Here's the link: http://www.avweb.com/news/maint/185020-1.html Now that I understand how they work, I still have a question as to what the thing on the back of my engine is. I have uploaded a picture at the following link: http://www.agstore.net/propgovenor.jpg I assume it is what they call the prop governor and controls the oil flow to the constant speed prop. The control lever is spring loaded and returns to the stop when released. Is it manually controlled by the pilot? After reading the article above, I assumed it was somehow automated by engine rpm? Now back to my mounting problem. Here is a picture of my mount: http://www.agstore.net/enginemount.jpg As you can see, there are less than 12" to the firewall from the mount. In the picture of the prop governor above, you can also see that it comes back a full 12". That is where my problem is. Is there a shorter "prop governor" that I can swap in place? Or do I need this at all? I bought a Hartzell constant speed prop with this motor but I could trade it for a regular prop (if I can put a regular prop on a A1A??) Again, I am a novice when it comes to Lycoming engines, so please steer me in the right direction. Thanks, Jay Herron ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 06:40:52 AM PST US From: "jnbolding1" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: 801 engine installation problem continued --> Zenith-List message posted by: "jnbolding1" Didn't look at the pics but one of the things typically done is to recess the offending area with a proper size stainless bowl from Walmart. sometimes mags, oil filters, governors, hyd pumps, vac pumps etc get in the way and need a bowl to fit. Next door neighbor has one on his new Bearhawk for the oil filter. With the AFS paints, The process is 3 coats. The first coat is a very light fog coat. With this coat there is only partial coverage. It basically looks like scattered fine droplets of paint. This is allowed to tack up for about 5 to 10 minutes, then a second very light fog coat is applied in a direction 90 degress from the first. Again, after this coat there is still incomplete coverage. This coat is again allowed to tack up for about 5-10 minutes. Next, the final coat is a medium coat which provides full coverage. I think the actual final paint thickness is quite thin. The first 2 coats are allowed to tack up slightly for good adhesion, but are still wet enough to flow out well with application of the 3rd coat as if all 3 coats were applied at once. So rather than having to get just the right amount of paint sprayed in one application for a nice finish, you build up to it slowly which to me seems easier to do. As I said in my post, when you spray the final coat, it will look a little uneven just after the paint is sprayed, but in a few seconds it will flow out to a nice shine. Now, if you wait too long between coats, the paint will dry enough that you will be building up thickness rather than having all 3 coats flowing together. And yes, the stuff is not cheap! During the flight Jeff radio'd that my aircraft appeared to be flying a bit nose high (tail down) and suggested that I might try lowering the ailerons a little to see if it would help. Through a process of small changes and test hops to observe the effect, I wound up with a total change of moving both of them down 3/16". That might not sound like much but boy did it do wonders for the aircraft. It brought the nose down giving me far better forward visibility, it made take-offs in my tri-gear easier to lift off smoothly, it lowered the stall speed a bit, and it didn't slow down the top speed at all. The mags were tight but they fit. I had to remove one mag to fit the engine to the engine mount but it went right back on. I have a fixed pitch prop so the governor was not a problem. I did have a wrestling match with the fuel lines between the engine driven fuel pump and the electric fuel pump. Jim Frisby had problems with his mags on his O-320. He ended up installing a electronic mag on the one side. Bill Wilcox N801BW Still working on the bigger horizontal tail. The beach was great yesterday. Found a glass ball! 150 hrs Valdez, AK --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Agstore" Today I decided to try to hang the engine on the plane. It is a used O-360A1A Lycoming. I hoisted it out of the crate and brought it to the front of the mount. I could see that it was not going to go on with the mags attached, so I removed them. Then I could see that it was not going to go with the propeller governor control attached. That is where the problem is. The control is going to run right into the Z channel on the firewall. There is no room for it. This is my first "real" plane (been flying ultralight), so I am not real familiar with the Lycoming or it's accessories and I don't really know very much about the constant speed prop. I believe this engine is out of a 1963 Comanche. Can I make this engine work in the 801 or do I need to go engine shopping again? Can someone give me a brief explanation on how the constant speed prop works? Thanks for any info. I would call Van's and ask them to give you the dimensions of the Govenor http://www.vansaircraft.com/ It will drive the Hartznell prop. Is dificult to all of us, mainly newer members to remember every post, to delete the unwanted part of the post before hitting the "send". Saludos Gary Gower. Do not archive. Jeff Small wrote: --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff Small" One last thing: I get the digest form of the posting since I rarely respond to many questions anymore. Would you fellows PLEASE leave off the original posting when you respond? Just a few lines of the original post are needed, sometimes the thread title is sufficient. When a new post is followed by numerous old ones, it makes going through the digest an exercise in how fast you can scroll and not miss anything new. Hitting delete in digest form is not an option as it would delete the whole digest. If just three or four of you regular posters would try to do this it would set a great example for the newcomers, many of whom don't seem to have read the list guidelines that come out the 2nd of each month. A week ago there was a post on the digest that went six deep - six older posts, in their entirety, attached.
