Mornin' Fellow Builders!!
One quick question for those of you with venturi
installation experience. How big should the backing plate be for a 3" X 11" venturi?
This will be mounted where the spar and a rib intersect. The base is 2" square
with a 1 1/2" bolt pattern. I already have a .060 piece of aluminum 2" X 4"
cut for a backing plate. Will this be sufficient to back this thing and ensure
the stress will not be so much as to cause fatigue and possible cracks down
the road?
Thanks, Regards,

If you look at the over speed spec on a Lycoming there is a mandatory tear
down when operated over certain speeds for more than a limited amount of
time. In other words the TBO is drastically shortened according to the motor
Manufacturer when operated over the design speed.
Sure it is experimental.
Sure you can run it at any speed you wish.
But calling a motor experimental doesn't change its design parameters nor
the basic rules of physics.
My suggestion should actually lower cruising rpm and noise while increasing
speed.

A spar/ rib intersection is a very stout area in itself. Your 2"x4" backing plate
is probably more then good enough. If ya have concerns on how much force is
generated by the venturi just mount it on some scrap piece of metal, drive down
the road in your car and hold it out the window, that will answer your questions
real quick..

This is great information - just what I look for to solve this kind of
problem. I've been watching all the brake discussion and have incorporated
several of the ideas in my install, since I am at that point in my fuse
construction, but this clearly defines the required performance for a
functioning system.
I couldn't get the link below to work, but found it here:

This TRUE but only when "using auto fuel with ETBE or MTBE additives will
affect the reading of the fuel gauge, compared to aviation gasoline or auto
fuel without ETBE, MTBE, or ethanol. " - Cessna
The STCs that are sold do not permit using alcohol, MTBE, or ETBE. You
should not use those in your experimental either.
Reading are the same if your are using car gas or avgas when you do not use
oxygenated fuels
Even float gage systems not immune. According to Cessna research: "Higher
ETBE densities yield fuel level indications 3 percent higher than those
experienced with 100LL Avgas on float type gage systems. "

Hello Fellow Listers:
One quick, possibly dumb question - what's the secret to drilling the
stainless steel pin in the piano hinge for the elevator and elevator trim tab?
This stuff is TOUGH !!
I've tried fast speeds, slow speeds, dry, lubricant, it's still tough & slow
!
Any suggestions? I always thought stainless was fast speeds slow feeds -
yes ??
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Bill,
You're right of course, there's just too much to be made of the process
of filling rivets
as a prepaint process. Some will do it, but after looking at a good
number of Zeniths
painted, and the processes used, I've decided, as the majority of you
have, to skip that
part as well. It seems that properly painted, the rivets get filled
protection and cover
that in the end can be inconsequential to a good looking aircraft.
Do appreciate the input from everyone on this questionable issue.

First, I readily agree the Lycoming and Continental engines are very reliable,
however, I owned a Grumman Tiger with a partner in the early eighties that we
leased back to an FBO at Allegheny Airport. A student with an instructor had an
engine out and made a forced landing in a Illinois wheatfield. The engine was
sent to Lycoming which eventually accepted responsibility and reimbursed us.
The same FBO had another leaseback make a forced landing in the Pittsburgh area.
A few years ago I lost two friends, Don and Edith Mercer of Hendersonville
Tennessee, when the crankshaft snapped in their 210 and they crashed in Indiana.
I am simply pointing out the inherent risk involved in our sport that can
only be minimized, not eliminated, regardless of our engine choice.

Tracy,
Actually, you don't drill the pin. You drill the barrell of the hinge and
insert the safety wire or cotter pin to captuer the hinge pin. This means
the pin needs to be just slightly shorter than the overall length of the
hinge. A less elegant (and more permanent) solution is suggested in the
older Zenith plans.... "Smush" the end of the hinge so the pin can't come
out!

A couple of ways to safety the pin. Bending 90 as the previous writer
said. You can then make a safety wire loop around something or to a flange
on bulkhead out pf the way.
Another was is Cessna's. Make the pin a little short drill the end knuckle
of the hinge for safety wire or a cotter key. You can always crush the end
knuckle to retain a shorter pin from escaping.
Rivet an L-shaped piece of aluminum that blocks the end of the pin.
You can bend it so the end will go in to a hole. The requires a little
longer pin.
But I have never seen anyone drill it.

I
make sure that when I attach the other end and adjust the turnbuckle that I
stay in the required range (i.e. between 3 threads out and 4 in on the turn

Question - is anyone familiar with any Zenith 701 downloads for F/S 2004? And
if so, how realistic are the flight characteristics? It would be fun to "fly"
a bit while building. Also, do you have any recommendations on the best yoke

fine. However she is really loud and surges from time to time. I guess
she at least needs brushes and bushes...anyone know where I can get this
sentimental little beacon rebuilt?

Anyone have any helpful hints on making the control cables? I have made one
end of each of the rudder and elevator cables attached to shackles which are
attached to their respective mountings. The other ends have been run
through the fairleads to their respective control horns. My question is how do
I
make sure that when I attach the other end and adjust the turnbuckle that I
stay in the required range (i.e. between 3 threads out and 4 in on the turn
buckle?)

This is a question that has always perplexed me too, in that it would be nice to
retain the hinge pin, but still be able to remove it later if needed. None of
the methods mentioned so far seems to accomplish that, except for the idea of
riveting an L angle to block it....although I'm not sure how that would be possible
without interfering with the movable surface.

Mike,
One of the posts did explain a method allowing
for hinge pin removal, but it was not obvious. On the
Varga Kachinas I fly on weekends (see link below) the
aileron hinge pins are bent 90 deg on one end, and
safety wired in position through two small holes in
the aileron skin. To remove, just cut the safety
wire, and pull the pin out. Preflight includes
checking the safety wire. Not the most elegant
solution, in my opinion, but it works.

Subject: | Fuel quantity indicators |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Brandon Tucker <btucke73@yahoo.com>
Gents,
I am going with the Stratomaster Ultra engine
monitor, which only has input for one fuel tank.
Since my system is set up to pump wing tanks to the
header tank, this will work fine; -but I would love
to have some type of digital readout of wing tank
quantities. I would like for it to look something
like the Ray Allen trim indicators. First, does
anyone know what type of input signal the trim
indicators receive? Second, does anyone know of a
simple indicator of some type that accepts 0 - 80 ohms
input? Since my entire panel will be glass, I would
like to avoid analog gages.
Thanks,
Brandon Tucker

On the Cessna 172 I'm training in they bent extra hinge wire into an eye
and put a bolt through it. Remove the bolt and you can remove the hinge
wire.

The Ray Allen indicators are simply fed a voltage between 0 and 12 VDC
(typically from their position sensors which are potentiometers).
I'm in the same situation as you (601 XL with dual tanks and a
Stratomaster). What I did was buy MGL Instruments' Fuel Flow 3 which
accepts dual senders (http://www.mglavionics.co.za/maxi.html#FF-3). Or
if you can wait - MGL has a new RDAC which accepts input from two
senders (http://www.mglavionics.co.za/Docs/RDACX.pdf) They will soon
announce a new Stratomaster with a color display (the "Enigma") which
works with the RDAC-X. They also tell me that it is likely they will
offer software upgrades for the older Stratomasters which will fully
utilize the expanded capabilities of the RDAC-X.

Hi Robert,
Just one comment: With the FS 2004, the Computer Lists and normal home chores,
you will not have time to build the plane... ;-) :-)

List . . . One of the members of our flying club brought a Flight Simulator program
to a recent meeting when he gave a talk on Glenn Curtis. Curtis made engines
for the Jenny, and the F/S program had a Jenny. The member demonstrated what
it was like to fly this aircraft. The F/S program is pretty impressive.
Question - is anyone familiar with any Zenith 701 downloads for F/S 2004? And if
so, how realistic are the flight characteristics? It would be fun to "fly" a
bit while building. Also, do you have any recommendations on the best yoke and
pedals to purchase? Thx. Robert Schoenberger 55% 701
