cell foam
to cover the odd triangular area near the outside seatbelt attachment.
The seats are simple, cheap, and light. My plane came out at 605# with
vacuum panel. The foam pads that fit the seat cushions are the size you
get for $19 to $22 from Wickes and others. I think that's about 18X20
inches. I stuffed the bottom with two densities of foam-- Blue on
the bottom and Green on top and it's more than enough padding for my
180# butt and 2 hour flights.
I wish I had seen the cushions earlier as I estimate that I spent
nearly $400 for materials and was about to go to an upholsterer and pay
another $200 per seat for installation.
Another suggestion I have is to do some experimentation before you
permanently rivet your seat panel across the "v" of the seat bottom.
I am 6 feet tall and followed the diagram of the seat pan curving
almost on the floor of the plane until I realized that I would have to
add about 3" extra foam to get me up to a height that I could see over
the instrument panel. Rather than do that I stretched the seat pan
almost as tight as I could get it across the "v" seat bottom. It
prevented my having a large piece of strangely shaped foam from being
necessary and saved money and weight. It's also comfortable enough for
my 6'2" test pilot friend to fly by just removing my ACS seat and
sitting on the pan. If you are6"3" or so you are on your own so put the
pan wherever you need it.
Just a few observations that might help make your life simpler. I
can always go with more custom interior, but you can't go the other way
if you have lots of space to fill up.
I don't have the link to ACS for the cushions but somebody saved it in
an earlier post on the subject.

Alan,
Tempur foam is a nice option, it adds comfort for longer flights. The
only problem is the 701 and 601 seats are not thick enough to use all
three layers (different densities) of Tempur foam so we usually only use
one medium density layer. This seems to be the best compromise for the
thickness of the seat bottom. Although we don't sell foam kits we think
our prices for finished seat kits are quite reasonable considering we
supply side panel fabric cut out to shape with sown-in map pockets (and
for 601XL also center console cover and stick boot and optional covered
glove box on the center console).
Also remember if the seats are constructed properly the foam needs to be
cut out in the curvature of the seat. This process can be done with jigs
and hot wire or at the foam cutters, this yields very professional
looking contoured seat cushions. We also have some very nice fabrics
that we can special order, we just need 2 months + lead time. See
fabric choices here: http://www.skyshops.org/fabric.htm

Larry,
Our electric flap installation allows you to lower the seat pan by
almost 2". The entire flap deployment handle which runs under the seat
is eliminated. I think you will find our flap kit thoughtfully
manufactured with RC Allen flap position indicator and welded steel
components for attachment. The electric actuator is a very high quality
product. Click for details: http://www.skyshops.org/701%20SUPER%20FLAPS.htm
Let me know if you have any other questions.

>I'm about to start working on the seat pan for my 701. I have been debating whether
or not to install the electric flaps actuator from skyshops. This would
let me lower the seat pan and have more headroom and legroom, at least according
to Skyshops advertisement for the electric flaps. There would be infinite amount
of flap positions as opposed to only 15 degrees on the plans. The cost is
$589.00. Anybody give me their opinions to help me decide to go with the electric
flaps or not?

Well I was waiting till March 1 to bring this issue up but since another
has asked then here it is.
For all those going to Sun and Fun www.ch601.org <http://www.ch601.org/>
/ www.ch701.com <http://www.ch701.com/> wish to Welcome you all to the
FIRST hopefully annual Zenith Builders/flyers/wannabees BBQ!!
Jon, David and I will be flipping dogs and burgers for all who are
dropping by the campground to visit; we have even invited the Zenith
staff and Chris also. We'll cover the costs of the meat, buns and
condiments but would like to ask for potluck donations on the salad and
Dessert table. Bring a Chair and a bowl of salad or dessert to our
campsite, plant it and spend time with like minded people.
I will be posting a sign-up sheet on both the www.ch601.org
<http://www.ch601.org/> / www.ch701.com <http://www.ch701.com/>
websites on Sunday so that we can be sure not to run out of food and we
will also need to schedule an evening in which to do this. I will have a
sign made up and at the Zenith tent with Directions to our campsite. We
plan to arrive at Sun & Fun on Sunday afternoon April 10th, for those
who are there before us I drink my coffee black and David takes cream,
I'm not sure about Jon(someone had offered to bring us one when we
arrived).
For those of you who do not know us, were builders also. This is in no
way a commercial venture, were just friendly folks!!!!
More to come as the time approaches.

Oops, I forgot about this message.
FI pumps are coming from "real world solutions". They are a Mazda rotary
conversion outfit that has a line on FI pumps for $100 each.
I have a simple panel monted on-off switch for each pump that is fed
from a separate battery. The two batteries are isolated by a big fat
diode. That way if one battery (or the alternator) shorts it won't drain
the other battery.

Hi Frank. What are you using for FI pumps? Also interested in your
tank switching setup.
Thanks

Subject: | 801 Rudder light |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Rmtnview@aol.com
I've got all the parts drilled, deburred, assembled, and clecoed for the
rudder skeleton. And then disassembled and readied for cleaning and zinc
chromating. Then I'm ready to final assembly and cover with skins. I haven't ordered
the light kit from ZAC yet. I'm looking at the online assembly drawing
8RU-03.
Question: Is the dimension shown for the light cutout good for a safe cut?
135 + 50 X 70 ? Or should I just order the light kit, wait for it to get here,
trace around the fiberglass housing, deduct 20 mm and THEN cut?
I need to run the wire before I close it up. Is there a problem with 16 GA
automotive wire or do I need to use AN931-4-7 wire? Or is the wire included
with the light kit? I plan to run the wire from the light hole(plus several
inches), through the ribs using grommets and out through the middle of the
bottom fairing as shown on the drawing. And then about 2 or 3 feet beyond that
for
the time being. I can imagine some type of connecter there so the rudder
could be removed and the wires disconnected at a later date. Leaving enough wire
coiled up there to reach all the way up front doesn't seem practical.
From the ZAC web site, it appears the same light kit is sold for all Zenith
aircraft, so experience ANY of you have should be applicable.
Thanks for your input, information, ideas, suggestions, and advice.

Rog: just build your rudder. The notch can be cut when the light kit comes. I was
also able to run the wires without any problem after I cut the notch. Jack
