Agree with Larry here and with many other posts going back a loooong way that suggest dropping the ailerons a little bit will basically make the a/c behave as though the wing has greater positive incidence. I cannot recommend that anyone drop them half an inch - that's a drastic droop and may well make a decided change in stall speed and slow speed to stall characteristics. Try a turn and a half out (no more) on each aileron rod and go up and try in mild flying conditions. Then maybe a turn more... One last thing: I get the digest form of the posting since I rarely respond to many questions anymore. Would you fellows PLEASE leave off the original posting when you respond? Just a few lines of the original post are needed, sometimes the thread title is sufficient. When a new post is followed by numerous old ones, it makes going through the digest an exercise in how fast you can scroll and not miss anything new. Hitting delete in digest form is not an option as it would delete the whole digest. If just three or four of you regular posters would try to do this it would set a great example for the newcomers, many of whom don't seem to have read the list guidelines that come out the 2nd of each month. A week ago there was a post on the digest that went six deep - six older posts, in their entirety, attached. CAVU jeff

I tried 4 turns UP and it really did glide like the space shuttle. If your plane is already nose heavy, make that ONE turn at a time. --> Zenith-List message posted by: bryanmmartin@comcast.net I have the recessed trim tab and right now, I have the maximum nose up travel set to the point where the flange of the trim tab horn touches the channel in the elevator cut-out so there's no more motion available. I suppose I could cut away some of the channel to allow the flange to move past that point until the metal of the tab meets the metal of the channel but that would only give me another eighth inch of travel. -- Bryan Martin N61BM, CH 601 XL, Stratus Subaru. do not archive > --> Zenith-List message posted by: Grant Corriveau <grantc@ca.inter.net> > > Maybe you can re-adjust the travel range (neutral point) of the trim tab to > take away the excess nose down movemnt in exchange for more nose up?

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Hansen, Ronald" <RH122050@ncr.com> I'm working on my canopy (the older, non-XL type forward hinged with round steel arms) and though I installed the ZAC side hooks initially, I really didn't like them much and took them out. Does anyone have a nice latching mechanism that doesn't require extremely difficult to make parts? Or if they are difficult, full specs? I don't have a machine shop or welder, but could outsource that if needed. I did an extensive archive search and although I didn't find what I was looking for, I think there's an answer out there and I'd appreciate any help. Check www.ch601.org under the builder links section. There is a site that shows the latch. I know Paul Sharpe who's on this list built this type and it works well. I've seen a couple of other types the XL type is better overall but very frustrating to build. If you CAN, I would try and do the XL method. I did and it worked out very well. Difficult however. Subject: 801 engine installation problem
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Agstore" <jay@agstore.net> Today I decided to try to hang the engine on the plane. It is a used O-360A1A Lycoming. I hoisted it out of the crate and brought it to the front of the mount. I could see that it was not going to go on with the mags attached, so I removed them. Then I could see that it was not going to go with the propeller governor control attached. That is where the problem is. The control is going to run right into the Z channel on the firewall. There is no room for it. This is my first "real" plane (been flying ultralight), so I am not real familiar with the Lycoming or it's accessories and I don't really know very much about the constant speed prop. I believe this engine is out of a 1963 Comanche. Can I make this engine work in the 801 or do I need to go engine shopping again? Can someone give me a brief explanation on how the constant speed prop works? Thanks for any info. Jay

I can post you a copy off list of Eds photos and a copy of Rays drawings if you wish. I can scan drawings or post in Turbo Cad if you can read this. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Hansen, Ronald" <RH122050@ncr.com> Trevor, Thanks for the leads. I'll dig into them. I almost bought the additional items to convert to the XL style, but ZAC wanted $700US for just the incremental parts at the time and I had just spent a lot on the version in hand. I may be regretting that decision now, but here I am. The rest of the canopy is nearly done, including the tedious work with the forward fuse skin. If you got the XL latches to work with the round canopy rails, I'll have to dig that thought out again. I just figured there was no room.
