ZAC folks,
As some of you know I am more of a builder than a flyer so the time has come
to sell the 701 and get into the challenges of a new project. I am selling
my 701 / 912 UL/S. It has about 80 hours on it and that number will rise as I
fly it several times a week.
Swing up doors , hard points for float option , electric pitch trim , Warp
Dr. 3 blade prop , Vernier throttle , Electric TC , Vacuum Artificial horizon,
VSI , ASI , ALT, Vert Card Compass , Whiskey Compass, Grand Rapids ESI with
fuel flow and fuel totalizer , Becker comm intercom , Becker TPX with Mode "C"
( certified ) Ameriking ELT with the portable antenna and panel remote , Garmin
196 GPS , fire extinguisher , strobes , landing lights , Smoked lexan overhead
window, wing tanks and header tank.
Please , just serious buyers , that want a good honest plane for $49,000.00

Hi Gary,
It was a very quick visit, but sorry I didn't have a chance to meet or see
your airplane/project. The new owner for Art's plane is Bill Adams - a heck
of a nice fellow. If you see him say 'hi' for me... I hope he enjoys the
aircraft. It's a fine example of a 601.
I don't know much about the LSA rules, but the prop can be run in manual
mode where you can set the prop angle and then leave it alone - if that
would satisfy the rule...
regards,
Grant

Hi Lance:
I wanted to take a closer look at where you are in the construction process, but
when I click on your small photo, it comes back with "Page not Found." I'll
take a stab at it anyway since I'm past this point (although you are catching
up to me fast!).
The upright channels you are talking about face forward and mount in front of the
rear frame channel (6-B-5-2) and upper channel (6-B-5-3) which both face backwards.
I mean by backwards that the flange points towards the back. Also in
this fun bunch of parts is the attach plate for the back of the wing (6-B-5-4).
Have we covered all of the numbers on 6-B-5 yet? I think I did the most
head-scratching at this point in the construction process mostly because it's
easy to confuse the seat back group of parts with the rear channel parts and the
assembly manual jumps back and forth between them.
To address your question, I suspect you are seeing the flange of the uprights and
mistaking them for "L" angle. The flanges on the uprights are not 90 degrees,
so it would be difficult to fit a 90 deg. "L" angle inside of them. The
fun will really kick in when you start installing your flap actuator parts behind
this rear channel assembly. There are a few "L" angles back there at the
bottom along with a flap control bearing that gets riveted into the mix. Jump
over to 6-B-19 and study the placement of parts and you will see what I mean.
The best advice I can give you at this point is to look ahead and plan your work
carefully. Many of the holes you drill will have consequences in other parts,
so make sure you plan for edge distance on any parts that will be attached
now or later (flap parts). Here is an example of many parts coming together in
the area you are working on right now:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_6_04_FlapBearing.JPG
Up until this point in the fuselage I was really moving fast. It's best to take
your time and plan your holes so that everything lines up and you don't end
up with a hole at the edge of a part that attaches later. Match-drill as much
as you can. I try to avoid drilling holes in parts until everything is clamped
or taped together to get a feel for where all the parts go. Sorry I don't
have a photo of the area you are looking for, but if you don't have this resolved
by this evening I'll take a photo of it during the commercials of "Survivor."
I just wish you were ahead of me since your web site and photos are excellent and
I enjoy studying them.

As a scratch builder with questions about assembly and modifications, I
figured the few extra pennies were more than repaid when I called ZAC with
questions. Value added by tech support was partially repaid by buying the
rivets from ZAC, the mark-up isn't much. The convenience and peace of mind
were worth it for me.

Zed Smith mentioned the other day that he turned on his computer the other
day for the first time, and found "nearly a hundred "Paris Hilton" e-mails
from places we haven't even thought of bombing yet." I too recently have
been bombarded with emails with attachments infected with viruses. The
subject line is usually one of two things: "Paris Hilton Pure" from
various places (some even claiming to come from Matronics.com), or "You
visit illegal web sites" that claims to be from the FBI.
Looking at the originating IP address in the headers, they seem to originate
from one of the private IP's with cable.casema.nl -- an ISP located in
Amsterdam. I've been trying to figure out just how or where these vermin
got my email address from. If these maggot imitators have been screen
scraping on this list, it would make sense.
So is anyone else on this list getting hammered by virus mails lately?

Glad you like the site. I think between the few of us (yourself included

List...
An internet guru (his self-appointed title) told me that getting, or not getting,
these messages depended in large measure to how your provider screened stuff.
That is to say, these spammers write some self-propagating program that ends
up snowballing and therefore looks for e-mail addresses to attach a message
to.
He said that there might be several hours between the spam starting and the provider
actually taking active steps to block it.....in that interval we, some of
us, get hit.
I'm sure THAT made sense, but bottom line was that I "reported as spam" each of
the e-mails and then clicked the "block this source" box provided by my ISP.
That nearly stopped it all in a matter of two days.
None of the messages ever actually made it to me, they were held in a "suspect
e-mail file" for me to make some disposition.
It might be noteworthy that here in my office we never got any of that stuff.....different
provider from my personal account. I do, however, access my personal
account via the office. That's where the Ms Hilton, the FBI, Matronics, and
even "Microsoft Security" showed up.
Young Miss Hilton probably deserves the attention, especially since she has no
other qualifications.
Three cheers and a free beer for firewalls. And if you work for the FBI, I got
you blocked!

clamping it in the correct position for stopping one side then filling the
other side until it stopped in the correct position. It is a difficult

Hello Bill,
Me two, but with the yahoo spam control they go to a spam inbox in my e-mail account,
this way I delete this mails without even opening them, mostly come
with an attachment of about 27 to 40 (?) size, i supose there is where the potential
virus/worm comes, is important not to open this attachments, then they
will "use" your address book for they own, this is the way they get new "coustumers".
I also check the subject of this mails before delete them, sometimes the "good"
mail from the lists get "filtered" there, so I just move this specific mails
back to "inbox", no big deal, just time consuming.
If not deleted, the spam mail is deleted automaticaly by Yahoo when they get 7days
old. but I check and delete them daily.
This spamers are automatic programs, so we have to learn to leave with them and
delete them before opening, to prevent getting the worm or virus in our computer
and give them addresses fro free..
Is part of intenet I supose.

been bombarded with emails with attachments infected with viruses. The
subject line is usually one of two things: "Paris Hilton Pure" from
various places (some even claiming to come from Matronics.com), or "You

Looking at the originating IP address in the headers, they seem to originate
from one of the private IP's with cable.casema.nl -- an ISP located in

So is anyone else on this list getting hammered by virus mails lately?

Hi Lowell,
Sounds like a nice plane. I am just a lurkier on the list and I wondered if you
would mind a few questions on the Zenith. After a lot of soul searching I have
made up my mind that the 701 is going to be my first home built. I also like
the 601 but the wife would rather have a high wing so there you have it.
Is the building the Zenith tough for the first timer? I have read from so many
how much they enjoyed building I got to think its a hoot. I found a company
in Italy that got license on the 701 and have changed the tail design a little
and offer a kit that has match hole construction. ICP is the company. The
Savannah. However great their kit is I need to buy sub kits and the Zenith sure
is affordable going with the sub kits. Hope you don't mind my ramblings
Mr. Lowell! I plan to do what ever I have to on this. I love flying, I am 54
and have been thinking about it since I was 30. At least I got started flying
ultralight a few years ago and like low and slow flying! Seems like the 701
fits that to a T. I have 70 hrs about in my older Quicksilver Mx. Most of my
hours where last year as my first year I had an accident on my motorcycle on
the way to the airport! The good Lord was looking out for me and I only have
to live with a fractured collar bone. Could have been a lot worse. Went to my
first funeral for flying buddies last month as we lost a student and the instructor
teaching flex wing at the airport. Woodbine NJ. I can't wait to get going
with the 701, something the wife and I can enjoy just seeing the sights and
being able to fold the wing and trailer behind a Winnabago someday.
Take care and best wishes for your next project.

I once bought some rivets from another source. They were dome headed. I used
them and had to remove a bunch. THEN I found out that the stem broke off
close to the top of the head. So what ? Well when you try to drill the head
off, your drill bit hits the steel stem and the bit wanders off on to the
sheet metal. Miserable to remove.

In my opinion, Zac rivets backed up by their testing is a good deal even if you
pay a little more. I have been working with their rivets for about a year now
and I have found the rivets to be very consistent. I determined early on that
I could pull A-4 rivets at 40 pounds and A-5 at 60 pounds, this was the minimum
pressure the rivets could be pulled. I use a good quality pressure gauge and
only 1 pound less on either one and it does not work, on there other hand,
I seldom encounter a rivet that requires 1 or 2 pounds more to work. When that
happens I increase pressure, pull the rivet, and readjust the pressure to minimum
again.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Cory Emberson" <bootless@earthlink.net>
Hello everyone,
I've subscribed (quietly) to this list for a little more than a year, and
would like to hear from you if you're a builder who has successfully
installed and flown an alternative engine in your plane. I'm writing a
builder's roundup for Kitplanes magazine, and am looking for an installation
that's flown for a minimum of 150 hours, and is currently flying.
For the builders that we profile, the magazine will also be able to pay you
$100 for the write-up. We would also need at least 2-3 good photos,
including a close-up of the engine and an overall shot of the aircraft.
Additional photos would be great, and all photos will be returned. If you
have digital photos, it is very important that they be high-resolution, at
least 300 dpi.
I have a list of specific areas to address if you'd like to participate, but
we can handle that off-line.
Please feel free to contact me off-line at:
cory @ lightspeededit.com (remove the spaces - my anti-spam protection)
or reply offline to my list email address.
I have a rather short deadline, so if you're able to contact me as soon as
you're able, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you so much!
best,

Boy, am I on a roll today!! (A really slow day at the office)
A gentleman asked about the 701........
Let me be so bold as to offer the following:
First of all, go to a Zenith "Rudder Workshop" and get your feet wet.
The wife might enjoy the trip (never hurts to butter up the better half).
Secondly, the entire Zenith line is well designed and has good documentation.
Drawings and photos have been updated and improved on a continuing basis.
I would venture that well in excess of 95% of the North American builders use Zenith
exclusively for airframe stuff if they are "kit builders".
The scratch-built guys are somewhat more adventuresome; they defy gravity in their
love of building. But I digress.
If you ever had the opportunity to see the "Discovery Wings" segment of a few years
ago where, as I recall, somebody in Africa built a 701 using only a hand riveter
and a
battery-powered drill with a solar re-charger, then you will readily see that nearly,
notice
that I said "nearly", anybody with access to Wall-Mart, Home Depot or Lowes and
a decent Internet
connection can put one together.
The 701 will fly with about 40 horsepower, most use the 80hp Rotax 912.
The 801 is MUCH bigger and requires a large-wallet engine.
Can't speak for the 601, but lots of other guys on this list can.
If you want "speed" look elsewhere. Cars on the interstate will outrun a 701.
Bottom line is that the Zenith workshop is the cheapest way to make your decision.
All on this list crossed that bridge at some point in our own decision-making process,
and you are the fellow that'll have to make the ultimate choice.
To be fair, there has, from time to time, been some ZAC-bashing. Personally I
don't think any of it was mean-spirited or intended to imply that there was anything
amiss with Zenith, rather, some of us, me included,
have on occasion aimed our frustrations at anything that made a good stationary
target.
That said, "Yes" I would build another 701. I just need to get this one finished
first. It is really tough going when your son (read that "assistant") takes
a different job and moves to another State, and you don't have help every weekend.
Golly, I should write a weekly newspaper column under some pen name.
Anyway, that's how you acquire a lover with the approval of your wife.

Its more than a few pennies
The mark up was approaching 200 % a couple of years ago. 3 cents per
rivet from the same supplier that Zenith uses in Canada versus 8.5+ cents
from Zenith in Mexico MO. The $600 savings on my 10,000 rivets IS A HUGE
percentage of the cost of materials for a scratch builder. At that time
one could purchase all the .025 and all the .016 alum sheets for the entire
plane for $856 (3 sheets of .025 @$80 and 14 sheets of .016 @$44=$856)
That said, with Zenith using this same source for rivets now being made in
China instead of Britain. I can't recommend buying them either until some
sort of quality control issue is resolved. Unless the Canadian supplier
will some how replace their rivets if a batch fails a Zenith approved test.
Hopefully in a month or so we will know how Mr Heintz wants us to
perform that test. I would also reason that since Zenith is a large
customer for these specific rivets, The Canadian supplier would go out of
their way to make sure the quality control, comes back in line with the
previous British made rivets.
When and if that happens scratch builders can purchase the exact same rivet
Zenith purchases in Canada from the exact same supplier and have them UPS
shipped to the US for about 1/3 the price and this includes shipping and
customs.
The Canadian supplier contact info is in the archives.
I will add this, It is almost CERTAIN, if you purchase or purchased the
rivets from ANY supplier in the USA (encluding Wicks or A&S) other than
Zenith they will NOT BE the correct rivet that Mr Heintz recommends.
Its your 60,000 pennies, and your piece of mind

Since I entered aviation, I have met some wonderful people. I have marveled
at how many people have been so eager to help me realize my dream of
flight--how many people I've met that were truly unselfish with their time
and resources, and went out of there way to help me. I've been amazed at the
comradery of people interested in similar things to help and invite others
to participate.
Well today I had the first unpleasant experience of my journey.
I heard about a gentleman near me who owns a small car lot and has several
Corvair cars and parts. As I have been unable to get anyone in the Local
CORSA chapter to reply to my enquiries for engines I stopped by his lot
looking for an engine. When I walked inside there were numerous Corvair
posters and such in his office. I guessed correctly that he was a member of
the local chapter. He told me he had plenty of engines and parts but wanted
to know what I wanted one for. I told him I wanted to rebuild one. He said
he wasn't interested in selling anything to me unless I was going to put a
car on the road. He said If I could not tell him what I was using the engine
for he wasn't going to help me. So I told him it was for an experimental
aircraft. He said "well I don't want to contribute to that" and waved me
off. I looked at him and said, " Wow I didn't realize you guys felt that way
about it" He said he was probably the only one who does, everyone else will
just take my money. I tried to tell him that like CORSA I belonged to an
organization called the EAA and that our goal is to try and promote aviation
and make it accessible to more people like myself who are not wealthy but
want to realize a dream. He didn't seem to care.
As I drove home I couldn't help but think about the parallels between the
EAA and other organizations like CORSA. Maybe others have had different
experiences with CORSA chapters but mine do not speak well for the
organization. Today's experience kind of busted a bubble for me that I can't
exactly explain. I am really bummed. Sorry for the long post, I just really
need to talk to some folks that understand. You know?

Kevin welcome to the area of aviation that many have experienced. IF
you're talking to a non aviation person never mention planes. Especially
in the U.S., it actually has nothing to do with seeing there parts
passing them overhead but it has everything to do with a widow of an
unfortunate pilot accompanied by a lawyer walking through the door!! A
part intended for a car can still be liable in a plane crash! SO I can't
blame them for not selling to us the hassle is just not worth it. So
what I do is tell these suppliers I'm building a dune buggy or swamp
boat. IT will make them far far friendlier to you. While were on this

Since I entered aviation, I have met some wonderful people. I have
marveled
at how many people have been so eager to help me realize my dream of
flight--how many people I've met that were truly unselfish with their
time
and resources, and went out of there way to help me. I've been amazed at
the
comradery of people interested in similar things to help and invite
others
to participate.
Well today I had the first unpleasant experience of my journey.
I heard about a gentleman near me who owns a small car lot and has
several
Corvair cars and parts. As I have been unable to get anyone in the Local
CORSA chapter to reply to my enquiries for engines I stopped by his lot
looking for an engine. When I walked inside there were numerous Corvair
posters and such in his office. I guessed correctly that he was a member
of
the local chapter. He told me he had plenty of engines and parts but
wanted
to know what I wanted one for. I told him I wanted to rebuild one. He
said
he wasn't interested in selling anything to me unless I was going to put
a
car on the road. He said If I could not tell him what I was using the
engine
for he wasn't going to help me. So I told him it was for an experimental
aircraft. He said "well I don't want to contribute to that" and waved me
off. I looked at him and said, " Wow I didn't realize you guys felt that
way
about it" He said he was probably the only one who does, everyone else
will
just take my money. I tried to tell him that like CORSA I belonged to an
organization called the EAA and that our goal is to try and promote
aviation
and make it accessible to more people like myself who are not wealthy
but
want to realize a dream. He didn't seem to care.
As I drove home I couldn't help but think about the parallels between
the
EAA and other organizations like CORSA. Maybe others have had different
experiences with CORSA chapters but mine do not speak well for the
organization. Today's experience kind of busted a bubble for me that I
can't
exactly explain. I am really bummed. Sorry for the long post, I just
really
need to talk to some folks that understand. You know?

I don't have any pictures, I will take some tomorrow and send you some. I
had plenty when I
built it, but my hard drive blew it's cork and they were some of the ones I
couldn't get back.
I will tell you that it works very well. The actuator was about $185, the
travel sensor was $30 and I am using buttons on my control stick. I just
added a page on my site that has the addresses and part numbers for the
actuator and sensor. Check out, www.angelfire.com/un/ch701/what.html. Take
care, Larry

Kevin, don't get too excided. There are a lot of uninformed/misinformed or
just stubborn people in this world. They live in a very small world.
There is a guy about three miles from me that has a very nice grass strip,
but he ain't gonna allow no damn experimental on his strip, his words not
mine. I know him quite well, he will grudgingly let me use his field. I'm
sure I can change his mind if he will ever get in my 701. He thinks Champs
are the best thing since the Beetles. He is in for an awakening.

Nope, I didn't get any and here is why. I use lavasoft's adwatch, I use AVG
virus protection and I use mailwasher. All three do different types of
screening and all three have free versions. All three offer better versions
for small fees, I bought lavasoft and mailwasher, I use the free Avg.
Lavasoft does spyware and adware, AVG (grisoft.com), checks incoming and
out going mail for viruses and mailwasher lets you control your incoming
e-mail at the server level. Works for me, but you must keep them updated.
I do updates on a night time automatic update schedule. Sometimes, very
rarely I do get a spam, but I catch it with mailwasher and blacklist it and
never see one from them again. Just passing it on for those who are
interested. Larry N1345L

I know of a Kitfox with a 100 hp contenental for $28K.

Same happens to me with the Yahoo spam filter, a good thing we have is a temporay
junk folder for all the spam,
If the spam is stoped completly and automatic, sometimes a "good" mail could be
sent there and will be deleted without user noticing, About 1 of every 10
spam mails I recieve in that folder are list mails snt there by error, so just
move them to the inbox and delete the unwanted ones.

Although many like paying more for "better quality rivets", I have
bought probably over 4000 directly from my local distributor( I stop
there at lunch). These are exactly the same rivets the Zenair sells. As
a scratch builder finding the best deal for everything I buy is part of
the building process not something to be disregarded as to trivial for
my time.
First there was that story about only using the good rivets from the
plant in England, then it turns out that plant has been closed and they
all come form China. My position on this is that if this size/brand of
rivets is so unreliable that every lot has to be tested, then we should
not be using them! Also is the testing done on each manufacturing lot?
Do they know the date location codes of the rivets being tested. The
point is if you buy a bag of rivets they may or may not have been made
at the same time or place. Pulling out a couple of rivets to test does
not guarantee that the whole lot is good.

and I have found the rivets to be very consistent.
When that
happens I increase pressure, pull the rivet, and readjust the pressure to minimum
again.

Cliff;
I have been lurking on the Kitfox list for about two years and on the Zenith
for about six months. The Kitfox people are a fine bunch and their aircraft
is also very good. Their problem is that Skystar is in serious financial
trouble. The Zac people are a much happier lot. The company is great and
chances are the support will be there for a long, long time. I have made up
my mind to get a 601 XL in the next year. It has been too hard for me to
save the money for an airplane to gamble it on one from an unstable company.
Good luck.

I think the Zenith approach to screening batches of rivets is a little
worrying. In a manufacturing situation you may use this approach to
identify manufacturing process problems which would be subsequently fixed.
Probably finding inconsistencies in the metals being used for the rivets,
problems with the dies or equipment used to make them. Over time the quality
improves as you change the manufacturing and inspection processes to close
these holes.
Now if the Zenith testing doesn't get fed back to improving how the factory
manufactures the rivets it will continue to be an ongoing gamble for us
irrespective of whether samples from the batch have been tested by Zenith.
Even the notion of there being good batches and bad batches of rivet is a
little scary. It is a very convenient solution to the problem but being a
sceptic I doubt whether sufficient testing has been done to prove this
beyond doubt.
I could buy the argument that the rivets manufactured in the UK were of a
different quality to the ones manufactured in another country, with the
testing over time reinforcing this. But it is nonesense to think that you
can use sample testing to pick good batches of rivets coming from a single
manufacturer without traceability of individual parts through the whole
manufacturing process.
Having had that rant, I wonder whether the cherry N or Q rivets can be used
instead?
