Are you an EAA member? If not you should be. The organization has some very
valuable resources available to the membership. Find a local chapter and
participate in their technical counselor program. You can invite a tech
counselor out to look over your work in progess and get some tips and
advice. The program is free and it never hurts to have another pair of eyes
look over your work especially someone who has built his own plane before.

(if anyone cares to read the full 5 page(!) detailed description, email me
and I'll send it to you.)
'Reader's Digest' version:
I flew Art Mitchell's 601XL from Kitchener-Waterloo (CYKF) down to the Creve
Couer airport (1H0) just west of St. Louis, Mo. on Wednesday, Feb. 23rd.
I cleared customs at Sandusky, Ohio, stopped enroute at Marionville
Municipal airport, Indiana (KMZZ), and at Greensville, Illinois (KGRE) to
obtain permission from STL center to enter the mode C veil without a
transponder. I arrived at Creve Couer (1H0) just before dark. During the
last leg of the flight I had sudden mysterious rudder pedal vibrations which
turned out to be a problem with the nose wheel fairing.
Total flight time on GOXL worked out to 5H50 over a GPS distance of 570
nautical miles (655 statute miles?). Average fuel burn was 5.25 US gph,
using 24 to 25 inches M.P. and 5000 engine RPM / 2,000 propellor RPM at
2,500 ft asl, more or less. (I don't know what % of power this represents).
I was cruising at 135 mph (indicated) and getting and ground speeds varying
between 110 and 130 mph. The average ground speed for the entire trip,
according to GPS (not sure how this is calculated) was just under 100 kts
(115 mph). Fuel consumption works out to over 27 airmiles per gallon -
pretty efficient!
Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this a very successful flight.
Grant

Alodine, and then paint cans. It wasn't too bad but the Variprime is much
easier. I really like it. You mix equal parts of an etching agent and the
paint. I then shot it with a HLVP touch up gun I got off of Ebay. It
really turned out nice.

My 2 cents, in building my CH601HD. I don't like snips, and almost never
used them. I built mostly from kits. For cutting 99% of 0.025 and 0.016"
Al, I used an ordinary 10 or 12" hack-saw blade fitted with a wooden
handle (home made); fast, clean, accurate, cheap, easy! To come up to the
line, I used a body file mounted on a piece of 1 x 2" wood (about 10 x
1.5", the kind with the half-moon cutters right across the width; two were
used for the whole aircraft); fast, clean, accurate, cheap, easy!

Ok so there I was about to pull my brake pedals out to go weld 'em back
up...Realised of course thet I had to remove the rad first...Of course
didn't have the right tools but finally got it off..removed padals then
noticed the distinct but tiny drip of coolant on the front of the
rad...AAARG!...I'm sure I didn't damage it but sure enough there is a
tiny weep in the front corner....
I assume there is little point in trying to save the thing so I have two
questions
1) Is there a way to save these rads
2) What is the rad from....I thought it was a 1500 VW diesel but the
local parts place could not find it on their computer....Didn't help
that I didn't know the year either.
Thanks
Frank

All the prices in Rotax are the same, we bought our engine from ZAC (complete
firewall forward and instrument kits) and it was complete and with no problems,
I mean with this that the engine and instruments were installed and worked
as spected...
Also, buying the engine from ZAC you have the waranty and service support from
Rotax. We had a modification (AD?) of our engine, done by the local distributor
with the same service as if it was bought from him.
Just my point of view.
