When I went to climb into my 601 HDS this past Friday for a flight, the pilot side
step snapped off and fell to the ground.
Thinking back to the previous flight which was one week earlier, I had hear a slight
creaking sound as I got in but I did not think much of it at the time. Probably
was the step starting to fail.
In any case, has anyone else had a step fail ?
Mine failed at the weld between the vertical part of the step and the horizontal
tube just behind the plate that rivets to the fuselage side. The weld itself
did not fail rather a piece of the horizontal tube tore out adjacent to the weld
point.
After I remove the step assembly for repair , I will have some small gussets added
to strengthen it a bit.
I'll add some photos of the failed step to my web site when I get a chance.

I don't know much about Rotaxes but on the Subaru we had a lot of trouble
with the oil senders going bad. The fix was simple. Use a 12" grease whip
and move the sender to the firewall or some other "off engine" mount. The
oil senders don't like a lot of vibration. Taking it off the engine cuts it

What you describe suggests the weld was a good one, but the Zenith
aircraft are light construction, almost to a fault.
Have been waiting for the step to break off my aircraft or someone's
since building it. I use a two-step plastic
stool when it's in the hangar. Might be good to revisit both steps with
gussets before they have a chance to break.

I had one step break, but it was because my father-in-law used it to push the plane
up the ramp onto the trailer when I moved the plane to the airport. I never
liked the steps, but I couldn't come-up with anything better, so I put them
on. Some day I'm going to get rid of the other one because I don't use it anyway
(I have long legs). For passengers, I have a little stool that works better
the step.

Gary,
If you install the devices to monitor the electrical system that you indicated
you will have more than enough power to fly on just the batteries alone for over
an hour. I used to run one of the Exide 25 ah batteries in my race car (with
no charging system) that used two electric fuel pumps and three of the 1960's
type automotive coils, one per cylinder and all my electric gages for water
oil etc in addition to two brake lights using 15 watt bulbs (4 total) and run
two 30 minute practice/qualifying sessons plus 30 minutes of racing on a single
charge and never had a problem. In the event you had a alternator failure
you should have plenty of time to find an airport. So you may want to look at
using only one battery.

Well, I figured it out. I didn't purge the oil lines for air, shame on me.
With some help today I disconnected the return line, pressurized the tank
and turned the engine over manuualy until I got pressure in the system.
After a good engine run I can confirm I have steady pressure within the
specified limits.
Having fixed the pressure thing I let her warm up real good and pushed the
throttle progressively to wide open. Top revs are sitting @ 4600 RPM, so
I'm a bit coarse on the pitch. I'll drop it down to 13 degress, that
should bring the RPMs up closer to about 5200-5300 static.
Next on my list is fitting the wings, if I have the time I'll do that this
week or on the weekend.

IMHO, you might go for 5000 rpm static. Normal cruise is 5300 rpm. You
would get great climb, but very slow cruise at 5300 static.

out it will drag your main battery down real quick and the engine won't run.
If you have a second battery on a battery isolator the short will not effect

I had the battery fail on a Subaru brat once, the battery was completely
dead and would not take any charge. I got a jump start and drove it home on
the alternator alone. It worked fine as long as you didn't let the engine
drop below about 1500 RPM (I rolled through a few stop signs on the way
home). So I know that the alternator will run the engine, at least under
some situations. If the alternator shorts out, it shouldn't draw the battery
down, it should blow the fuse (or fusible link) in the charging circuit.
(You do have some sort of over current protection in that circuit don't
you?)
I'm not saying that having two batteries isn't a good idea, but you probably
dont need two full size batteries. As soon as you experience a major
electrical failure the first thing to do is to shed all unnecessary loads
and get down to the bare essentials. Then look for the nearest landing site.
I'm thinking about using a bundle 8 of "D" cells as a backup battery for the
ignition circuit. Hooked into the system through a power diode it could take
over automatically if the main electrical system failed.

Dear Experts,
To return to building airplanes: I have read many comments about the heavy
rudder controls, relative to aileron and elevator pressures. Having finally
hooked things up enough experience this (only on the ground), I began to wonder
whether nose wheel steering is really necessary, or whether differential
braking might do the job. Disconnecting the nose wheel, of course, made the rudder
a pleasure to operate.
I have most of my flying experience in Lake Amphibs, with a free castoring
nosewheel and differential brakes for steering. Once used to the idea it never
presented a problem (except one time I did not adaquately preflight and found
that no brakes also meant no steering).
I wonder if anyone has tried this with a 701? And if so, with what
kind of results?

On the other hand, He does have the right to speak his mind and we don't
have the right to kick him off any list. You don't have to agree with him or
even read his posts. Just add his e-mail address to your "do not display"

Well, the Hobbs ticked over 40 hours today, My phase I testing is complete
and I can finally get out of that 25 mile circle and carry passengers. Now I
just have to find a place closer to home to park it. First I'll have to get
out the polisher and finish the exterior and fix a few small items like
moving the comm. 2 antenna to the other side of the belly so it doesn't keep
getting coated with soot from the exhaust pipe.

If your battery is dead, and the engine is running you should be able drive
as long as you like. the battery does not have to be connect to for the
engine to run. One of the ease's ways to find a bad alternator on a car is
to start the engine and disconnect the battery, then watch the load be put
out thru the electrical system.

You could get turn down tips for the exhaust to see if that would help.
Just a thought on my part, I know the work auto's and motorcycles.
