Subject: | fuel lines in 701 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Johann G." <johann@gi.is>
Hello list members.
I am about to connect the fuel lines from my wing tanks to the D tank under the
dash.
This tank has three inlets on the side, one on top side and two on the bottom.
Then there is the outlet under the centre.
My question is, if I use no fuel pump from the wing tanks and hook the fuel lines
to the bottom two inlets, will the fuel flow uninterrupted with the gravity
force only? The idea was to use the top inlet as the breather line up to the
highest point in the wings.
The front tank does not have a filler cap, so all fuel must flow from the wing
tanks.
I am just curious to know if the fuel in the front tank will prevent the flow from
the wings when the inlet is submerged in fuel.
Thanks in advance,
Johann G.

I purchased this a/c finished with 11hrs in the log. The brakes were very
marginal and had difficulty holding even at idle. It has the same wheels and
brakes as you. I found by adjusting the brakes to just before dragging I could
get them to hold up to about 1900 prop rpm. Came very near a catastrophe the
first time I did some taxi tests because the brakes became non existent and
I actually broke the rudder pedal trying to get some brake. Shut off the engine
and stopped just prior to a ditch. I was between two hangers so there wasn't
much room to maneuver. I am in the process of changing the brake pedal arrangement
to try for a bit more mechanical advantage. The present set up has no
leverage at the pedal and relies on the lever at the brake for any help. The
brake actuating lever has been extended to 6 inches. My plan is to replace the
brake pedals of zac design and make new ones with a 3:1 lever at the pedal
and revert to the original lever at the brake. I also am going to look at changing
the wheels for an offset disk so I can get the brakes inside zac's supplied
forks. The present forks are much wider to accommodate the brakes. If I was
starting from scratch I would go hydraulic but this has become a challenge.
No photos in the photo section yet, have no idea how long it takes for them to
appear.

Hi Bryan, Thanks so much for the great ideas. The float switch is a
good one. I'll look into it. My backup plan is a cork and wire thru
the cap that at least flags when it's full.

At least two or three times a week I get an e-mail from fellow builders asking
about finding different parts they saw on my site.
I am going to build a web page on my site called "What'ch Looking Fur?". Every
thing will be relative to 701/801s. It will be by type of item. For instance
there will be a line or two on engine mounts. Where to find them, who builds
them, approximate cost and application.
Something like this:
Fuel sending units, www.egauges.com, Zenith and PegaStol tanks, $24
SuperTrapp Mufflers, www.summitracing, $130
Compression Springs, www.mcmasters.com, 5 for $6,
And so on.
What I am looking for is sites and suggestions.

I'm at the point of insuring my aircraft and making that first
flight in the next few weeks. My insurance company requires 2 hours of
dual in same Make and Model. Any instructors out there that can give me a
couple hours dual? I'm located in the Indianapolis area but would be
willing to drive anywhere within about a 300 mile radius. Since I'm also
an instructor, hopefully I can do the same for others once I get my time
flown off.

Frank,
Thanks for another warning. I think George Pinneo had a similar event a
year or so ago...?
FWIW, were your brake cylinders mounted on the arm of the rudder pedal or on
the floor? I modified mine when I first built them to place the bottom of
the brake cylinder on a braket mounted directly on the floor (on the
logeron), and cut off the attachment on the ruder pedal that was originally
designed to support the cylinder (of course being careful not to cut it off
too close and damage the integrity of the rudder tubing!)...
I figure this puts much of the pressure of my feet braking directly into the
longeron/floor rather than onto the joint of the rudder tubes. I also just
recently added the gussets as well.
I notice that the new Zenair models (and all Cessna's etc.) have the brake
cylinders mounted on the floor. One other advantage of this is that it
gives a more natural geometry to the way that the pedal works in conjunction
with rudder position. As the rudder pedal moves further away from your
foot, the brake pedal becomes easier to reach (i.e. helps to add braking in
the direction of a turn).
I made one other small change to the 'bar' at the top of my brake pedal that
attaches to the top plunger on the brake cylinder. I shortened this as much
as possible. This gives me more mechanical advantage with less
stroke/travel. There was never much need for 'stroke' just more pressure,
(I'm not going there! ;-) so I think this helps. I'm reasonably happy with
the amount of braking I get now. If I need more, I guess I'll be looking
into the Matco 'intensifier' thing too.
Glad you're safe and sound!

Yes I do remember you mentioning your pedal mods sometime before and
thought they were a good idea but I had already installed mine.
Right now I want to spend as little time on the 601 as is resonably
safe. There are many improvements that can be made but I'm building an
RV and my heart is just not in the ZAC...I just need something to fly in
the meantime...:)
I have ordered the intensifiers and Larry Mcfarland sent me a adrawing
of an improved gusset design that I will will weld up.
I think this will be the fastest way back into the air.
I think my "for sale" sign might be hung on the prop at Arlington this
year..

Johann,
I had problems filling the headertank by gravity in this setting, especialy
inflight, also look in the archives concerning this problem. It also depends
on
the diameter of your fuellines (1/4" is too small) and if you have the
oldfashioned fillercap on the wingtanks(negative pressure). I bought the
Andair-valve to feed directly from the wingtanks.
I got the impression that the fuellines block when they are filled with air
when you totally empty your wingtanks in your headertank which leads to a
disapointment during the next flight.

>Hello Thoby.
Thank you very much for the information. This is very good to know from
someone who has been there and done it, before I complete my installation.
I would think that a way to eliminate the air in the fuel lines is to
install the feeder fuel line from wings to the D tank, in the highest
point inlet. That way the air would not be trapped in the lines from the
wing tanks.
Also I would not need a breather line from the D tank. The fuel would just
stop flowing from the wings when the D tank is full and the fuel lines
were full. Is this a correct assumption?
Looks like I will need new filler caps with some forced air pushing the
fuel its way.
Thank you very much,
Johann G.

List,
I've got Matco wheels and brakes on my 701. Wont hold if I get the 912 above about
4,000 rpm. Called MATCO, they said teh geometry on the link from the pedal
to the master cyl should be as short as possible. Mine is about 2 inches.
He said to drill a hole closer to the master cyl in the link and braking will
be much improved.

Larry,
Many thanks. That's probably what I'll end up doing (eg, making a syringe
like you recommend and filling the cylinders from below), since I've already
paid for the MC5s!
Also thanks for the matco website.

Hey Folks,
I just got back from my vacation in Las Vegas and had a blast. The
weather was bad all week until Thursday, which was absolutely beautiful.
So much in fact, that I talked a local flight instructor at First Flight
Aviation at North Las Vegas airport into flying with me and my
girlfriend in a rented C-172. I am FAR from current or legal, and needed
a guide anyway. His name is Will, and if you ever want to go mountain
buzzing and sight-seeing in Vegas, look him up, he was great.
It had been a year since I flew last, and have only logged a few hours
in the past several years, so I told him to let me fly the plane, but
watch me like I was a pre-solo pilot, not a 15 year pilot :-) Happy to
say, it was like riding a bike, I did fine. Even the landing(s) was/were
great, err, acceptable.
Enough junk. My girl friend in the back seat took some wonderful
pictures of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, and Red Rock Canyon.
Yes, we flew the canyon which is FUN!!!!! All of my flying has been in
the east and midwest USA, so I have NEVER seen scenery like this before.
It was absolutely the best flight of my life. You guys that fly out
there all the time are dang lucky! Unless you have an engine failure,
then my prayers are with ya brothers, not many inviting places to put
down. Even the controllers at Nellis AFB and Las Vegas were great, with
the exception of a 2 minute north vector let me do whatever I wanted.
The controllers allowed me to make one turn around Hoover Dam. They said
one turn you are considered a tourist, two turns you are considered a

guys ever navigate before that was built? :-)

Subject: | Flaperon control stop-801 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "John Swartout" <jgswartout@earthlink.net>
Have any of you -801 builders installed the Rear Torque Tube Stop, P/N
8C9-5? There are no instructions for this part, and I would be
interested in a description of the installation by someone who has done
it. Seems like the placement would be nearly impossible to get right,
because a half-millimeter error in placement would magnify into a
several-degree error in flaperon deflection. I have had the wings and
flaperons on, with a trial fit of the control system for the flaperons,
but postponed positioning the 8C9-5 until the airframe is completely
riveted and bolted together.
(I am building/fitting/assembling large sections according to the
instructions, then disassembling and priming all parts before riveting
together-so essentially building the airplane twice. I wouldn't
recommend this to anyone. But since I'm doing it, some things really
can't be done until actual completion of a section.)
Thanks to all who help.
John
