Executive Summary ;-) version: Lenarcic's first attempt with the Zenair 701
ran into bureaucratic problems first in Russia, then in Canada. The Russian
delay put the project behind schedule. Then the Canadian delay put the rest
of the northern flying so late in the season as to make the chances of
favourable weather very iffy. And of course, onto all this add the expenses
and the fact that Matevz has a family back home in Slovenia who are doing
without him during this (overly-)long project. Consequently the first
attempt was aborted in Canda. His second attempt finally succeeded.
longer version:
His 701 was equipped with extra fuel tanks (of course)... in Russia, after
looking at other prospects like having to pay for a military Antonov 24 to
accompany him, he was forced to carry a navigator from Aeroflot. This made
his flight weights seriously 'heavy' even after he removed some of the extra
fuel capacity. The 701's short field performance paid off at one point when
he had to land in a clearing at one point when smoke from forest fires
became too dense to safely continue.
After crossing the Bering St. and 'skipping' out on the FAA inspectors who
were threatening their own delays, Lenarcic arrived in Canada. Here it
would seem, someone in Transport Canada, at a high bureaucratic level, took
a dislike to his project. He was finally allowed to continue as far as
Ottawa and the Slovenian embassy, and later on he was allowed to come a few
miles further to Ste. Lazare airstrip just outside of Montreal where he
could obtain some needed Rotax 912 maintenance.
That's where I met him. He showed me both the copy of his very early letter
from T.C. which had been written in response to his original research about
legalities for transiting Canada enroute to Greenland, Iceland, Scotland,
etc... This original letter said that his flight was not considered a
'Trans Atlantic Flight' due to this routing, so he did not need to comply
with the Cnd. Aviation Regulations that govern Trans Atlantic flights.
These regs require the aircraft to be equipped with specific life-saving
gear, as well as adequate fuel reserves etc... Lenarcic's operation met all
those restrictions.
The rules (never updated!) also required the aircraft to carry an NDB nav.
radio, (and maybe also a VOR - not sure), as well as an HF comm radio.
Lenarcic 'only' had dual GPS units VHF comms and a very sophisticated
satellite telephone that was certified to function even at high latitudes.
That is, he was meeting the intent of the regs. if not the letter.
The other factor involved pilot quals. The regs require the pilot to be IFR
rated. Mat was instrument flight trained, but did not have the licence
endorsement because the mission was a vfr-limited mission from beginning to
end.
Now, under the originall T.C. response, none of these regulations mattered
because the flight was not deemed a Trans Atlantic flight. However, after 2
years of preparations, Matevz received another communique just weeks before
departure, informing him that a 'new interpretation' had been received from
'the legal department', and NOW his flight was considered a 'crossing' and
he should comply with all these regulations.
Rather than cancel the operation, he and his team decided to launch on time
and hope for a 'diplomatic' solution enroute. As mentioned, this 'solution'
was not reached before time ran out and Lenarcic ended up taking the
airlines back home. After an attempt by a Zodiac builder in Illinois (Doug
Pahanke) to purchase the 'Blue Lightning', bureacracy (American this time)
foiled things yet again. Due to the airplane's unusual fuel configuration,
it became a nightmare of certification problems, and it became very unclear
as to how the aircraft would be ferried to the U.S. and then how if could be
certified to fly there. Eventually it was crated up here at CST3 (Ste.
Lazare) and shipped back to Slovenia for resale.
In the meantime, Matevz proceded to obtain his IFR rating, and wanting to
have he capability to overfly Canada, if need be, and just make generally
fewer stops, he had a new aircraft prepared. A Slovenian company,
Pipestral, helped provide a Sinus (Slovenian name for some sort of bird)
which was equipped to comply with the Canadian regs! He launched again!
His original plan had been to bypass Russia by flying through China, but the
SARs crisis made the Chinese authorities too 'busy' to want to be bothered
dealing with his requests for transit authority. As I understand, his
secondary routing was then via the various 'Stans' (Uzbeckistan,
Afghanistan?, etc..) through Mongolia, then into Russian airspace. Due to
poor communications betwee the Mongolians and Russians, he was intercepted
by a Mig fighter and forced to land. Again Russian bureacracy threatened
the success of the mission, but thankfully, friends he had made during the
previous attempt finally prevailed and he was allowed to continue!
This time, after crossing the Bering Strait and Alaska, Mat headed down the
west coast towards California (where I believe he has some relatives), then
he arrived at OSH for the convention. There he was a featured visitor,
hosted by the U.S. dealer for Pipestral. They took him directly to the
Transport Canada booth at the show, presented his documentation and so
Matevz was finally accorded a 'stamp of approval' for the Canadian leg of
his journey. "They approved it (because they had to), but they did not like
it."
Mat stopped in again at Ste. Lazare to say hello, but immediately pressed on
towards Iqaluit (Frobisher Bay) as the late summer weather was again
becoming a challenge. After waiting for some favourable winds, he
eventually finished up with some mega-long flight legs via Greenland, U.K.
and back to Slovenia!
Apparently Matevz will be preparing a book about the adventure. He's a
professial photographer as well as 'adventurer' - so I'm sure this will be
as impressive as his other works (see links below).

In reading his website myself, I see that I misunderstood apparently. When
I talked to him he probably told me it was the east coast of Greenland that
he decided to overfly and went to Iceland in one leg instead of two...

two occasions to start my engine but was unsuccessful. The very first few
times it would immediately fire but then die. I suspect I'm not getting
the fuel to the cylinders. I have no gas smell typical of a flooded
condition. Before the final fuel line installation, I pumped fuel out of
both tanks using the electric pumps and was getting 20 gph out of each
side. Is there something about the bing altitude compensating carb that
could contribute to some sort of air lock? Any other thoughts?

Chuck,
I was surprised the 3300 had Bings. The thing that comes to mind is the
float setting
for your main jet. If it's adjusted wrong, you might not get any fuel
through, conversely
if it's adjusted wrong the other way, it'll run fuel out the overflow.
These are not too hard to disassemble
but before you do that I'd suggest you contact Bing 1-800-309-2464.
You need to get the $8.00 "Bing Carburettors Aircraft Tuning and Parts
Manual" to get a better
feel for their operation.

Actually, Vans has been working on the RV-11 motorglider for quite some
time, as a personal project. See:

As you can see, it is a single-place, Jabiru-2200 powered design.
This is NOT the LSA design hinted at by the EAA article. It will be
likely be something entirely different, and would logically be direct
competition for the Zodiac XL, Sonex, and others. If Van's history is
any indication of the performance and success of their new LSA design,
the competition should be sweating profusely right about now...

Check this:
If Jabaru is using a Bing that is similiar to the Constant-Velocity Bing
used on BMW motorcycles, the throttle must be closed or close to closed and the
enrichining lever (choke) on full. If you open the throttle the 'choke'
WILL NOT WORK.
Make sure the 4 screws that hold the 'choke' lever onto the throttle body
are damn snug, as an air leak here will not allow the engine to start.

green, but Greenland is white.

As somebody has already mentioned, there is a "trick" to the choke/throttle mechanism
on the Bing.
"Choke" only functions when the throttle is OFF. Advancing the throttle even a
small amount defeats the choke.
I'm at office, not in hangar, but if you will look closely I think you can see
this.
See that your throttle cables do in fact completely release the throttle levers
on the carbs when you place your control in the idle position.
And, yes, a nice ground on the mag leads will hinder progress.

Chuck,
I have a Jabiru 2200, and the manual specifies that the PSI to the
carburetor should be below (I'm at the office, so this may only be accurate
within one PSI) about 3 PSI. With your combination of pumps, could you be
exceeding the 3300's capacity? (Or would this have resulted in the flooding
that did not occur?)

Yes, I do understand the urge to get home quick when you have been flying
around the world and grounded and treated badly by the Russians. No pun
intended, but they do not seem to understand that some people like to have
fun in life.
I recommend the airliner way to visit. The other method is too risky because
of the cold ocean between us. Anyone on the list who will visit will get the
private welcome treatment, and a Zenith 701 flight weather permitting.

It is not much compared to what you are used to in Mexico.
The average temperature is 55-60 on Fahrenheit.
The average temp during the winter time is around 30 F.
So the fluctuation is not high. Our only problem is the rain and wind, due
to the common low pressure areas traveling up the Atlantic ocean from the
east coast of America.
Hope this gives you some idea of our climate up here. The main reason for
the mild temp is the Gulf stream which surrounds the island.

Its around 60 to 75 degrees in the summer around Keflavik. Iceland is a
beautiful country, I spend 10 months there in the Air Force at US Naval Air
Station in Keflavik. While I was there the US Government was the largest
single employer in the country. Fishing is the number 1 industry, or it was
while I was there in 4/75 to 1/76. While there, I took several tours of the
country on weekends, there is a river in downtown Reykjavik that during the
Salmon season cost $5000.00 US for a 1/2 license to fish and there was a
limit. Two fisherman in the morning and two in the afternoon. The climate
is mild due to the Gulf Stream coming up from the Bahamas. Average winter
temperature in Keflavik was 32 degrees. Before a kid can graduate from High
School they must be able to read write and speak Icelandic, German, and
English.

The choke/strangler circuit. If the throttle is open too far the circuit
will not function because it will not see enough vacuum across the port to
draw fuel. When you try next time make sure the throttle plate is closed
and the choke circuit is fully open.

Don't know what the Jab uses for ignition but I have seen many engines
refuse to start then the builder realises he was firing on the exhaust
stroke (distributor in back wards) or the high tension leads were
connected to the wrong plugs etc. Like really brain dead and obvious
mistakes
I don't know if you getting any firing at all but you could try (and
pleease be careful) squirting half a tablespoon full of fuel directly
down the intake tubes (if you have a primer this is what this does).
Then ctrank the motor.
When (IF) the motor fires it will draw a lot of fuel and air through the
carbs.
If it doesn't fire or spits back/doesn't run at all then I would be
looking at ignition (like is it sparking at all?) or is the timing
completely out, firing on the wrong stroke etc.
Make sure your ignition has power.

The first time I started my 3300 I had to play with the throttle.
The engine would start, race and quitwhen I pulled the throttle back.
The Jabiru docs say that the idle needs adjusted. The idle is set for
bench testing before the engine is shipped. I set the idle speed higher
and got the engine running. It took several tries.
If your engine is new - out of the box - you shouldn't have to fiddle
with anything else. Although, I do agree with the observations that
the throttle needs to be closed for the choke to work.
