You don't drill the pin, you cut it about a quarter inch short on each end and
drill a hole through the aluminum hinge material then put safety wire in the holes
to trap the pin in between. Or, as some have suggested, leave the pin long
on one end and bend it over and saftey it at that end. Either method will allow
removal of tht pin later. If you cut it short, you will have to use a small
pin punch to remove it but you would rarely have to remove it.

The RAF 2000 Gyroplane use a digital indicator and bendable probe for their
fuel tank. I've used two of them and they seem to work great, I didn't keep
the gyros that long. That may be why I'm still kicking. You might check
with them, they are friendly people. I'm sure they will sell you a set up.

The Webmasters BBQ: Thursday April 14, 5:00 pm:
"www.ch601.org and www.ch701.com webmasters will be hosting a BBQ at
their campsite for builders and wannabes of Zenith Aircraft. Bring your
drinks and lawn chairs and meet many of those builders you know from
email postings. We'll supply the burgers and dogs (no-obligation
donations will be happily accepted). The BBQs will be fired up from
5:00 pm until everyone is fed on April 14th. Please RSVP using the
SUN-N-FUN BBQ FORM so that we may know how many to prepare for and to
have your name tag ready. The location will be posted at the Zenith
booth along with the pre-registered name tags. We look forward to seeing
you there!"
So Far we have a pre register of 62 people it should prove to be quite
an event. Remember we are fellow builders as well with no commercial
intent towards this event. The Folks from Zenith are also saying that
they will drop by but cannot commit to it.

Mike,
My elevator hinges are 2-1/2" short of the tips each end and the hinge
is drilled for a 1/32" cotter each end.
The captured hinge pin is removed by a spare hinge wire which is used to
push the wire out far enough to grab it
and pull the rest of the way. I think the a snug fitting hinge needs to
be lubed and spun in a scotchbrite pad for a
while to reduce it for a good fit and ease of removal. At least this is
what I ultimately did and it works.

I've been looking at the Aveo Tech instruments, in particular their FF3 fuel
gauge that monitors 3 tanks (they also have a FF2 for dual tanks). Very
inexpensive for all their capability. http://www.aveousa.com/
I have installed the aux tanks and am trying to figure out how to monitor
and manage 4 of them. Haven't figured it all out yet. I'm thinking some
combination of fuel flow metering for total fuel remaining calculations,
coupled with digital or analog tank level indicator(s) for tank selection.
I installed the std. VDO senders which seem to be compatible with almost all
the glass gauge packages.

The Ray Allen indicators are simply fed a voltage between 0 and 12 VDC
(typically from their position sensors which are potentiometers).
I'm in the same situation as you (601 XL with dual tanks and a
Stratomaster). What I did was buy MGL Instruments' Fuel Flow 3 which
accepts dual senders (http://www.mglavionics.co.za/maxi.html#FF-3). Or
if you can wait - MGL has a new RDAC which accepts input from two
senders (http://www.mglavionics.co.za/Docs/RDACX.pdf) They will soon
announce a new Stratomaster with a color display (the "Enigma") which
works with the RDAC-X. They also tell me that it is likely they will
offer software upgrades for the older Stratomasters which will fully
utilize the expanded capabilities of the RDAC-X.

The Aveo FF-3 is the same as MGL's FF-3. If you read the manual you will
see that it only monitors two senders. The difference between the FF-2
and the FF-3 is size: the FF-2 is "SmartSingle" (2.25" dia.) while the
FF-3 is a "MaxiSingle" (3.5" dia.)

Subject: | Cover strip info on an HD |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Trevor Page <webmaster@upac.ca>
Can anyone give me some tips about the cover strip on an HD?
I'm in the finishing stages now, I hung the wings yesterday and started
on the cover strip. What I'm not fully understanding is the bottom
front retention support on page 6-V-15. The assembly is listed as
"Detail A".
I see that the part shows 2 A5 rivets with a 3/16" washer as a spacer
for the bottom skin but I don't get how you are supposed to install
this as the gap between the outboard and inboard wings is too narrow
once you get the wing on. Am I supposed to bolt this assembly to 6V15-1
with the cover strip and carefully hang the wing then screw in the 2
screws at the trailing edge of the cover strip during wing
installation??
Does anyone have a better method of securing the bottom front of the
cover strip?? I don't have a single picture of the assembly in my photo
collection!
The plans on the same page also show some pressure tabs (3 of them)
used to keep the cover strip in place against the top skins because of
lift. Anyone have a neat tricks on how to do this?
Thanks in advance
Trevor Page
601HD. Cover strip is the LAST thing to do!!! Woohoo

Need a few details, Doug.....is it JUST the trim tab that is at full
extension down ? Is this an XL elevator driven by a Ray Allen servo? Is the
elevator trim tab in the center of it's travel? If not, hook up a 9 volt battery
to the servo and cycle it to center.

You don't drill the pin, you cut it about a quarter inch short on each
end and drill a hole through the aluminum hinge material then put safety
wire in the holes to trap the pin in between. Or, as some have
suggested, leave the pin long on one end and bend it over and saftey it
at that end. Either method will allow removal of tht pin later. If you
cut it short, you will have to use a small pin punch to remove it but
you would rarely have to remove it.

Subject: | New 601XL Elevator Trim Design |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Joe Kerr" <kerrjf@charter.net>
I don't recall seeing any news about the new elevator trim tab design for the 601XL
on the list, if there was, I missed it. I just received my tail kit and
the trim tab is no longer recessed but is now installed aft of the elevator trailing
edge and is full span, 955MM long. A few solid rivets are used on the
trim tab, guess I'll need to learn to use (and find) a rivet squeezer after all.
Looks like this will address the need for more trim effectiveness that has
been discussed before on this list.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Phil Maxson" <pmaxpmax@hotmail.com>
I have installed 2 55 Watt halogen driving lights as my taxi/landing lights.
They are Pilot Brand PL-1067C units, but I can't seem to find the amperage
for them. I'm doing the wiring now, and can't find the information. Does
anyone know?

voltage X current = watts. 55w + 55w = 110 w
110w/12v = 9 amps for two bulbs one bulb would be half or 4.5 amps. If the
bulbs are 55 watts for 12 volts they be a bit higher for 14 volts from an
alternator.

Ignoring "inrush" current the formula for DC is watts = amps * volts or
amps = watts / volts. So if those are 12 volt lamps they should draw
about 4.6 amps.
But filament lamps draw a lot more before the filament heats up (that's
the inrush). So you may have to wire and fuse for the initial surge.

Can someone tell me the required elevator trim size for the 601
as on the plans the size given seems too small.

I couldn't get my 601XL to trim out at all in cruise until I lowered the leading
edge of the stabilizer about half an inch. Now I can trim it out down to about
60 mph at cruise power settings. I still can't trim it out at low power settings
or anything beyond 5 degrees of flap.
If you are using full up trim at cruise speed then you probably will have to lower
the nose of the stabilizer. I'm thinking of adding a linkage to the flaps
to assist the trim tab, possibly a cable to the flap actuater with a couple of
pullys and a bungie cord to connect it to the elevator cable.

There is an electronic box that does this. See:
http://www.aircraftextras.com/FPS-Plus.htm
I did buy one (to allow me to set my flaps to 10, 20 or 40 degrees at
the push of a button) but have yet to install it. No, it isn't my site.
No, I have no financial interest in the product. No, I have never been a
member of the Communist Party.

You don't understand, My trim tab is physically incapable of dealing with flap
settings beyond about 5 degrees. The trim tab limits out and still won't trim
the airplane. No electronic box will solve this problem. I need somthing that
will literally pull harder on the elevator when the flaps are down.
